Mickelson’s statement is an epic combination of self-interest plus self-delusion.

The idea that you would call someone up, speak with them in an effort to influence their book and assume that you are “off the record” absolutely defies belief. Especially for someone who has been in the public eye as long as Phil.

More stunning to me - and obviously more worrying to Phil - is that he doesn’t seem to grasp that even if his comments were off-the-record, his acknowledgement that he did, in fact, say them will alienate his allies and adversaries alike. Which is how he has come to find himself as a pariah to both the PGATour and the “scary motherfuckers” who were backing him.

GJGE, jackass.

And yet, if you listen to The Firepit podcast, Shipnuck does everything he can to make Phil look like the conquering hero without outright saying it. This stuff sells books and that's Shipnuck's angle. I won't speculate on Phil;s.

"The comments I made about about Saudis executing Khashoggi were taken out of context. That had nothing to do with their money."

Interesting. That wasn't my take. I thought he presented everything fairly and from both sides.

Phil can be an idiot but this seems a stretch to me. Almost seems like Phil was getting cold feet about the Saudi league and was looking for a way to blow up the whole deal.

The problem with that idea is that Phil made these comments in November.

If carnage/tough conditions is your thing, this is your week. Par 70 so the scores are higher in relation to par and if the wind blows the winning score can be around E. Hudson Swafford won a month ago and is +8 through 6.

Also a pretty terrible field overall, being sandwiched between Riv and then Bay Hill/Players. This course stinks too, imo.

Greg Norman, OTOH, comes off as a moron who, unlike Mickelson, probably put a fuckton of his own money on the line and faces a financial bloodbath.

"
Simply put, you can't ban players from playing golf," Norman wrote. (who is banning anyone from playing golf?) "Players have the right and the freedom to play where we like. I know for a fact that many PGA players were and still are interested in playing for a new league, in addition to playing for the Tour. What is wrong with that?
"What is wrong with allowing players to make their own decisions about where to play and how often to play? What is so wrong with player choice? Why do you feel so threatened that you would resort to such a desperate, unwise, and unenforceable threat?"
He also refers to "labor laws" & "unfair labor practices." He, quite literally, has no idea what he is talking about.

Norman's involvement should cure any anxiety that the Tour has about competition. They know better than anybody that he's a lock to come up short about 95% of the time.

Andy Brickley's potty mouth
If you told my 14 year old self that in the future I'd love Nick Faldo and hate Greg Norman, I would be floored.

I was the biggest Norman fan and was crushed watching the 96 masters back 9. I can't believe how much of an ass Norman has become and how likeable Flado has become.

Same here. Except I was 30 and probably drinking and swearing at the TV as Norman's spectacular, but inconsistent, game fell victim to Faldo's comparatively grim, joyless trudge around the course.

Since then, I've realized what an asshole Norman is and it's all good. Belated congratulations, Nick.

Holy crap, I don't know what's more surprising: The fact that he barely got it halfway there, or that the putter somehow isn't in 32 pieces right now.

Didn't even get it halfway. Shotlink tracked it at 1 inch. It's kinda weird. He just didn't hit it. This has happened before but it is usually when a guy is contorted around trying to avoid other players lines and haphazardly whiffs. This one it's like he pulled the trigger then wanted to stop for some weird reason.

I can't believe there's a Shotlink for that. Incredible.

Another good week for those who like carnage. Wind blowing around Bay Hill. Cut is going to be over par on a 72.

Also we get Bones on the broadcast this week which is always a treat.

Azinger says Horschel looks to be in the best position.

Horschel then goes into the water and is staring at double-bogey

Those greens must be something else, given how many short putts are being missed
