It feels a little strange and under the radar, but it is major championship week. The defending champion, Phil Mickelson is not participating and in exile. With somewhat subdued fanfare, at least by his standards, Tiger Woods has been on site and appears to be a full go. Who would've thought that a year ago?

Scheffler enters as world number 1 and Masters champion. Rahm picked up a win in his last start. Spieth looked lost at Augusta but won at the RBC and finished 2nd at the Byron Nelson yesterday. The rehearsal he's got going is ugly but he's in form as he tries to complete the career grand slam.

I don't remember a ton about Southern Hills from the last time they played there (2007, won by Tiger).

I don't find a lot bad about his (Spieth's) rehearsal. It is similar to what Corey Pavin used to do (granted, growing up, I was a Pavin-stan... I even got a 4 wood because of the shot he hit on 18 at the 95 US Open). Essentially, you exaggerate a move (come over the top) so you can fight against being stuck inside... the idea being that the body will find a happy middle.

Current DK odds

Scheffler 12/1
Rory 12/1
Spieth 14/1
Rahm 14/1
Cam Smith 18/1
JT 18/1
Viktor 18/1
Hideki 20/1
Morikawa 20/1
Xander 20/1
Cantlay 22/1
DJ 35/1
Koepka 55/1
Tiger 65/1
Bryson 100/1

The one that jumps out to me is Brooks. I know he MC'd at the Masters and withdrew last week with an injury, but the man is indestructible at this tournament. He's +900 to top 10. Since 2015, T5, T4, T13, 1, 1, T29, T2. That might be worth a few dollars.

I was looking at the make/miss cut odds and didn't see Bryson or Tiger. Bryson's wrist is all wrapped up, I can't imagine him playing is on the advice of his medical team.

From watching Live From, Tiger seems to be moving around a lot better than he was at Augusta. No clue if he can make the cut. Wouldn't doubt him, but also probably not fair to expect it.

that T29 finish, he was two shots back going into the final round.

I was ready to post something about Tiger being closer from 201 than Rory from 86. Oops. If Rory actually figured out the wedge control, lookout.
You and me both. Anytime I see Rory with a wedge at the PGA I think of that shank of the scoreboard on the practice tee from... Bellrieve?

Are you sure? I mean, I've played the course something like 50 or 60 times, but I suppose my memory could be off...
The green and back tee are fairly close, but you definitely go over any part of the green. They have actually expanded that tee to the right to make more room up there and took down some trees to the left to open it up.

The championship course is a composite of the 9 and 18, so you're numbering could be off. I think you mean 4 and 5?

Ah...I had no idea that they'd changed the composite course routing this year. At the 1988 US Open and the 1999 Ryder Cup, they got rid of holes #9, #10 and #12 from the big course and replaced them with holes #1/#2 (combined), #8 and #9 from the Primrose nine, but it looks like they're getting rid of holes #4, #9 and #10 this time. (Which is awesome - #12 is a dynamite drop-shot par 3.) And yes, in that context I did mean #4 and #5...

...although apparently I stand corrected. That said, I'm pretty sure that *I* have hit over that green before from that tee! :)

I'm sure I have as well! I also didn't realize they took 4 out of the rotation either. Good move, as 4 and 6 are redundant. Hijack over.

Early on, I'm liking Southern Hills. Misses feel appropriately penalized. Rough is not deep, but penal. Variety of ways to play each hole.

Completely agree. And as someone who never thought highly of Southern Hills at past major championships, I'm guessing that the Hanse redesign probably has a lot to do with this - certainly the visuals are more attractive to me now. Maybe the fact that they're playing it in May instead of June or August helps as well?

Tiger looks better physically than he did at the Masters. Moving quicker, doesn't have as pronounced a limp, crouches a little more to read putts. The game looks very rusty though.

If you caught any of the Buck/Collins Manningcast then I'm sorry you lost that part of your life.

Well we have Kielce now so that should make up for it. Hoping Manningcast style broadcasts won’t become the norm but I fear the ship may have sailed on that. That format requires a specific host/guests and the mannings make it work. But yeah, this ain’t it.

Scheffler hits a 3-wood from 308 to 10 feet on 5 for an eagle.

I still find it amusing that he wears TW gear. The man is world #1 and Masters champion. Time for Nike to give him a logo.

Just watched the Tiger press conference and he said he thought there would be more sand in some of the spots in the bunker, which is why he went long 3 times.

Then just now on the broadcast, JT and Koepka both hit long bunker shots and looked annoyed at the lack of sand in the trap.

Something to keep an eye on.
