The NFL draft is now less than a week away, so I figured I'd start a game thread to keep track of any draft-related news that may arise and to discuss the draft as it happens.

Here's a link to the NFL draft tracker (and prospect bios): https://www.nfl.com/draft/tracker/picks/

And here are the starting times and viewing options:

- Thursday, April 28 (8:00-11:30 p.m. EDT): NFL Draft, Round 1 – ABC, ABC App, ESPN, ESPN App, ESPN Radio, ESPN Deportes, NFL Network

- Friday, April 29 (7:00-11:30 p.m.): NFL Draft, Rounds 2 and 3 – ABC, ABC App, ESPN/ESPN2, ESPN App, ESPN Radio, ESPN Deportes, NFL Network

- Saturday, April 30 (12:00-7:00 p.m.): NFL Draft, Rounds 4–7 – ABC (ESPN simulcast), ABC App, ESPN App, ESPN Radio, ESPN Deportes, NFL Network

I think I’ll be finishing typing up the draft guide today/tonight to get it out Monday for draft week. Unlike last year there are more fits for them this year. The hard part was adjusting for defensive scheme as that isn’t clear yet. I ended up just noting which scheme they would fit best in or if they are versatile.

Still want to figure out if I want to go fight Strip traffic to go to this. Might be my best chance to check it out.

Sure seems like a TV event to me. But if milling about with a bunch of half-drunk loons making too much noise to understand what's going on, being unable to follow the commentary unless you watch a screen, and having difficulty joining the chaos here is on your bucket list ... by all means, go

Thanks as always for all of your heavy lifting, SMU_Sox. Is the draft guide in a google sheet like last year? That was super helpful tool to play with during the three days!

This is a three screen in same room event, with voice remote.

But probably home is indeed best

Best of both worlds. Have phone fully charged with ear buds. Watch on app while being their live.

Hadn't considered going. If we were having a SOSH party at the draft, though...

The Vegas SoSH party would seem to be when the full Patriots schedule is released and we know the date for Raiders game.

Now that is a functional organization where everyone is working together and on the same page. You want to know why bad franchises stay bad? Dysfunction and lack of organizational harmony.
It'll be fun to see which of those three players has the best career

It will be fun, agreed! If I had to guess though I think Ekwonu has the best career of the three and it might be at OG. Although I believe he will be a very good OT. Pro bowl traits there but the pass protection needs work. Hutchinson should also be in that Hall of the Very Good when he retires if I had to guess. Walker is the question mark. I think he can be a starter because he is that good of a run defender but he might just be an average starter who defends the run like a pro-bowler but rushes the passer like a guy who is at the end of the roster. None of these guys are real 1,1s. It's not their fault that the top of the draft is shit this year though. And by shit I mean you really only have 2-3 guys who are borderline blue-chip kind of players and one of them is a safety, Hamilton.

I think a lot of this comes down to the imaginary and flawed concept of floor vs ceiling. Do you want a high floor guy like Hutchinson who could be like hitting a double or triple or do you want to swing for the fences with Walker. Same concept to a lesser degree for Neal vs Ekwonu at LT.

If I may ask, who do you have as these?
I define a true-blue-chipper as someone who has a grade of 8.49 or better. 8.25's are close to it but not quite there. So this year I have 4 guys: Aidan Hutchinson, Derek Stingley, Kyle Hamilton, and... Drake London who I am very high on.

He is right below that tier, an 8.0. I have two guys in that tier, him and Jordan Davis. So 6 total firm kind of first round grades this year. That's it. A lot of guys in the 7.99 or 7.75 tiers.

7.99 = Will be very good player. Probable rookie starter. May or may not have pro bowl physical traits.

7.75 = Unique Potential. Pro bowl traits who needs critical technical development and consistency.

A lot of 7.75 guys will go first round. Walker is one. Thibs is one for me too.

I'd take anything you get from Walter Football with a giant grain of salt. Not a great source for information or even rumors. It could certainly be true but that source is shady.

Haven't been able to find which picks are involved.

Pats have #158 and #170 in the 5th
Texans have #183, #205 and #207 in the 6th, and also have #245 in the 7th

Per Evan Lazar the Pats dropped 13 spots to pick up #245, so that means #170 for #183 and #245.

I really don't get being so high on Drake London. He has good body control plus catch radius and can run over Pac-12 DBs like a modern day N'Keal, but he gets no separation.

Rumors and rumblings from Jacksonville from
@ShopTalkingWigg: GM likes Walker, HC like Ekwonu, owner likes Hutchinson.

Now that is a functional organization where everyone is working together and on the same page. You want to know why bad franchises stay bad? Dysfunction and lack of organizational harmony.
The betting market seems to feel this is the GM’s call. Walker went from +150 to -220 favorite this morning.

I saw him routinely get separation in 3 games. I’ve heard this elsewhere and I’m sorry but I don’t see it. He gets separation with his routes and his breaks. He’s also phenomenal at boxing guys out. I didn’t like Harry coming out and I don’t see an overlap here. London is already a great route runner with fantastic horizontal breaks. Harry couldn’t run routes to save his life and his breaks were sloppy.

Quick edit: I’m not the only person high on London who doesn’t agree with this criticism but the community is split on him.

I think the underlined is something that's so key that folks--even a ton of NFL reporters--totally don't get. Separation isn't generally something you get with raw speed, it's something you get with technique quickness body control. Edelman got a ton of separation while Dobson Dorsett Chad Jackson did not--and those later three guys could probably dust Edelman in the 40 yard dash. And the fact that London got some contested catches doesn't mean that he can't get separation--everyone is going to have some contested catches from time to time.

Appreciate those words and agree with them.

Some fun news, going to be on Mark Schofield's pod talking about the draft and the Patriots this year which will be dropping tomorrow. We do briefly discuss London. He doesn't see it either (separation concerns). Is he elite at it? No. Is he good though? Yes.

My dream scenario is trading back and getting Travis Jones, then Leo Chenal and/or Josh Paschal/Logan Hall/Arnold Ebiketie, and a third round guard like Sean Rhyan. I figure they will have 4 day 1-2 picks if they trade back and I'd target a nose-tackle, an edge, and an OG. With that 4th pick I'd be thinking about Chenal as an ILB/Edge hybrid, a WR like Pierce/Pickens/Watson/Skyy-Moore, or a CB like... uh well that's the problem. Corner is not great after round 1 for outside guys.

To me if you're going to go bare bones at a position I would rather go bare bones at corner because I like the fits at other important positions better and I think they can at least build some slot depth on day 3. You'd ideally then have to invest FA capital and/or draft capital there next year but that's going to be the case for whatever position they don't take high. You can't fix everything in one off-season.

I look at this draft as a brother to next year’s off season. They could do everything right this draft and still end up with a worse record next year, and I will be okay with that. As long as they are getting good players at core positions and their young players grow, we will be okay. Next year may appear to be a step back where the sports radio starts questioning Bill a lot, but I think 2023 is where we really see a pay out. It will be Mac’s third year and their salary cap problems should clear up.

Do right by this draft, just like they did last year.

@SMU_Sox looking forward to it - will listen tonight!

I hope your dreams come true, with the one addition that like many, I really do think the Pats must use an early pick on CB. Butler can't be the only addition for this year in the QB heavy AFC. Pats could still do your trade back if Kaiir Elam is available late 1st round, or just pick Andrew Booth with 21 if he falls to them due to injury concerns. My dream scenario would be that they were able to trade back and still get Booth (and of course have him be ready in time for training camp). In your gradings, you rated Booth at 7.99 vs Elam only at 7.25. What's the buzz on Elam vs. Booth? I see some predicting Elam as a late 1st rounder, but that doesn't match your grading...?

Sure so the deal with Elam is he is a bad run defender. Makes business decisions, doesn’t tackle consistently, and worst he doesn’t shed WR blocks. In coverage his wind-downs and transitions are clunky. He’s fine. He’s 44th on my board and 30th on the consensus board. The guys on my board are close to each other from 32-52 grade wise.

Booth is a limited starter and has some injury issues but he’s a tough physical corner with good athleticism and a capable and eager run defender. He can be prone to over aggressive pursuit and leaving his feet to tackle guys. He just needs to play under more control. Keep the intensity but play smarter.

edit: in general I view my board as directional. With these guys I only have time to watch and take notes on 2-3 games. You really need 4-6 to have a strong view. I figure I can get 80% of the way there and get a general idea of what the prospect does well and maybe struggles with. So Elam to conclude that example is someone I think is worthy of consideration at 30. Also, boards have flattish ranges. Throw in that some prospects are going to score higher in specific schemes and you could see a prospect like Washington Corner Trent McDuffie have a first round kind of grade for a zone team but a press-man heavy team but not have him on their board or see him as a 2nd round pick.

I thought most teams had moved beyond the jimmy Johnson chart a long time ago?
The article suggests that teams have their own proprietary charts because of these issues, but also that when trying to value trades the JJ chart is the "fallback" standard because everyone's internal chart is different and sometimes not well aligned when trying to do a deal.
