Part for the (hopeful) prediction, part for the acronym (it really should be Steve and Sandy Seem to Spend Stupidly)...

Almost the only thing we can agree on as NY and BOS fans is that laughing at the Mets is one of the most reliable sources of enjoyment in the sport, so kicking off this year's edition with a couple of contracts to keep an eye on as they begin...

Early this offseason (Dec 1) the Mets were the high bidders on talented CF Starling Marte (turning 34 in October) at 4/78. That in itself seemed like an fair to mild overpay, but now even before he has played a single game, they have moved him to RF in favor of Brandon Nimmo (who they previously had, of course). That's a big contract for a RF with only 126 career HRs in ten seasons, Marte I think loses a lot of value if he is now in RF for good.

Francisco Lindor's 10/341 deal to keep him out of FA also starts this year, I drooled over his potential acquisition for years for NYY but man that is a big deal for a guy whose OPS+ has gone down four years in a row now (132, 118, 104, 101).

In both cases, Steve and Sandy (I miss Brodie) targeted the guy who was the consensus best player available at that position and paid up for them, over $400M combined guaranteed. Good/great players, giant deals, we'll see.

Edit: I had to change the thread title because it's working out well, dammit.

Good time to start this thread....Degrom out with a stress fracture in his shoulder. Could miss the first 3 months of the season.

Actually this was why I started it last night, when I saw he was getting a MRI today.

Hosmer has 4/59 left, maybe he and Cano can eat ice cream together in the stands for $39M a year combined.

“The Padres have been attempting to trade first baseman Eric Hosmer for more than a year. The Mets are in active conversations with multiple clubs. In recent weeks, a possible match between the teams has emerged.

One concept that has been discussed would involve sending Hosmer and right-hander Chris Paddack to New York in exchange for left fielder-first baseman Dominic Smith, sources tell The Athletic. “

Hosmer had a front-loaded contract, his AAV hit is actually $18M a year minus $6.25M from the $25M for 4 years that SD would include. Paddack/Pagan make about $4.5M combined in 2022, Dom Smith makes $4M, so this would put the Mets around $292M AAV for 2022, over the 4th tax level (the 'Steve Cohen level', heh).

Is Paddack any good? His numbers are hard to figure out. 4.10 career FIP, but 1.5 HR/9 is a lot for a guy pitching in SD. If the Mets trade for him, probably reveals that they don’t expect deGrom back anytime soon.

That’s a mutual option, not a team option, so he’s still a FA after this year unless both sides agree to pick it up.

This looks stupid as hell if Diaz gives up 7 runs in a save opportunity but for now it’s my favorite thing in baseball

I completely agree; people forget sometimes that baseball (and sports in general) is supposed to be entertainment, and having a packed house with that is undeniably that

More towards this thread - I also think to be honest that having a little bit of swagger in baseball is good. Irrational confidence maybe isn't helpful (or, you know, huge bat flips when you're a sub 500 team), but the Mets have always had more of that 'I'm the little brother to the more successful team in town, and our fans are always on the edge of their seats waiting for the wheels to fall off' feeling, and that's not the feeling I get with this year's team at all

Feels like the mid 80’s again. How can anyone not love this trumpet thing? It’s amazing.

Nice article about Dr K (Dwight Gooden) in the Athletics. They're doing a series on Black Aces.

I think everyone can access this link.

I was in high school/college in NJ when he came on the scene in 1984. Was a huge Mets fan. Had Sunday season tickets. Remembered watching all of the games he pitched, especially that 1985 season. He was my favorite player on the team.

I moved to the Boston area after graduating in 89. It was harder to follow out-of-town teams back then so I switched to following Red Sox/Patriots instead of Mets/Giants.
