Two of my binkies in your top 100, SMU (Chenal and Cook) doesn't bode well for my hope that they'd be Day 3 guys back a few months ago...

Curious about @SMU_Sox thoughts on Zach Tom?

His physicals look good, strong size, great short shuttle (which seems to be something that has been a bit of an indicator of OL success).
Just on the physical side he looks a bit like a longer armed, slightly more athletic version of Thuney. Did he not make the list because of technique?
He didn't make the list because I didn't get to him when I posted the original list :).

I'll discuss Tom and post a board update.

Tom: I have him as a zone scheme fit. He lacks power and functional strength. The Pats have gone with undersized centers multiple times so he would fit from that perspective but imo he is a center only in their system. He is a special athlete. If he is there sometime on day 3 I think they'd consider him but as a center only prospect not likely imo until late. It would be better to take an IOL who can also backup OG too.

As for my board update: I am finishing up edges. I am 100% done all of OL. I am going to finish edge, DT, ILB, safety, corner, WR and then move on to QB, RB, and TE. I will finish up with about 250 prospects.

Another question, if you have more than one guy with the same grade, are you ranking them based on personal preference? Position value? Other?
Maybe along the same lines as this question, when you have say a 7.75 above a 7.99 is this primarily a statement about potential upside?

Can you remind me/us (or point us to the appropriate place) what the rating scores equate to qualitatively?
I found this, so this partially answers my question:
I have a 7.99 on him right now but I want to see his testing because that is important to edge. A 7.99 is: Will be very good player. Probable rookie starter. May or may not have pro bowl physical traits. I think his floor with mediocre testing is a 7-7.5: Can be a good starter you can win with. Should compete for role/starting position. May be immediate contributor.

Quick edit: a 7.99 in most years is a back end of the first or an early to mid 2nd round kind of grade. This year there aren't a lot of blue chippers but there are a lot of 7+ players, or quality starters.

Edit: @Saints Rest
Here is the scale again:

Edit: this is a very rough translation. And it doesn't stack perfectly.

Sure-fire blue-chip players:
9.00 Dominant Player. All-Pro Traits. Should develop into the best at his position.
8.99-8.50 Consistent Pro Bowler. Gameplan changer. Very few flaws if any.

Early to middle first rounders
8.49-8.00 Will be very good player. Rookie Starter. Should have pro bowl physical traits.

Middle first rounders to early 2nds:
7.99 Will be very good player. Probable rookie starter. May or may not have pro bowl physical traits.
7.75 Unique Potential. Pro bowl traits who needs critical technical development and consistency.

2nd rounders:
7.5-7.0 Can be a good starter you can win with. Should compete for a role/starting position. May be immediate contributor.

Late 2nd rounders to 3rd rounders.
6.99-6.50 Functional starter in first 3 years who you should win with. No fatal flaws. Development needed.

Late 3rd to 4th rounders:
6.49-6.00 Flash Starter Tools. Quality Role player and/or Good ST. Emergency Starter.

4th to 5th rounders:
5.99-5.50 Quality role player and contributor for scheme specific teams.

6th to 7th Rounders:
5.49-5.00 Draftable player with intriguing physical tools or a functional role player to strengthen the 53.

7th rounders to priority free agents:
4.99-4.50 Priority Free Agent. Has a couple tools that you want to work with.

UDFAs:
4.49-4.00 Undrafted Free Agent. Will go on the 90 man roster somewhere.
3.99-3.50 Invite to rookie mini camp. At least one intriguing quality to see live.

Nopes:
3.49-3.00 Off radar due to injury, size, position projection, etc. May be successful in CFL/AFL/etc.
2.00 Incomplete
1.00 Reject

Personal preference without positional value. I will actually build out a board this year where I assign positional weights to see what that looks like.

Maybe along the same lines as this question, when you have say a 7.75 above a 7.99 is this primarily a statement about potential upside?
Yes - so lets take Thibodeaux, 10th on the board, vs Jermaine Johnson, 9th on the board. Jermaine Johnson is such a clean eval and has such great traits that I value his floor. He has the floor of a guy just below the pro bowl level. He might even make it to the pro bowl but I think he is just a cut below that. That being said he is one of the best run defending edges in the draft the last 2-3 years AND he is a very good pass rusher. I've gushed about him before. You don't know anything for sure with guys but I feel very confident that he is a high end starter. Thibodeaux though is someone who if he hits his potential has clear pro bowl level burst and pass rush potential. My concern with him is that he never actually develops more as a pass rusher as he hasn't done much in 3 years to advance his arsenal.

Another example is Ekwonu, 7.75 and 8th, vs Neal 7.99 and 11th. I think Neal will be a very good starter but Ekwonu is already the best run blocking OT I have seen and if he can improve his pass pro technique we're looking at an all-pro. I don't think Neal gets close to that. I don't even think he ever makes a pro bowl. So I have Ekwonu higher there.

Next year I might do that for the about 6.49-6.5 areas. I might want to take a guy who flashes starting skills with high end traits like DB Tariq Woolen or edge-OLB Dominique Robinson vs a low end starter with a decent floor like OG Lecitus Smith.

Also I think the draft media is overrating Thibs a bit. I heard a comp I really liked which is he is a smaller and less developed Clowney coming out who isn’t as good vs the run. As a pass rusher right now he’s like Rivera a bit: one pitch but it’s a good one (speed to power).

I'm not sure if this is the right place but I just watched an interesting discussion about what having Groh being from the college scouting side in charge of the draft this year vs. Ziegler being from the pro side in charge of last year's draft and what that might mean in terms of changes (if any). I was curious what the draftniks might think about this. The beginning premise was that last year was more of a "chalk" draft from Ziegler who was then aggressive and creative in free agency and could we see the reverse this year?

Never heard of this dude. Seems like an interesting Day 3 prospect — should be a useful goal-line back, speculation about a swiitch to LB suggests he should be a capable ST guy, and the strength/speed combo seems like he might have upside (40 time was 4.44).

Teague was a pretty good RB in in 2019 with the Buckeyes but ended up splitting carries with Trey Sermon in 2020 and got hurt this year.

He’s a north/south power back with some juice but I think he is more of a RB3/4 type. I looked at him in 2019 assuming he was coming out in 2020. His COD and vision are below average. He also doesn’t set up his lanes well.

I just learned this.

Damone Clark, with a 7.5 score from SMU above, will have spinal fusion surgery after tests at the combine revealed a medical problem. This is expected to keep him out for his entire rookie season although he is expected to make a full recovery. Must be so heart breaking for him, but maybe the Pats can get a bargain in the late rounds.

He is one of the guys I mentioned as a Patriots prototype. I like his tape a lot. He should be an above average to quality starter for them. I have three herniated discs in my back so now I have a soft spot for him. Check out his tape vs Bama if you want to see how good he can be!

Quick note: LSU defensive players who wear 18 are the leaders of the team. Clark is a tone setter on the field and a leader on and off of it.

I had always thought that the Patriots should be looking to come out of this draft with two linebackers as the team lost Hightower, Van Noy, Collins and Winovich and brought in Mack Wilson (and I understand that Wilson's value as a player is primarily due to his special teams contributions). We can hope that McMillan comes back from his injury and contributes. We can hope that Bentley takes a step forward. We can hope that Perkins is able to come out of his red-shirt rookie season and is in a position to contribute. All that said, linebacker/edge is a huge need on this team.

I, personally, have also viewed this current off-season (free agency and draft), as well as the coming season and next year's off-season (free agency and draft) as all being parts of a foundation-setting bridge period with an ultimate goal of building towards the 2023 season (Mac's third year on his rookie contract). I want the team to do well next year in terms of wins and making the post-season but even more than that I want to see growth from the young players in the coming season. If I had to choose between either wrapping up the 2022 season 12-5 with a play-off victory but having disappointing performance's from the young individual players with a need to make serious changes to the roster versus finishing the season 7-10, finishing third in the division, but seeing huge growth from the young core of this team and having a solid team that we can build on in the next off-season, I am taking the 7-10 season.

All of this is a long way of saying if we can draft Clark at a discount due to his surgery I'm completely on board especially if he is the second of third linebacker we draft. Like if we can get a player like Muma/Chenal/Tindall at 54 (or in that area if they trade up or trade down) and get Clark around 127 or later, that would be absolutely wonderful.

Quick question for @SMU_Sox:

Given the apparent depth of defensive talent in the draft, and the losses in the front seven, is it likely the Patriots would go all-defense in the first three rounds?

Likewise, is it reasonable to expect that a deep draft reduces the likelihood that the Patriots can turn their early picks into multiple later picks (my preference)?

I'm not SMU Sox but I could easily see them having a defense heavy first couple of picks. If I were a betting man I do think they take an offensive lineman somewhere in the first 100 or so picks in the draft (whether it's IOL or OT depends a bit on what they think of guys like Justin Herron an Durant) so whether they go all defense with their first three picks might depend a little on how much they trade around but I don't see them waiting for 127 to pick an offensive lineman.

127 is a pretty good looking place to take a running back by the way and Harris/White don't seem likely to be pats for the long term. And it would drive Pats fans crazy to see them not pick a wide receiver before they pick. But Kyren Williams is great at pass protection....

1st Round — 21st overall (assigned)
2nd Round — 54th overall (assigned)
3rd Round — 85th overall (assigned)
4th Round — 127th overall (assigned)
5th Round — 170th overall (from Tampa Bay via Shaq Mason trade)
6th Round — 200th overall (assigned)
6th Round — 210th overall (from L.A. Rams via Sony Michel trade)

I expect them to take an ILB, a NT, a corner, a FS of the future, an edge, an X receiver, and an IOL/LG with their picks. I could easily see a draft where they take Travis Jones or Jordan Davis early, then an ILB who can play some OLB like Chenal, and then maybe shift over and grab an X, grab an IOL. First 2/3 picks though I think will be on defense. If they went 3/3 on defense wouldn't shock me at all.

Quick edit: I don't expect them to draft all of the above picks. There is only so much you can do with one draft. I do expect at least half of those selections though...

Updated big board. I am 100% done with defense. Unless a name comes up in the last week or so I am finished. I am probably halfway through TEs, RBs, and QBs but don't want to add them until I am done their groups. I will be writing a Patriots Draft Superlatives article hopefully sometime later this week or early next week.

I think they are going defense early and often but one thing I can’t figure out is what scheme they want to run next year. I still don’t know two weeks away if they are going to go to more zone, if they want a 4-3 or 3-4, etc. I know they want to be in nickel and probably dime more but it’s so hard to figure out who fits better if you don’t know what kind of scheme they want to run. Unless they play Uche, Perkins, or Jennings at edge they would have to run a 4-3 right now and a slimmed down Wise would be the other edge… I guess.

SMU great list, eager to see how predictive it is especially for the Pats.

One critique from my perpetual "Stanford-centric" view--Thomas Booker at 193? Puh-leeze. Should be top ten easy! (Oh, "future GM" or "defensive coordinator" aren't draftable? Ok, 193 is good--but but him on the short list of guys super likely to be picked by the Pats given his versatility and intelligence).

Once you get to the 5.5-6.5 range it’s just a matter of projection to me. You could stack those 120 players in different ways and I’m not going to fuss much. You get to a point and the difference in the quality of the prospects and their chances to become a starter or backup flattens… a lot. For most of us you’ll read our scouting reports and the content and analysis of who the prospect is won’t be too different. The projections will be. That’s the hard part for me is figuring out projection between mid to late 3’s through the back half of the guys who I think could be quality role players or starters.

Marcus Jones range via PFF, Dane Brugler, Bleacher Report, and PFF is 58-190. That’s just one example of a guy who is all over the place on boards.

This all make sense and i'm just teasing about the Booker rating. I have no idea how good he is and i guess some folks are thinking about converting him to offensive line which makes him a barely draftable prospect in my mind.

I do know that a guy with a 3.88 GPA in econ who is by all accounts a football nerd who helps the defensive backfield with their coverage assignments is going to make Bill feel a little weak in the knees though.

Oh I know you’re kidding I just felt like illustrating how the draft isn’t some cut and dry science is nice around this time of year. :)

SMU, where does Damone Clark fall to in the draft due to his surgery? I notice you have him at 38. Similarly you have Ojabo at 24. Does his medical history impact his draft position at all? I assume Ojabo is still taken by day 2 but I have no idea where Clark is taken.

I don’t adjust for injury. I can’t. I can tell you what they were when they healthy.

With Ojabo I wouldn’t be shocked if he fell to the mid second or even third round. Here’s why: the guys has pass rush moves for days. He’s really advanced with his hands. As a pass rush prospect he’s truly top notch. As a complete prospect and a run defender he’s severely lacking. Think Uche but more advanced as a rusher. Not a ton of playing time. Not a true edge setter. Now add to that this is an injury that will put him on the shelf for a year and then his first year back is year 2. Year 2 is a developmental year for him. So you’d probably have him as a DPR year 2 but not a full time player. Year 3 is when he would, hopefully, be able to be a full time starter. But even then he was someone I thought might not get to being a full time player until he had 2 full years under his belt. So he might not get to his potential until year 4! Also, you don’t know if he’s going to lose any explosiveness. It’s also considered a worse injury to have vs a torn ACL. So the injury could impact him as a pass rusher and that’s what you’re drafting him for in the first place. Ojabo is a bet on upside. Now the upside is potentially diminished and the timeline is off by a year. If he fell to even day 3 it wouldn’t shock me but I think someone scoops him up between picks 50-100.

Clark is a different story. I’ve heard there are significant career concerns around the injury. I believe Ross and DK Metcalf had those injuries. DK fell to pick 63 or 64. But DK had some insane athletic traits and size. Clark is freaky in his own right but plays a less valuable position and will likely miss his first year whereas DK was going to be able to play in training camp. Clark could go undrafted or day 3. He reminds me a little of Trey Smith last year. Smith’s tape was excellent but he fell to the 6th round because of injury concerns.

This may already exist somewhere on SOSH, but I offer it up anyway - I mined the mock drafts of 8 experts (Brugler, Kiper Jr, Easterling, Walter Cherepinsky, Reuter, Trapasso, McShay, Wilson). I sourced the main experts quoted on Patriots.com as I am not as much of a draftnik as others on this thread.

They go to different depths (Kiper and McShay only 2 rounds, the others 3+), and I have gone to 5 rounds where possible, and compared with @SMU_Sox rankings and gradings. NB I have chosen not to enter the data from experts (Zierlein Mcintyre etc.) who only have offered 1 round publicly.

If anybody would like to nominate other experts / data sources for mock draft opinions, I can alter the spreadsheet accordingly. As it stands now, it is an interesting amalgamation of varying viewpoints.

Edit1: I included for completeness at the end of the table 26 players who appeared in the experts' mock drafts but not in @SMU_Sox rankings.

Edit2: not quite sure how to put data neatly on the board and excel upload was blocked, so I spoilered it to remove clutter. If somebody can advise me on how to post it properly I would be happy to.

I finished writing it and my vertical board and horizontal board are finished. I’m in the capable hands of the best writer and editor I know. But since I’m done I’ve thought about some of the positions and where there is depth vs lack of depth. I’ll name names in the guide. Let’s skim the positions

Offensive Tackle is basically 6 guys and 3-4 of them are probably off the board by 21. There are no second rounders they would traditionally be interested in. There are some round 3 but more likely day 3 OTs. If they want an OT they have to strike fast and early because there is little to no day 2 talent. How much will they like Trevor Penning, Raimann, and Tyler Smith?

Interior offensive line is different. There are only two guys at the top of the class, Zion Johnson and Kenyon Green. Both could possibly play OT. After that there are a bunch of round 3 prospects and plenty of day 3 guys. They can probably get a starter in round 3 but if they want someone who is plug-and-play they will probably have to strike early. If they take someone in the third round they might be able to start right away depending on the prospect.

Running back there are 3-4 good receiving prospects (all day 3) and backup early down RBs too day 3. If they want to invest here there are a lot of good matches. But the room is a little crowded…

Wide Receiver there are 5-6 guys they might like day 2. 4 potential X receivers and 1-2 slots. I don’t think they take anyone round 1.They have a ton of options day 3. My personal favorite is still Kyle Philips and he is a very good punt returner too. If he’s available in the fifth round I think he’s a Patriot.

Tight end has a lot of depth options who are athletes so you never know but this is not a year to invest an early pick at the position. If they want to light their draft picks on fire day 3 that’s fine.

There are some day 3 QBs they might like. Or they could ride out the last year with Stidham and draft one next year.

IDL (interior defensive line)

Quick note but some of the edge defenders have 5 or even 3 tech or interior rushing ability but I’m talking about the 280 pound minimum really like 290+ pound defensive tackles here. You have two monsters at NT and then really only one guy day 2 worth considering unless they are higher on Winfrey than I am and think he fits whatever they want to do. I’m skeptical. Day 3 has a lot of good interior defensive depth and run defending or pass rushing specialists. There is quality depth to be had for sure and more than other positions. Unfortunately the top and middle of this class are barren.

Edge is just packed with guys with a couple on day 1 but 6-8 guys days 2 and even more day 3. Edge is the best positional group in this class. Virtually every type of profile is represented by multiple people. It’s incredible how deep and wide the class is.

ILB depends on what they want to do. Rounds 2-3-4-5 are also loaded with guys for them. If they want to keep a similar profile to what they’ve done in the past but just a little lighter that’s there as well as guys who are more modern fits. It’s another great class but not so much at the top. Leo Chanel ILB/OLB/NT/DT/Super-Hero imo would absolutely wreck on this team. Had to mention him. He’s a better pass rusher right now at edge than some of the guys who will go before him. Also while the question of “who is the next Micah Parsons?” is a stupid one if you’re looking for someone who could produce as he did as a pass rusher that’s Chenal.

S
There are two or three guys in the first round or second they’d like and then it’s a drop off. There are a bunch of late 3s to 4ths and mid day 3 picks that could interest them.

CB
It’s a top heavy class with 4-5 guys they might like in the first or second round and then a drop off to traits based developmental guys who they might take in the 3rd or 4th or later rounds. There are good slot corners in every round.

Personally I would avoid WR, ILB, TE, and RB in the first this year because of the depth of the class. Maybe edge too. You could pass on OG but that depends on how you think CFL will do in the NFL as well as how ready you think some of the round 3/4 IOL are. Zion Johnson might be someone you take as your LG this year and see how he looks in practice as LT.

If you’re looking at positions with bad depth (so maybe more interested in taking a good fit early): OT, IDL, S and maybe outside CB.

Unless someone they think is truly special falls into their lap at 21 it seems like their best strategy would be to accumulate another day 2 pick and trade back.

The other thing to remember is they won’t be able to solve all their numerous holes with early picks. A position or two might look hairy going into camp.

I like the idea of picking Davis at 21 if he slides, but trading back if he isn't there. I'd love to get younger at LB / Edge and I think there are quite a few guys that will be around in the 45 - 65 range and if you can pick up an extra pick or 2 we would have a chance to double up. Also Bill has been great at picking up later round interior OL so I'd rather wait. CB is a bit trickier, but maybe a guy like Armour Davis slips a bit. Curious about how much Damone Clark slips because of his injury but he would be a great red shirt guy if he slips far enough, but my guess is someone will take a shot.

Going to cross-post this here. I'll fill in the links as they come out:

Here are the 2022 Offensive Fits.

Here are the 2022 Defensive Fits.

Here is my big board google sheet. Tab 1 is the big board, tab 2 is the big board but filtered for all average or better fits, and tab 3 is the 3.5 and above horizontal board.

Patriots met with him. Damn.

No, I don't have his tape but check out the thread. Explosive and powerful but D3 competition so...
He has Pats LB size. His RAS grade is slightly better as a LB too at 8.03. That would probably improve if those 40 numbers don't reflect reality. It might be interesting to see if he can play with his hand off the ground. There's Framingham vs. Fitchburg on Youtube and I watched a quarter, but its not something I can get much out of except he plays with a bit of an edge, which is nice.
