I just saw Burks run. 1) he would have been faster but his form sucked, and 2) a 4.5 is really good at 225 pounds. Trust the tape. He’s basically a 4.45 guy at his weight.

Bill needs to add some speed to the WR group. Huh. *every receiver runs faster than a 4.5*. Huh.

This WR group is not just deep but fast too. There are so many options… one of the guys I like a lot as a potential X is Alec Pierce:

49882

He just ran a 4.33 at 211 pounds and posted a 40.5 inch vertical.

The only WR I want in the 1st is MAYBE Williams. Otherwise I'm happy waiting.

Really I hope a bunch go early and we get to snag a guy like Davis or some other front 7 stud

The only thing Williams does is run really fast, or at least used to do. He is the biggest risk in this draft by far because he is still likely to be drafted due to his 2021 breakout season but that was his only productive season of his career, he sat for 3yrs in OSU and there has to be a reason why. Even without the ACL injury which will almost assure he misses critical rookie camp for a raw WR he would have been a big project. His ceiling is probably DeSean Jackson floor Mecole Hardman. If he was there in the 4th sure take a shot but he will be greatly overdrafted in the late 2nd early 3rd. I'd much rather take a shot on Pickens who will be drafted in a similar range but has already mostly recovered from his ACL injury. Not as fast but better at everything else a WR needs to do.

@SMU_Sox with all these absurd 40 times should they almost be taken with a grain of salt? Seems like the track may have played a factor, don't recall seeing this many WRs greatly exceed the expected 40 times in a long time. This class is fast but don't think they are this fast so either the track really helped or everyone got really good at running in a straight line. Would love to hear your thoughts on this.

I’ll also throw my name into the “What’s the deal with Christian Watson” pile. Haven’t seen him play at all, but got some senior bowl hype and tested ridiculously well. Anything here, or all noise?

Extremely raw prospect, but like you said he's the freakiest of the athletic freaks. I wouldn't mind them double dipping with somebody like Wan'Dale Robinson in the 2nd and Watson in the 3rd or 4th.

yeah... Watson isn't getting past the 2nd, word is he might go late 1st.

I have a big issue with overrating the combine results. John Ross anyone? I hate the day after the combine because IMO people overreact a little bit (or a lot). If you move from early day 3 to mid 2nd or late first man I can't stress how wrong you are doing this. I haven't looked at Watson yet but I really don't like bumping a guy that much because he is a freak athlete. That strikes me as the wrong way to mitigate risk and find a good receiver.

A couple years ago DJ looked at the top 10 players for receiving yards and the top 10 for receptions. Top 10 receiving yards players had a 4.5 40 average and top 10 receptions had a 4.53 or 4.55 average. Top speed is overrated. There is so much more to being a receiver than being able to run fast in a straight line. Yes, it is valuable, and speed is a nice weapon but if Watson is a first rounder vs a 4th because of track speed? That's just silly.

Tolbert is an intriguing option. Seems to be one of if not the best route runners in this class and has a good size/speed/strength combo. A bit older for a rookie so probably close to his peak athletically but he could be good value in the 3rd. Not a crazy high ceiling but a very safe floor and would still be significantly more athletic than just about anyone else NE will have at WR.

I think a lot of these guys look fast on tape but it was knowing how fast exactly are they. The 40 doesn't tell us how fast they are playing, but for the guys where you can see they can get vertical and fast it helps give you a clue to their potential there. The TEs all tested above average too. It makes you think, right? We know these guys are getting better at combine prep but these results were stunning.

We apparently met with Kyren Williams.

He then ran a 4.7 40 at 5'9"..... not a lot of guys that size run that slow, and basically none of them made it in the NFL. N
Now some of that may be that anyone who thinks he's gonna run that slow just doesn't run, which is probably what Williams should have done.

Of the Notre Dame players coming out this year the one I want the Patriots to look at is Kevin Austin. Per SI:

40 Time: 4.43 seconds
Vertical Jump: 39”
Broad Jump: 11’
3 Cone Drill: 6.71 seconds
Short Shuttle: 4.15 seconds

Overall, Austin tied for 9th in the 40-yard dash, his vertical jump tied for 3rd, his shuttle time tied for 2nd and his 3-Cone time ranked 1st, and there wasn't anyone close. The next closest time was 6.98. For context, the 15th best 3-Cone yesterday was closer to the 2nd best time than the 2nd best time was to Austin.
He had trouble getting his shit together at Notre Dame, but the QB situation for the Irish was a bit choppy the last year and the WR coaching has left a lot to be desired. I would not mind a roll of the dice on a 6'2 200 lb WR with his speed and quickness.

Someone had an interesting piece on 3 cones, basically the numbers have been terrible the last few years because they moved it to the very end and so most of the top guys just don't even do it. Like this year, Watson, Olave, Wilson, Pickens, all skipped it.

I'm no draft expert, just a Boise State fan.
But, man, after his week at the senior bowl and with today's combine numbers -- and his stellar career in Boise -- you guys should really be looking at Khalil Shakir.

I'd be surprised, Bill has generally seemed to put a lot of emphasis on agility, His 3 cone in partcular would be the worst of any WR Bill drafted (except Slater, but he wasn't drafted to play WR)

I don’t care who is on the board with the Pats pick. He may not even make it to 21 but if he does, sprint up and get Travon Walker. I would love to see what Bill/Steve/Mayo do with him. What an upgrade on the front 7 that is badly needed.

I'm a Davis fan but does the 40 correlate to DT success at all? I'd think that is one of the least meaningful tests for a pure DT. Bench, vertical, broad all seem to translate more to DT than 40. If anything that 40 just prob put him out of reach for NE.

Doesn’t look like either did all the drills, but 6.91 3-cone for Beavers and 4.53 40 for Chenab both stood out to me for guys who were supposed to have more questionable athleticism. None of the guys I hoped would be available at 53 or 85 are going to be there, are they?

Respectfully Chenal and Beavers were on Bruce Feldman’s Freaks list. Chenal as an overall freak including his speed and Beavers for his power. Beavers CoD drills are something that contradicts his tape. For a high cut guy that 3-cone is not only surprising but excellent.

Maybe Chenal just gets assumed to be slow because he’s a big white guy? Granted, it’s the NFL combine scouting report, but there’s a direct line the he “lacks speed and burst” and I feel like I’ve read other pre-draft stuff that left me not expecting a 4.5 40 time.

Peter King quotes Todd McShay on a couple of combine players that might catch the Patriots eye

Troy Andersen, LB, Montana State. Rising. The former running back and quarterback earned FCS defensive player of the year, had a great showing at the Senior Bowl and just tore up the combine. At 6-3 ½ and 243 pounds, he ran a 4.42 40. I think he’s a day one starter and will be a second-round pick.

Bo Melton, WR, Rutgers. Rising. I need to go back and study more tape on Melton. I saw speed on tape but didn’t think he was a 4.34 guy, which is what he ran here in Indy. He also crushed the broad jump, vertical, and the 3-cone. Quietly had one of the best combine workouts of all the offensive skills players. He’s a really intriguing mid-round prospect.

At the end of the Day these guys get paid to actually Play Football. Tape (assuming in enough quantity and against high caliber competition) seems way more reliable then Combine testing.
Granted in the case of guys from NDState the combine takes on more weight. But its just that. A portion of the puzzle.

Besides isnt a tenth of a second like 1 yard at a 40 yard "race". I would much rather have 4.48 guy who runs great routes and beats the 4.33 CB by 3 yards then a guy who runs a 4.31 and runs shitty routes. Especially with an accurate QB....with a less then laser arm....but that a different subject.

Yes and no.

College isn't the pros, most of that tape is against guys who would never sniff the league and what worked to get open against them doesn't in the pros.

The 40 is generally overrated, but a lot of drills really aren't, because you're moving into the deep waters of athleticism. Sure there are some guys who run bad 40s and make up for it with routes... but not many, and honestly most of them really make up for it with elite agility or explosion. There aren't many guys who aren't top athletes in the NFL at any position.

LB Leo Chenal numbers from his Pro Day today: 6.84s 3-cone, 3.94s short shuttle with 34 bench reps

Ummm..... I think we're gonna need to draft him in Round 2 if the Pats hope to get him. Those are eye-popping numbers for a middle linebacker.

In the first 3 rounds they typically draft X receivers. They usually prefer bigger guys 195+ pounds, usually over 200, and an 8+ RAS (so very athletic - RAS stands for relative athletic score). Size, speed, and athleticism and projected at X is usually how they operate.

Here are some names at WR they might be interested in based on their history drafting the position in order of where I think they will go:

1) Drake London - only flaw with him is he might not be fast enough for them. He’s also probably gone by 21.
2) Treylon Burks - flaw here is his testing numbers are worse than his tape and gps data. Make of that what you will. He’s a tick under the testing athleticism they like.
3) George Pickens - he has the size, speed, and athletic profile they like but he has some significant off field character and coachability/culture/attitude issues. If the rumors are true probably off their boards.
4) Christian Watson - a binkie of mine after watching him tonight. He returns kicks and I think also played as a gunner but could be wrong. He is nearly a perfect RAS and 6’4” 208 with room to add more weight. He’s a prototype Patriot. Would probably have to draft him with their 2nd.
5) Skyy Moore - knock here is he’s a little small at ~5’10” 195 but reminds me a bit of Deion Branch and Julian Edelman. He might be best as a slot but could play outside. He’s also a little under their RAS preferences at a high 6. Surprisingly his agilities scores were bad.
6) Alec Pierce - he has the size and speed they want as well as athletic testing as a 9+ guy himself. He is a developmental X. Has some outstanding flashes but needs a lot of work on route running and his breaks.

I haven’t done Justyn Ross yet. He’s a medical concern but he has the size they like. I have another 15-20 receivers to go. Will update with later guys I see as X fits.

Yes, one of his mocks in mid-February had the Pats grabbing Chenal at 21. PFF is a big fan. Chenal was #37 on their big board before the combine and pro day.

Chenal isn’t for everyone’s scheme, but any of Belichick’s disciples will love the skill set he brings to the table. The Wisconsin product has the block-beating ability and football IQ to seamlessly replace Dont’a Hightower. He recorded the highest run-defense grade and second-highest pass-rushing grade among linebackers in college football last year.

My initial board:

I haven't done RB, TE, QB and need to finish a bunch of positions so I will be missing some guys you might have seen at the top.

Scale:
9.00 Dominant Player. All-Pro Traits. Should develop into the best at his position.
8.99-8.50 Consistent Pro Bowler. Gameplan changer. Very few flaws if any.
8.49-8.00 Will be very good player. Rookie Starter. Should have pro bowl physical traits.
7.99 Will be very good player. Probable rookie starter. May or may not have pro bowl physical traits.
7.75 Unique Potential. Pro bowl traits who needs critical technical development and consistency.
7.5-7.0 Can be a good starter you can win with. Should compete for a role/starting position. May be immediate contributor.
6.99-6.50 Functional starter in first 3 years who you should win with. No fatal flaws. Development needed.
6.49-6.00 Flash Starter Tools. Quality Role player and/or Good ST. Emergency Starter.
5.99-5.50 Quality role player and contributor for scheme specific teams.
5.49-5.00 Draftable player with intriguing physical tools or a functional role player to strengthen the 53.
4.99-4.50 Priority Free Agent. Has a couple tools that you want to work with.
4.49-4.00 Undrafted Free Agent. Will go on the 90 man roster somewhere.
3.99-3.50 Invite to rookie mini camp. At least one intriguing quality to see live.
3.49-3.00 Off radar due to injury, size, position projection, etc. May be successful in CFL/AFL/etc.
2.00 Incomplete
1.00 Reject

This year I am mixing up my 7.75s and 7.99s.

Curious about @SMU_Sox thoughts on Zach Tom?

His physicals look good, strong size, great short shuttle (which seems to be something that has been a bit of an indicator of OL success).
Just on the physical side he looks a bit like a longer armed, slightly more athletic version of Thuney. Did he not make the list because of technique?
