Another game where the defense started terribly but then put the clamps on in the second half. Really sloppy first half.

Offense looked completely unstoppable at times. Waddle and Tyreek both go over 100 and that was one of Tua’s best games as a pro. He had a few absolute dimes, like the ball to Waddle for his second TD and that ball on the wheel route to Tyreek to start the final drive. That was insane ball placement and accuracy to lft it over two defenders.

The penalties were middle school level though. Wilkins got flagged for offsides three separate times.

Eichenberg appears to be hurt significantly. With Austin Jackson scheduled to be returning next week, it’ll be interesting to see what they do there.

Miami’s secondary is so depleted and Gesicki is such a luxury item in the offense, I would be trying to move him for either a DB, OG, or a pass rusher.

Bailey Zappe looked like Joe Montana against the Lions. They’re a terrible defensive team.

I was most impressed by how Miami’s D made adjustments and pitched a shutout in the second half after getting rolled on the first 3-4 drives of the game. Keeping a league-average offense off the board for an entire half is no small feat; doing it against a team that clearly had cracked the code on your initial game plan is impressive.

It’s a fair point. I think what I meant by the offense looking good was that they should have looked good against the Steelers but Tua was clearly shaking off a bit of rust.

They should have looked good against Detroit, and they did, and Tua also looked much closer to the pre-concussion Tua we saw start the year than what we saw last week. Even picked up a few yards on the ground and slid. Baby steps.

I haven’t quite figured out what is happening to the secondary early in games, but to Boyer’s credit, they made the adjustments at halftime and played significantly better.

How fun is it to be a Dolphins fan right now? (Note: This is a rhetorical question. It's a ton of f-cking fun.)

Miami's next 5 games are as follows: Bears, Browns, Texans, 49ers, and Chargers.

Fortunately, the team seems to be ascending at the right time, as at least 4 wins have to be the target, with the schedule getting noticeably more challenging afterward (@Buffalo, Packers, @Patriots, Jets).

This makes the acquisitions of Chubb and Wilson all the more important for the crucial 6-week stretch and beyond. The Dolphins went "all in" in this year's team with players figuring to remain long-term pieces. While there's no question Bradley Chubb will be signed long-term, I fully expect Wilson to be extended before the end of the year, as well. He's remarkably underrated and creates a terrific 1-2 punch with Mostert, who likely also gets extended.

So, are the Dolphins Super Bowl contenders now?

Not quite.

While I do think that they have a solid puncher's chance of making a run, ala last season's Bengals, I still view Miami as a potential Bills/Chiefs contender … but in its infancy stage. Tua's progressing as you'd expect a top QB prospect to do, but he's not at the point of being consistently excellent, like Allen or Mahomes. The Dolphins also don't have the QB/HC/System duration that Reid and McDermott have right now. The Bills and Chiefs doing everything well from penalties, special teams, and situational football. Miami's weaknesses in these areas will likely be the reason for their season eventually ending prematurely.

All that said, this season figures to remain a lot of fun and highly entertaining. The future is as bright as its been in quite a long time.

Was writing my post while pdaj posted. I agree with your sentiment.

After digesting the trades and doing some thinking, a few things are clear today:

Miami is all-in on Tua. They’ve booted all their first round picks this year and last year to surround him with a team capable of winning right now.

Miami is all-in on winning right now. With the way they’ve structured their contracts and thinking about a potential Tua extension a year or two from now, Miami has given themselves a 4-5 year window to win with the core of this team, starting in 2022.

Miami isn’t on the level of Buffalo or KC, who are consistently elite, week in and week out, but I think they have the talent and have shown that in a given week, they can be as good as anyone in the AFC.

At this point, my expectation has moved from playoffs, to playoff win(s). Not many teams are going to want to play this Dolphins offense and the defense has shown wild volatility, but they are capable of playing well and just addressed maybe their most glaring weakness.

Absolutely; which makes the future incredibly exciting. After the next 4-5 years, we'll need Tua to be able to carry an offense with younger, cheaper playmakers. This is rare for QBs to do pre-30.

It's a bit entertaining how quickly the previous Tua haters have reversed course. If they're not outright apologizing, they're strategically moving the goalposts.

Is all the Tua love a bit too fast? Arguably. But with this current environment, I truly believe the only thing from preventing him becoming the next Drew Brees, as some envisioned, is health.

Tua will always have physical limitations, but he’s in a near perfect situation in terms of skill players and coaching. Tyreek married with the playaction/RPO plays is opening up gigantic holes in the intermediate areas and Tua has been destroying teams in those areas.

Health remains a concern, but Tua controls a lot of that himself. If he stops trying to be a hero and realizes that being available for the next play and the next week is a lot more valuable than any one play, he can likely stay on the field as well as anyone else. Throw the ball away, slide, take the sack. All things he can control.

Feels like Packets, Pats, Jets, Buffalo is an easier grouping than the first 5.

Bears aren’t as bad as their record suggests, Browns aren’t either. 49ers and Chargers are both games Miami might be underdogs in.

Miami is probably favored against Green Bay, NE, and the Jets.

So I agree, I think.

Thanks for the insight, j-man.

Chubb does have an injury history, but it isn’t as concerning as someone like DeVante Parker, for example. It seems like he had an ACL and bone spurs.

If he was missing games consistently due to soft tissue injuries, that would be concerning because it suggests he maybe isn’t taking care of his body like he should. ACL isn’t preventable and bone spurs is just wear and tear from a life of playing football.

This looks like the first season since his rookie year where he’s been fully healthy and he looks to be playing at a high level again. That’s the gamble Miami is making. If Chubb were 100% healthy and had 4 years like his rookie season, Miami wouldn’t be able to get him at all.

Looks like they're paying him as if he had 4 years like his rookie season. That's a big gamble and the results will be pretty significant for how good the team is over the next couple years.

I’ll wait and see how the numbers look until I pass judgement. Based off how Miami has done business the last few years, I would guess a lot of the guaranteed money is going to be front-loaded in the first two or three years, pre-Tua extension.

Also signing Chubb likely means how Miami is going to play defense moving forward under Josh Boyer is going to look different than what we saw under Brian Flores. It changed this year out of necessity due to the rash of injuries, but Chubb coming in likely means that Byron Jones will be leaving in the offseason. Miami will likely start blitzing less, which they’ve already done, and play more zone coverages, where you don’t need to have two high priced lockdown corners to execute.

That’s how they beat the Bills. Playing man coverage and blitzing Josh Allen is not a successful formula. Brian Flores had zero wins against Allen and the Bills. It’s mixing up zone coverages, sending occasional pressure, changing the look post snap, and keeping everything in front of you.

Chubb is an acknowledgment of that philosophy.

Here's how I'd rank the remaining games (hardest - easiest):

* = Divisional game

*Bills – Allen/McDermott/Road
49ers – Garoppolo/Shanahan/Road
Packers – Rodgers/LaFluer/Home
*Patriots – Jones/Belichick/Road
Chargers – Herbert/Staley/Road
Browns – Brissett/Stefansky/Home
*Jets – Wilson/Saleh/Home
Bears – Fields/Eberflus/Road
Texans – Mills/Smith/Home

I think Miami is more vulnerable vs. elite quarterbacks/head coaches and on the road. I almost swapped the Jets and Bears, but for me, the division game + Jets potentially being in playoff contention ultimately outweighed Miami being on the road.

Packers aren’t very good this year. Yes, Aaron Rodgers and Matt LaFleur are good, but we’ve seen the offense struggle tremendously as he just had no one that gets open.

Chargers aren’t playing exceptionally well either, but I won’t say any game against Herbert will be easy. They’re still dangerous and that game is on the road.

Browns and Patriots are a coin flip for me. Jacoby is a negative but the Browns are running the crap out of the ball. The talent doesn’t worry me with New England, but Bill can always come up with interesting ways to make life difficult for the QB.

Miami beats the Jets if Tua plays. Miami probably beats the Jets if Teddy Bridgewater doesn’t get a phantom concussion on the first play of the game.

i think u can win every game but @BUFF
I think if Tua stays healthy, you’re probably right. You can make the argument that if Tua played every game, Miami might be undefeated.

Hopefully Tua starts making a real effort to protect himself out there.

Quick-fire reaction:
  • Another strong performance, overall, by Tua, but he left some points out on the field. He's gotten better making throws on the move/off platform but still needs to get better. The missed throw to Smythe was a big one. Also, unsure as to why he tried to touch pass the deep strive to Waddle to ice the game. Drive it and it's a TD.
  • Chubb/Ogbah/Phillips/Wilkins/Seiler/Ingram/Baker/Howard/Hollins. Yes, the secondary is missing Byron/Brandon Jones, but this defense still has far too much talent to be this bad.At this point, I'd be surprised if Boyer wasn't replaced by someone currently employed by SF next season.
  • Always great to be able to make mistakes and learn from them while still getting wins. Got to beat the Browns. Head into the BYE 7-3 and fix some shit.
  • A special teams play! Finally!

I think the Jets and their run game/defensive combination continues to be underappreciated. I might flip the Jets with the Pats on my list.

Those two passes by Tua were glaring because those were put the game away passes. The Waddle one especially was a walk in TD. Tua put way too much air under that ball and the defender was able to get back and make a play. Be bold, put that ball out in front, and win the game on the road.

Defense was shredded by Fields on the ground. They had no answers for it. Fields is the exact type of QB Flores and Boyer have struggled to contain since forever. Fields is a heck of a talent. Hope all those carries and hits don’t add up too fast.

Chubb came within an eyelash of bagging a sack and Jeff Wilson looked good, and scored a TD in his debut.

Take the road win and with Buffalo losing, Miami now a half a game away from first place.

Yup. It'll take some shine off of Tua's performance (media), but he was still really, really good. Young QB are going to have their young QB moments.

He's really doing a great job of avoiding major contact. Right now, though, 1 out of every 3 or 5 passes beyond 10-12 yards seems to get away from him. If he can improve in that area -- which I think he will -- he's going to be tough to stop. The Bears have their guy.

"Chubb came within an eyelash of bagging a sack and Jeff Wilson looked good and scored a TD in his debut."

The Wilson addition is going to get a lot more attention/love as the season unfolds. He's so much better than Edmonds in this offense. I think we could see a 65/35 split his way eventually, due to his ability to also partake in the passing game.

"Take the road win and with Buffalo losing, Miami now a half a game away from first place."

Take it and run, baby! The AFC West being declared as the clear-cut best division in the conference was, perhaps, the biggest miss of the season. It's the East.

Wilson was very good. There was a cutback that he hit for a 28 yard run and I am 100% confident Edmonds runs into the guard and gets bottled up for a loss.

The throw to Waddle felt like to me, Tua was taking a layup. He saw Waddle and thought he’s either getting a completion to Waddle or the DB is going to have to run through Waddle and he gets a DPI. He broke out the wedge for a safe chip instead of trying to hit the green.

First place Miami Dolphins heading into the bye 7-3.

Miami running all over Cleveland felt like a “uh-oh, Happy learned how to putt” moment. Wilson has looked very good in his two weeks here and Mostert broke off a long run for a T

Tua looked excellent today. The TD pass to Sherfield was a dime, but his best throw of the day might have been a 5 yard out route to Waddle in third down that he placed absolutely perfectly between the zone defenders.

Armstead had himself a whale of a game. He blanked Myles Garrett and opened up some huge running lanes for Wilson and Mostert.

Defense looked good against the Browns. Outside of a long run for Chubb for the TD, they really kept the ground game in check and forced Jacoby to make plays.

Pass rush looked spooky at times. They were really getting after Jacoby with 4 guys.

Miami currently controls their own destiny and can go as far as the offense can take them.

Great breakdown here of the two minute drill that Tua ran to close out the half yesterday. Includes the ball to Waddle and the ball to Sherfield. High level, NFL-caliber throws from Tua, and they wound up double dipping to really pull away from the Browns.

This year, I've taken a step back from fantasy football (and football watching in general) and am only watching the Dolphins play. It has turned out to be a great decision with fantastic timing because this team's play is more than filling my "football cup." Yesterday, was another step in Tua's development -- taking what the defense was giving him (outside the hashes, underneath), while also eventually taking well-calculated shots down the field when the opportunities arose.

There's a handful of QB plays being highlighted by analysts in this one, but one that's being ignored (the first TD pass to Ingold following a Tua pump fake), demonstrated Tua's capability as an "off-script" playmaker. Tua's gotten to the point of playing so well that these types of plays are no longer "highlights" but rather the expectation.

Man, do I freakin' love Josh Wilson II. Extend that dude! He's the perfect RB for the offense and has helped push this Miami offense to another level.

Now, if only this defense can remain good enough. The solution may be in finding ways to get more turnovers. Of course, a Byron Jones return in time for Miami's West Coast trip wouldn't hurt, either.

Jeff Wilson is exactly why the CMC trade was so dumb. Miami got Wilson for peanuts and the delta between Wilson and Chase Edmonds has been absolutely massive. RBs are replaceable and trading away all that capital to pay him a top of the market contract is still nutty.

I said during the game to myself yesterday that I have no idea why Miami ever runs the ball on third and 1. They struggle to pick it up every time and have been stuffed multiple times on third and fourth and short. The passing game is so unstoppable and Waddle and Hill are so good at beating man coverage I would never run the ball and just spread it and let Tua make the read and rip it. Throw an RPO wrinkle in there if you want, but it feels like they run it at times to try and prove a point.

I watched a lot of the game yesterday and was very impressed with Wilson. Ran fast and hard with great vision. Dude seems like a real weapon - why did SF move on from him?

I think the Phins are going to the Super Bowl.

SF had McCaffrey and Eliza Mitchell coming back. So Wilson was expendable. But when he's healthy, he's truly awesome.

Exactly. He was going to be buried on the depth chart behind CMC and Mitchell. Credit to Grier and probably McDaniel for realizing this and making the call on deadline day.

Wilson looks like a guy that has spent his entire career running this system, because he obviously has. He knows where the lanes are and his hit a few cutback runs for big gains. Running hard and physical.

I might have posted this tweet before, but after two weeks, feels like it rings very true.

I'm surprised(?) I haven't seen it mentioned here or elsewhere, but it appears that Hill sexually harassed a female referee during his TD celebration in Sunday's game.

To be honest, I’m sure that female referees go through a lot in terms of trying to be known simply as a referee, but that seemed like some harmless fun from Tyreek to me.

Hill's celebration probably wasn't the best idea (unprofessional), but to categorize it as "unwelcome and inappropriate sexual remarks or physical advances" seems like a stretch, considering the lack of information. It also seemed pre-determined (teammates then performing CPR) and mild on the spectrum. (I'm willing to bet the NFL contacted Miami and Tyreek was "spoken to.") Regardless, it certainly isn't worth raining on this current sunny Miami season!

While the Dolphins are on a roll, I'm hopeful that this serves as a well-timed break for veterans nursing injuries (i.e., Armstead, Howard, etc.) ... and that following this period, we're gifted some good news on the (eventual) availability of Byron Jones. Perhaps in time for the WC road trip?

Regardless, it certainly isn't worth raining on this current sunny Miami season!

Byron Jones is such an odd situation. They thought he would be ready for the start of the season and it will be Week 12 if he returns for Houston.

How did we miss the mark by three entire months? This guy could have had an entirely separate ankle procedure since the start of training camp and fully recovered by now.

That might be the worst I’ll ever feel about a game where Miami was up 30-0, Tua three for nearly 300 yards in a half, and the Dolphins won.

The wheels fell off the offense the second Armstead left the game. Shell was getting smoked on every rep and Lovie Smith was sending all sorts of pressure at the left side. Smart coaching on his part. Miami didn’t seem to come up with an answer.

They correctly pulled Tua, maybe a series too late.

Defense was looking pretty good most of the game. They looked like they fell asleep a bit in the third quarter and nearly allowed the Texans to climb back in.

Looking forward, the gauntlet is upon us, starting with San Fran. I’m chalking that up as a loss immediately if Armstead can’t go. Miami finished the game with Greg Little and Shell at tackle. That isn’t cutting it against the Niners. With Armstead, I think they have a decent shot.

Realistically, I would be thrilled to go 2-1 in the next three games. The Buffalo game could decide the division, and potentially the #2 seed in the AFC.

Not a great effort from the offense. Tua clearly had some happy feet and didn’t feel as comfortable as when Armstead had been in there. He missed on a bunch of throws he has been routinely hitting.

Defense looked fine. Getting beat by Brock Purdy never feels good, but really they were beat by the running game and Shanahan’s ability to always stay out of third and long. Felt like the first drive, SF just ran CMC on an option route every play until Miami took Duke Riley off of him.

Miami didn’t lose because of the officials, but it also felt like they were on the wrong end of some very ticky tack calls that extended drives for the 9ers or called back a long run from Mostert.

I mean, this game was never in must-win territory--unless you thought they had a realistic chance at home-field--but for a while there, it was there for the taking. Very weird to see Tua just completely lose his touch for long stretches. That said, I feel like he gets a Mulligan on this one. Next week will be huge. Would have been huger had the Chargers won today, but the Dolphins are a conference loss or two away from being on the outside looking in.
