I CAN NOT wait for this season to start. There is very very little to watch on Saturdays in the summer.

Will the SEC reign supreme once again this season?

Someone voted Texas number one in the USA Today preseason poll. Magnificent troll job.

Alabama is going to play "name your score" in Austin. Sark is doing an absolutely masterful recruiting job right now, but I have so little faith in his on-field coaching abilities. Maybe Bijan can run away with the Heisman to make it an interesting year.

If Texas wins 7 games I’ll be a bit surprised and happy. I expect more suckage

Steve Worster, the first feature back in Darrel Royal's wishbone offense, a two-time All-American, and a member of the '69 and '70 Texas national championship teams, died. He was only 73.

I think Boise State is going to bounce back comfortably after a shocking 7-5 season. 14th year QB Hank Bachmeier and a mostly returning O-Line (who underperformed last season) will overcome the loss of Khalil Shakir to the Bills.
Look for safety JL Skinner to solidify his position as a day one draft pick. His partner in crime, Tyreque Jones will prove worthy of a draft pick, as well.

Sources: The presidents and chancellors who make up the College Football Playoff’s Board of Managers held a brief discussion on Monday about major college football operating under a governance structure outside of the NCAA. More details here:
The most logical place for the sport to be run outside of the NCAA would be under the auspices of the CFP, which was discussed on the call. The CFP currently oversees the sport's postseason playoff and has contractual ties to other marquee postseason bowl games.
Sources cautioned that these discussions are in such early stages that it could be considered the first steps of a complicated process that would resemble a marathon. The sources added that the group spoke about the idea for only about five minutes, as it was raised as something the group should think more about down the line.

Big Ten just signed a 7-year, $7 billion media rights deal with Fox/CBS/NBC. For CFB, Fox will have a game at Noon, CBS starting in '24 will have a 3:30 game, and NBC will have a 7:30 or 8 pm game. Other games will be on FS1, BTN, and Peacock. There's escalators in the deal that make it worth up to $10 billion so that indicates they may not be done expanding.

Bama and Ohio St are gonna be double-digit faves in all their games this year. Stoked for Cincy @ Arkansas, should be a fun game.

Quick and simple math: each year will pay $1 billion to the conference, which is projected to have 16 teams. If the money is split equally, that's about $60 million to each school per year from this TV deal alone.

Will this cause a sea-change in the funding of athletics? Well, an article written in Feb, 2021 states that the Ohio State athletics department had an income of around $230 million in 2020; a more recent article notes that, due to the pandemic, the OSU athletics department brought in only $107 million last year. By itself, then, inserting $60 million to the coffers will certainly help the system at OSU, but doesn't look like a game-changer to me. Perhaps the guaranteed nature of the money over a 7-year timeframe might be an important factor.

The College Football Playoff's board of managers voted Friday to expand the CFP to 12 teams in 2026, but is encouraging the sport's commissioners to try to implement it as soon as 2024, multiple sources told ESPN.

The 11 presidents and chancellors comprising the board approved the original 12-team model, which includes the six highest-ranked conference champions and six at-large teams, as determined by the CFP selection committee. The 10 FBS commissioners and Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick will meet next week in Dallas to figure out the details.

Not sure how I feel about 12, although I'm certainly going to watch. I do think moving to "six highest ranked" and away from P5/G5 is very good.

Yea not a fan of 12 at all. 5 & 6 barely have a right for the title, but now 7-12? No thanks. Of course I'll watch but it'll be blowout city baby.

The top 4 seeds get byes so that should eliminate some blow outs.

To make this truly work they need to kill the bowl games and have the non title games played on campus. We can't have the Wendy's Chili Bowl hosting the first round in Indianapolis.

12 with the conference championships seems like too many. I always wanted 8.
Last years would have been:

12 Pitt (11-2) vs 5 Notre Dame (11-1)
11 Utah (10-3) vs 6 OhioSt (10-2)
10 MichSt (10-2) vs 7 Baylor (10-2)
9 OK State (11-2) vs 8 OleMiss (10-2)

which I guess is fine but we don’t really need them. And 12>4.

Nope, me either. But yes, I'll 100% watch.

How many blowouts have there been with the 1-4, 2-3 format; as stated, the top 4 get byes, so it might not be that bad, but still, 1-8, 2-7, 3-6, 4-5 won't be much better.

The only good thing about this is teams no longer have to worry about losing a game in season and then that's that, they are done.

You guys are crazy. 12 is the perfect number of playoff teams, if for no other reason than we get no fewer than eight additional meaningful games at the end of the season involving very good teams in which very few NFL-bound players will sit on the sidelines, and everyone will really be trying to win. And the importance of the regular season - and trying to get the first-round bye - is still very much preserved. Who cares if half the teams have virtually no chance of winning the title? If bowls still mattered, I might think differently...but they very clearly do not.

(And that's to say nothing about moving the debate about "Who is the first team left out?" to a point where it really shouldn't matter. There have definitely been years where the #5 team might have been competitive and has had a realistic grievance at being excluded; if you're #13, absolutely nobody is going to weep for you.)

I would have gone with 7, top seed getting a bye.
New B1G winner a spot
SEC 3 spots
3 at large among ACC winner, small/new PAC-10, small/new Big 8, highest ranking small conference school, 2nd B1G, 4th SEC.

If the expansion stops more or less now, you'd have these 6:

SEC
Big 10
Big 12
ACC
Pac 12
One from AAC, SBC, CUSA, MWC, MAC,

If they take 2 more from the SEC and Big 10, then the controversies will center around the 4th place teams in those leagues versus the runner ups in the ACC/B12/P12. You'd have to have two 13-0 teams from the lower leagues to get another bid from them, and that very rarely happens.

I've always thought 16 was the perfect playoff. All conference champs get in with I believe 6 at-larges. You play one less non-conference game of the year so that the regular season ends with the conference title games on Thanksgiving weekend. First round games and quarterfinals are the first two weekends of December on campus sites. First round losers have the option of going to a bowl game. Break for exams/Christmas. Semis on New Year's Day at two of the bowls. Championship game the Monday after the NFL regular season is over.

I know the AAC just got gutted, but their champ has been ranked higher than the Pac 12's going into the bowls in three of the last four seasons.

It's going to be interesting seeing the next 2-3 years how the conferences rank given all the changes (some of which are yet to come).

Am I the only one that isn’t in love with the 12 team format? I like expansion of the playoffs but 6 automatic bids for conference champions? 6?! With expansion every conference not named BIG TEN and SEC
will be second rate. I say just 4 automatic berths for conference champions - all first round byes.

If the ACC stays together then okay give them a berth and if the PAC stays together and doesn’t become a total joke then give them a berth but that is unlikely

I personally liked 8 teams. Thought it was a perfect balance. But 12 I can deal with - I just think the conference situation has to be dealt with first.

One thing is for certain: Clemson and FSU should be in the SEC and everyone with a brain knows Notre Dame should be in the Big Ten but (despite a good showing on Saturday night) they’re scared to death of the Big Ten - in most years they’d get boat raced by the Ohio State, USC, Michigan and hell even Penn State sometimes.

Hearing that GTech is buying out Geoff Collins for something in the neighborhood of $10m. These buyout numbers are silly money.

I can understand it at a school like Nebraska that has the Big Ten money cannon. Not sure if Georgia Tech has some well-motivated and well-funded boosters who wrote a check just to be done with him. Nevertheless, Andy Staples wrote a good article right before FSU paid Taggert a huge buyout about the costs of fan apathy if he were to be retained, so I may be way off on the math that goes into these sorts of things.

But at least they get to watch a modern offense! Paul Johnson averaging 7+ wins a season was just intolerable.
Amazing that Geoff Collins has used the triple option as a built-in excuse meanwhile Georgia Southern moved on from the Paul Johnson tree and immediately implemented an effective modern passing offense.

So, just so I'm clear:

--App St beats Texas A&M on the road
--App St loses at home to JMU
--JMU beats MTSU by 37 points
--MTSU beats Miami on the road

Boise State, after their worst offensive display (and increasing frequency of crap performaces) in my 40 years as fan, fires Offensive Coordinator, Tim Plough. Dirk Koetter, who was with the team as a consultant (and is former HC AND son plays there), takes over.
Today, 4 year starting quarterback, Hank Bachmeier, enters the transfer portal - with 2 years to play.

Cue Taylen Green, the rebuild starts now!

That was pretty much expected by halftime on Saturday. Now the real challenge for Auburn is determining how not to screw up the process so thoroughly this time around.
