...and it's hockey season. Captain's practice is underway. Rookies report this week and will play in the prospects challenge in Buffalo this weekend. Full camp opens next week.

State of the Bruins

Zacha - Bergeron - DeBrusk
Hall - Krejci - Pastrnak
Frederic - Coyle - Smith
Foligno - Nosek - Steen
Studnicka, McLaughlin, Greer, Wagner

The top 6 seems to be somewhat set to open the year with Marchand out. Maybe they move Zacha around a little bit but this was what Monty said he has in mind. The bottom 6 could be thrown into more of a blender. Coyle is probably entrenched as 3C, Smith as 3RW. I wonder if they give Foligno first dibs on the left. He seemed unhappy with his 4th line usage last year, wonder if Monty defers a bit and at least gives him a shot. As for the rest, I think it's going to be an uphill climb for McLaughlin, Greer and Wagner to make the team. Wagner specifically probably needs to go down for cap purposes. Studnicka and Steen have lost their waiver exemption so from an asset management standpoint they probably have a leg up on the other group.

I think that covers the forwards. I'm sure Lysell will be given an opportunity, but barring further injury, it's hard to see where he'd fit. He isn't displacing Pastrnak or DeBrusk on the top 2 lines, and I don't think they'd use him on the 4th line. That leaves Smith's spot. From a roster management standpoint, if Lysell beats out Smith, what do you do with Smith? He's probably tradeable but removing him takes away the security blanket for Lysell. So I think they'll probably be conservative and send Lysell down unless he absolutely blows doors.

Defense

Lindholm - Carlo
Forbort- Clifton
Reilly - Zboril
Ahcan - Carrick

The D is really thin, and frightening, with Grzelyck and McAvoy out. I think these 8 will be the players who make the team, it'll just be a matter of who fits in where. Zboril was starting to emerge before blowing his knee out early last season. Ahcan has looked good in limited, sheltered minutes. Carrick is an AAAA type with NHL experience.

Goales

Ullmark
Swayman
Kinkaid
Keyser
Bussi

I don't think there's much of a battle here, we'll probably get a 50/50 split unless one of them gets white hot and steals the net.

I have spent the last like 20 minutes scouring the webs seeing how soon training camp started seeing that there were no posts in this forum since last Wednesday, so thanks for this as always. While not a prospect hawk like some here, I'm trying to look at these injuries in the half full sense. I think the team has enough to stay afloat at the start, making the playoffs is the main goal. I hope the team gives some young guys run at the start to fill those spots of the injured guys. I'm hoping this new coaching staff has more patience with younger players. Then again, I don't think it can be any worse than before in that regard.

Probably better for a different thread - but what’s the consensus prognostication for the B’s- a Pats 35% win team, a Sox 50% team, or a Celts 65% team ? I know the answer lies somewhere in the middle….

Thanks. And thanks for all of your contributions and info throughout the seasons. It’s really clutch for people like me that love hockey, and the Bruins, but hate Twitter.

I know I'm just a dirty lurker, but I loathe Twitter and also appreciate cshea's posts here, I've played for 35+ years to include Junior B and I still learn stuff in here. Much appreciated

Thanks all. I'll keep the updates flowing, then.

Another piece of good news yesterday was Grzelyck skaing on his own with the training staff. They said 5 month recovery period from his surgery which took place in early June. That puts November as his return date, but I wonder if he's a little ahead. We'll find out next week.

I think this is a tricky one to answer. On paper they are improved. They were good last season, especially at the end, and they are returning the same roster plus Krejci. Zacha for Haula is the only other change and a neutral swap is probably worst case for the Bruins. On the flip side, they are projected to be without McAvoy and Marchand for up to 2 months which will be a challenge. I think there's a wide gap between the good and the bad in the division, but some of the bad teams are improved (Ottawa, Detroit, Buffalo maybe) so they may not be able to dominate those teams like they used to. We're also leaning heavily on 37 and 35 year old centers so how they perform and hold up will dictate how the year will go. Finally, new coach. It is always a mystery on how that will play out. So far the reports are good on Montgomery but we won't really know until they start playing games.

I know I'm a perpetual optimist but I keep coming back to the fact that they were playing pretty well overall the last 10 games or so and matched up very well with anyone in the east aside from Carolina (and maybe Toronto, but Leafs, playoffs, etc). I like the additions, and while everyone is a year older and the injuries at the beginning of the year are going to make it challenging not to dig an early season hole, I think there's a decent chance this team can play with anyone in the east come playoffs.

This forum and cshea are the best! Also the many other posters that add to the content also! But as others have noted, cshea drives the posting and it’s invaluable to have someone who can provide both quality and enough quantity to keep people thinking and posting.

Excited for this season!

He said he's been in Boston for about 3-weeks now. The team hasn't given him any indication of where he'll play this season.
What do we think the odds Lysell sticks straight out of camp are? Might be a good time to try it with Marchand out (and a need to replace some scoring) and push another forward stiff off the depth chart.

Personally barring a trade or him absolutely dominating in camp I think he'll start in Prov. There's no room in the top 6, and putting him on the 4th line does nothing (IMO) so they'd need to find room on that 3rd line. Smith being traded is the best route for him to break as a 3rd line wing IMO. BUT i'm sure someone might have seen or know something I haven't or aren't tracking.

After watching him in the tournament I noticed he dominated the lesser competition but tended to disappear a bit vs the better teams, obviously an insane SSS, but might be something the Bruins saw as well and think some time in the AHL might benefit his growth

It depends how they deploy the 4th line this year. Traditionally it’s been a meat and potatoes line but they could use it as a way to break younger guys in. Not sure I’ve heard anything from Montgomery one way or another.

I sure hope that Montgomery's goal is to use the 4th line on younger guys, I think developing younger players in the league in protected minutes is a far better use than grinders that are becoming more and more obsolete. However, it probably wouldn't happen this season due current players on contracts, and worse Management seems to still think those kind of players are still useful.

edit: Yes, grinders still have a place in the game, but its rapidly shrinking and not worth the cap space the Bruins like to give out to those types

If you shelter or protect the 4th line, it means the other lines have to play harder minutes. So there's a give and take. With Cassidy, the 4th line did not play much but they almost always did so against very tough competition. They would get the D zone draws against the other teams top lines. Poor Kuraly would go an entire season with less than 10% o zone starts under Butch. The benefit to the team with this deployment was that as long as they didn't get totally caved in on the scoreboard, which they usually didn't, Bergeron and Krejci would go out in more favorable offensive situations against weaker competition. If you move to a younger 4th line and use it developmentally, then you have to give those harder minutes to Bergeron and Krejci which may not be ideal either.

Montgomery's stated approach of quality shots over quantity would seem to be fundamentally at odds with Craig Smith's approach. I dont hate the guy, (and, in fact, I always *liked* the fact that he could counted on to shoot ) but, since I'm not the coach, it seems like his spot -- 3rd line scoring -- is the best place to put a rookie whose offense may be ahead of his defense. What are the obstacles to moving him/moving on from him?

I think roster depth for the Bruins. We've spent years railing against the Bruins lack of depth. If you remove Smith, you're removing depth and putting a larger burden on a young player.

I think they'll play it out. There's no reason to rush anyone in.

Pasta arrived today.

He did say he wants to stay in Boston and confirmed there have been talks, but I got the sense it wasn't a priority for him during the offseason. It sounds like he just wanted to get the fuck away for the summer, which is totally understandable. He mentioned how he hadn't had a normal summer for 3-years and that he and his girlfriend needed time for themselves.

He also said playing the World Championships with Krejci brought him some joy back to hockey. Obviously last year was a nightmare for him off the ice. He seems to be in a good place.

Per today's e-Globe a Big Z sighting:

Agent Matt Keator said there was nothing to report when Chara was spotted by the Globe at Warrior Ice Arena this week. He was leaving the building with a bag, marked by a Pine Street Inn logo, that held black and gold objects that looked like kids’ hockey gloves. He popped into the New Balance store on that Brighton block, smiled and said a few cheery words to a photographer, and left in his Mercedes-Benz sedan.

I mean that's a great shot, but the defenseman on that play basically did everything wrong. Didn't challenge him at blue line, gave him tons of space and backed into his goalie basically. He's not going to get that often at the NHL level. Pretty much everyone can score in that situation.
I wouldn’t go that far. He’s defending against the pass into the slot for which his partner is a step or two behind. He’s also conscious of not fucking up his goalie’s view of the worse-angle (preferred from his vantage) shot. He’s slightly in no-man’s land but I see his thinking and I would agree it’s a legit snipe.

It's a great shot, like a legit NHL shot, but no the defenseman didn't play that well at all. I understand him trying to play the pass but he did that wrong as well, and still needed to challenge at the blue line (which he didn't) then not only didn't clog the passing lane he also backed into his goalie allowing that shot to occur unimpeded. I'm giving this view as a defenseman who played up to juniors (where my dream died hahaha) the strong side defenseman needed to challenge him at the line to force the pass early or force him further outside. He did neither. He then backed to far in allowing him to take an unimpeded high % shot. It's terrible anyway you look at it. NONE of that takes away from the shot or how Lysell did, that's a NHL quality snipe and a great job by the kid.

Looks like white was caught off guard, maybe by a change of possession outside the blue line? Didn’t see the play but that would explain the D-Man giving him so much space. He also could be respecting Lysell’s speed. I played D through college (D-2) and continue in men’s league so I’m not a greenhorn, here, though obviously never played juniors.

I’d kinda like to see the whole play because the D-Man was already pretty deep in his own zone, which makes me think he was following his team’s possession up ice then had to scramble with no ability to anticipate the flow of the play.

I watched the stream and that's more where I'm coming from on the play. I've been trying to find a copy of the entire "game" somewhere to slow it down and watch it closer to see if I did miss something on the weak side which determined more of his poor decision making that I may have missed, but haven't had any luck. If anyone smarter than me or better at searching can help I'd love to be able to watch it again so I can maybe break it down better.

Either way Lysell looked really good and that's exciting

Agreed, I’ve seen a few clips of him and he looks like he might have the finishing skills this team could definitely use more of outside of the top line.

Final rookie game underway. They dropped one 5-4 to Pittsburgh on Saturday. Little bit of a shakeup to put guys in different positions.

Toporowski - Poitras - Lysell
Lauko - Beecher - Merkulov
Greenway - Hall - Humphrey
Hardie - Jeri-Leon - Abate

Callahan - Mast
Edward - Berglund
Brunet - Wissmann

Bussi

It sounds like Beecher has been impressive so far. He has a goal in each, plus at least 1 assist.

Stralman's been skating with Lindholm since he arrived. Not sure what he has left to give. His numbers in Arizona were ugly but Cale Makar would also have really bad numbers playing for Arizona. Tough to parse out. Stralman's pressence does let them dress 3 right handed RHD as opposed to kicking a lefty over to the right sde. Zboril had been doing that early in camp but he's been back at LHD and paried with Carlo today.

The top 9 are skating together at practice today, though in different sessions:

Zacha - Bergeron - DeBrusk
Hall - Krejci - Pastrnak
Frederic - Coyle - Smith

4th line is anyone's guess. They were all over the place today.
