2022 49ers -- Purdy..... Purdy..... Purdy Good

I was at the game - it was definitely from the easy wins the 49ers have been having. The offense wasn't great, and for the first time in a minute, it seems like some of that blame should be put on Shanahan. But to be fair, some was just great defense by the Cowboys.
Purdy didn't wow yesterday, and I probably missed a lot seeing the game live versus on TV, but after going to several 49ers games over the last 5 or so years, I can say that Purdy made some plays yesterday that I don't think Jimmy G would have (not sure about Trey). That pass to Kittle on like his 5th read really stands out. That was super impressive for a rookie. He also made a really nice run 3rd and 10 to get like 6 yards and burn more time and make the FG a bit easier late in the 4th quarter.
Overall this gamemade me even more nervous than I thought it would.
The Cowboys defense was good to excellent, as opposed to other defenses they have faced. Purdy showed that, while he is a good QB, there is a reason he was drafted so late (forgetting the whole Mr Irrelevant thing). Dan Quinn had his defense ready for him.
That being said, there was a lot to like about him. He did not throw unnecessary interceptions (of course Diggs dropped a key one), and when he was sacked the defense was really fast in getting to him. He actually got to get rid of the ball many times.
The defense did show up, and while Pollard's injury was a factor, I think the defense manned up big time. That muff by McCloud to start the 2nd half could have really hurt, holding them to FG was big. Two key turnovers too. It was a hard fough duel and it was tense until the end.
On to Philadelphia.

The thing about Purdy is that he keeps passing tests. He wasn’t great last night but he wasn’t bad either. And a bad game probably dooms his team. The Cowboys completely neutralized CMAC and he still did what he needed to do.
Next game will be the ultimate test for him though. He’ll be on the road against a team with a ferocious pass rush and he’ll likely need to put up 20+ points to win. Purdy will have to make some plays.

Purdy seems to be living a charmed life in that the defenses he plays drop many would-be-easy-INT’s. I think opinions of him would be quite different if those had gone the other way.
To fair at least some of those have been tipped, making the INT much harder to bring in
There are plenty of "ifs" in any football game. Ward dropped an INT last year that would have sent the Niners to the Superbowl.
IMO, what Purdy showed yesterday was a lot of poise and he made enough plays while not making any killer mistakes. Either INT would have hurt them and changed the narrative, yes but they were not errant throws. And again, CMC was basicaññy removed from this game, so was Deebo, and yet the 9ers found a way.

I mean the one Diggs dropped was a tipped pass. I Dak threw a gimmie pick 6 that got dropped by Greenlaw.
He is very poised and he’s also very good at avoiding big hits, even on the rare occasions when he does get pressured. He’s also getting very fortunate. Even if we put aside the Diggs play, he easily could have cost SF three points at the end of the half by holding the ball too long. If that ball isn’t caught on the sideline by the coach/trainer does an extra second tick off? The big throw to Kittle also could have gone differently without the fortuitous bounce off Kittle’s helmet into his hands. He’s been both good and a bit lucky, which is perfectly fine. Eventually he will face more adversity during this run.

Early indications from media reports are that he pushed his GF down and that charges are possible but unlikely, which leaves it I think in a grey area for the league.
Personally, I'd like to see Shanahan sit him out even if it's the NFC Championship game, despite what the league says. Drake Jackson can play instead. Jed York talks about winning with class, here's his chance to prove it.
Year after year, decade after decade.......... and we still can't get it through the heads of an alarming number of these shit brains to not put their hands on a women in anger, or in an unwanted sexual advance. It seems utterly fucking hopeless at times. Bench his ass until this is adjudicated.
Not to make light of this, but Shanahan's statement "We don’t feel we should kick him off our team at this time" didn't sound very final four coach-like.
I don’t know why the NFL statement needs to include the “no change in his status” part. The policy addresses all of that. It just comes off as defensive and, if I was the victim or in her corner, as dismissive.

So I think the answer is Purdy starts (if healthy), but let Lance have a shot to win the job.

I think this team is built to get back to another SB (if healthy) in the next two or three seasons if they get the QB right.
I hate losing to the Eagles. Hated it when they beat the Pats in the Super Bowl, and I hated it when they won today.
Does today make it more or less likely that they go get Brady for a year? They’d still have the young guys under contract (although with Lance in his third year it gets tricky). Windows shut so fast in the NFL. You don’t really want to squander one.
I do think there's a chance Purdy just went on a magical run and won't be anywhere near as effective next year. The 49ers have a top 3 roster in football, to count on Purdy or a complete unknown in Lance to lead them to a title seems a little tricky to me. If Brady wants in for one year, I'd do it if I were them, but committing to two might be too much.
Fangio was the DC during the Harbaugh years, and the Niners had the best defense in the league then too. Sign me up.

I don’t know why Brady wouldn’t take a very modest deal if his heart is set on SF. He’s not setting the market anymore (if he ever was) so I don’t think he really needs to worry about the NFLPA. He’s basically one of one when it comes to precedent. Another deep run is worth way more than the dollars (which he obviously does not need). Just take peanuts and roll with a superteam. Maybe that will satisfy whatever craving he has left and he can retire in peace.
That aside, and let's see if he does take an offer like that, or if one is made at all, does Brady really fit on on Shanahan's offense. From what I can see the offense is not made for Brady's style, but I could be wrong (after all he built an offense for Jimmy G).
But the point is I think Brady has to tell the 49ers he wants it (I mean not directly but there are ways). I don't think they have the cap room to outbid other teams for his services. And my guess is there will be offers.
Great division to get into now, too.
Seattle is pretty good, especially because they are young, but Geno isn't Josh Allen or Joe Burrow. The Rams are going to have a rebuilding year next year, I would guess. Arizona is an absolute tire fire. The division isn't as bad as Tampa's division but it's not great, either.
I though about that while I was typing, but that was years ago, and he has a whole system in SF where he would plug in a new QB. The offense will come back intact next year (there will be changes to the OL but the weapons will come back).
I imagine Shanahan is smart enough to incorporate the greatest QB of all time into his system. If Brady doesn’t come here, I’m hoping he goes to the Niners. It’d probably be his best chance to win, and returning to his hometown to ride off into the $350 million sunset has a nice narrative arc that hopefully even he can find fulfilling.

The Fangio stuff is interesting. The fact that Miami is not official suggests pretty strongly that he prefers SF, but they need Ryans’ situation to get sorted first.
Wait, Fangio might not go to the dolphins? OMG i can't wait to see the dolphins fains explain that he wasn't the right choice anyway and they're much happier to be going with the pride of the Texas State University Fighting Armadillo's defensive coordinator Wally Rigendorf instead.
Haven’t seen too many replays, but that’s one of the strangest injuries I’ve seen. Looked like a bruise or a nerve issue. Did the contact with the elbow affect the throwing motion enough to cause a tear or could the contact itself do that?
Complete UCL tear. One opinion is best case is Tommy John surgery. Worst case, can't find but he might not be ready for 2023.
The ligament likely ruptured when the D Lineman's left forearm came down hard and struck Purdy's right forearm forcing it backward as Purdy's arm was accelerating forward. From this video, there does not appear to be any direct contact with the elbow initially, but if you follow the video to the end it looks like Purdy's elbow does contact the D Lineman's helmet. However, that seems to be more of a glancing blow.

Live it looked like a keylock/americana submission which can put pressure on the elbow (technically a shoulder lock but guys' elbows sometimes pop first). Guys are normally fine about 6 weeks after.

It isn't hard to imagine an elbow injury when he is loaded up throwing and stopped. Really surprising, to me, more qbs don't get arm injuries. It is like he was throwing a 1lb football and it magically transformed into a 250lb ball. I guess a broken arm probably would have been better in terms of recovery time.

It's amazing that he came back to play at all.
I hope he can compete in training camp and/or pre season 2023. TJ surgery is more than a year for pitchers but maybe it is less in case of a QB (as it has been for position players).

Another little reminder of how lucky we were with Brady. One injury that kept him out of games over 19 seasons – and that occurred 7 years into his career.
It's getting a little ridiculous in San Fran. If they sign Brady, they'll have three above average to very good QB on their roster and then the 3rd pick in the draft from 2 years ago. They should not sign Brady without trading 2 of them for good returns.
I think you mean trading one, not two, right? IF Brady signs, it would be him, Lance, and Purdy under contract. Jimmy is an UFA. I don't think it makes financial sense to trade Lance and unless a team was willing to get silly for Purdy, I'd probably just carry all three.
If Brady doesn't sign, which I think is unlikely unless he really wants to play for the 49ers way more than he lets on, I think the job is Lance's at this point. They just have too many other commitments to give Brady close to the money likely available elsewhere. Lance will have more of the off-season to run the offense and his tools are just better than Purdy's. However, he wouldn't get a ton of leeway to play poorly in the regular season is my guess.
It really will be interesting to see how this all plays out. Do the Niners have to commit to Brady for more than one season? If not would maybe they keep all three given the nature of Purdy's injury? Do they deal Lance and how does that look given his contract? Fascinating stuff.

Also gives the Niners a chance to correct what many thought was a mistake by not going after him the last time he was available. Decent chance they win a SB with him last 3 years.
