There's a good interaction between them on the latest Behind the B after the "shoot out" compeitition where they win so they get the apple and not the lemon. Ullmark takes a big bite then offers it to Sway... and sway looks askance at it until Ullmark chides him into taking a bite. It's a very big brother/little brother relationship vibe

Burned . . . Blacklisted
Was looking to see the next game I could try to get to, and didn’t realize the tough run coming up.

I knew they had played a pretty unbalanced schedule with a good number of home games, but from the 27th to Feb 1, they have 18 games, with 12 on the road, including 3 in a row and 5 in a row leading up to the longer Feb break.
12-3-3 in this stretch, with that 2-2-1 stretch on that final 5 game silly trip.

27 of 36 pts is still good, though the PP doldrum is hopefully resolved after the break.

Some Pastrnak / Bruins chatter from Kaplan at ESPN:

https://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/35600120/latest-dylan-larkin-david-pastrnak-more-nhl-buzz

On the David Pastrnak contract talks, I've been told the Bruins and their star winger are "financially very close." Though Pastrnak admitted during All-Star weekend that there is no rush and he is focusing on hockey, this is tracking to get done this season, after some progress the past few weeks. It sounds like Pastrnak will get paid on level with the top stars in the league, and for more money than Boston's front office was originally budgeting.
...it sounds like the Bruins have been very hesitant to give up a first-round pick or too many assets for rental players at this year's deadline. They've been burned before, and need to build back up their prospect pool. The Bruins are looking to make depth additions for the playoff push, but ideally would pick up a player who fits into their long-term plans as well.

Given how much of DeBrusk’s performance seems tied to his confidence and relaxation, they should err on the side of getting him 100% rather than rushing him back. Plenty of cushion and depth, thanks to, you know, the whole historic start thing.

We'll see if Smith hits the waiver wire in an hour. I think they can get compliant by demoting Lauko, LTIRing Lettieri and waiving/demoting Smith.
I don’t understand why the Capitals/Penguins/Panthers wouldn’t add Smith as a 4th liner for a 7th round pick. He’s (way) overpaid, but it’s the last year of his deal and he seems like a 2 way player that can follow coaching. They all have random 4th liners that seem similar and/or worse than Smith.

I didn’t look at the western conference but assume there must be a bubble team or 2 in a similar situation. I don’t think Smith is at all appealing but just surprised that the league-wide opinion of him is so low that he’s not even an upgrade over some of these 20 point 4th line players.

For that fact, the Preds looked like a team that could use him last night.

So, like, we're on pace for >62 wins; 55+ seems like a certainty as they would just need to win half of their remaining games. Where do we think they end up?

I think they fall just short at 60.

No matter how I look at it (% of remaining games won, gaming out remaining schedule, simulating based on GS/GA with variance), I end up with 57 as the minimum and 64 as the max. I think they're getting to 62.

The stretch from March 9th to April 2nd is 15 games in 25 days, with four back-to-backs. And those B2Bs are against either playoff teams or current wildcard hopefuls:
  • a home-and-home with Detroit (2 points out of East WC2 currently)
  • Minnesota (West WC2) and Buffalo (2 points behind Detroit)
  • Tampa and Carolina
  • Pittsburgh (East WC1) and St. Louis (6 points behind MIN)
They're a stupendously good team, but I expect quite a few losses during that stretch. Especially if they're doing some load management. (Which they should do.) I'd love to be proven wrong but I think it's wise to temper expectations here because the back half of the season is always brutal.

I'm wondering if the league would be better off to make cap less convoluted so it's easier to understand for fans. It's crazy to me that, in a space like SOSH, a person like you and some of the other posters here can't figure it out it. I understand the reasons behind how they do it, but if even the smartest fans can't figure it out, I can't see how it only hurts the product, even if minimally.

Between here and everywhere.
Listening to the Poke the Bear podcast, and they bring up how Sweeney the trader has been pretty much elite lately.

Zacha for Haula
Lindholm for Moore, Vaak, a 1st and 2 2nds
Hall (salary retained) and Lazar for Bjork and a 2nd…

I don’t know what the plan is for this deadline, but I have a surprising amount of confidence in Donny to do the right thing at the right price.

Does Frederic's recent play at center give them any leeway to move Nosek as part of whatever package they may have to assemble?.

Nosek is such a valuable fourth line center that I don’t think so. He leads the Bruins (and is 10th in the league) in percentage of shift starts in the defensive zone at 23.9%. He leads Bruins forwards on PK TOI and his faceoff win percentage is 58.3. He’s not going to generate much offense at all but they’ve got 11 other forwards to do that.

I agree that Nosek has been sneaky excellent and that they are a better team with both.

Will be interesting to see what Bjorkstrand gets for trying to snap Marchand's leg off. Should be just a few more minutes before his penalty is made public...

Hall going on LTIR might not be the worst thing. He hasn’t been great lately, the rest may do him well in getting ready for a long playoff run. Getting Foligno some time off can’t hurt either.

Looking at the next few weeks:

Marchand/Bergeron/DeBrusk
Zacha/Krejci/Pasta
Bertuzzi/Coyle/Nosek
Greer/Frederic/Hathaway

I’d swap Frederic and Nosek, just because I think he’s best in that limited 4th line/2nd PK C role, plus Frederic has earned middle 6 time this season.

I mean, imagine how Coyle would feel with Bertuzzi and Trent forechecking like madmen.

So besides *maybe* sending out some spare parts in salary, this is the team now, right?

They'll have legitimate pieces not dressing in the playoffs / ready to go if there's injuries

This team is unbelievably stacked now. Wow. Hoping Hall and Foligno are healthy in the playoffs. If so:

Marchand-Bergeron-Debrusk
Zacha-Krejci-Pasta
Hall-Coyle-Bertuzzi
Foligno-Frederic-Hathaway
Nosek

Orlov-McAvoy
Lindholm-Carlo
Gryz-Clifton
Reilly

Last regular season game is 6 weeks from today. Anything non surgical would probably be a 6 to 8 week injury I would think.

While it wasn't supposed to be this way, Bertuzzi and Hathaway replacing an injured Hall and Foligno is probably a hypothetical we'd all have been good with 2 weeks ago.

The problem is we have no way of knowing how much of this talk is LTIR maneuvering and how much Hall/Foligno are seriously injured that they’ll miss the postseason.

It seems more likely than not to be cap shenanigans to me. Foligno left Calgary without crutches or a boot and wasn't Hall's injury described as "nothing serious" (or something to that effect) by Montgomery when Hall left to return to Boston. Now they're both possibly out for the rest of the regular season and playoffs? Hmmmmm...
