Do they play both courses or just the North? Last time I played there they had reconfigured the North (which used to be inferior to the South Course) for competition (side note: we played a couple of weeks before the Farmers Open and that's where I learned that PGA-regulation rough is nothing to mess with--if you didn't get your drive on the fairway, your caddy wasn't finding your ball).

I played a couple weeks after the Farmers and got the same welcome from the rough. It was the hardest/longest rough I've ever played. You'd see where your ball went and then good luck finding it, even if you were standing right next to it. I flushed a hybrid out of the rough on #6 and it went maybe 50 yards. Accuracy and length off the tee is going to be critical this week.

The Tour rough for the Farmer's will look like a putting surface compared to what the USGA will do to it

Apparently the USGA approached Bryson about playing with Brooks on Thursday/Friday but Bryson declined.
I am 100% convinced that Bryson's "this doesn't really matter at all too me" comments over the last few weeks are total bullshit and he is actually deeply deeply irked by Koepka in a way Koepka probably isn't. His comments on the matter just scream insecurity.

Good. The USGA probably was thinking it might be a small ratings bump or something to advertise but these guys seem to really not like being around each other. Trying to manufacture TMZ style drama isn't something the USGA should be doing intentionally.

Bryson as reigning champ plays with the most recent US Amateur champ the first two rounds. Yo make that poor kid play with Koepka and Bryson might scar him for life.

I think this is where I come down. I enjoy the silly back and forth they are having. It is different and breaks up the day to day monotony of following the PGA Tour. I'm just not sure shoehorning it into a major championship is the right place for it. It'll be fantastic if it happens during the weekend and both are in contention.

The Ryder Cup with both of them should be very interesting.

IME, most show-off braggart types are all insecure at their core. I don't care for the guy, honestly.

It really is amazing how much of a machine Brooks is at majors. Nobody can flip the switch like he can. 8 holes to reach the top of the leaderboard today.

This basically feels like a Farmer's Open in July. Absolutely does not feel like a major.

love it when they show the leaderboard - say Henley leading at -3 and then 6 minutes later show the birdie attempt as if it didn't happen....hhmmmm i wonder if he makes it

If its 3am and I'm in the mood for some pizza I'll be sure to text American Express to see which places around me are open.

Rory is -1 through 5. Usually +4 about now in recent majors so maybe he’s got something going this week.

Yeah it does. One of the problems with having a major at a regular tour stop. And Torrey is pretty meh as a course.
Agreed on Torrey. Doesn’t really utilize the fact that it’s on the coast like Pebble does. No really distinguishing holes other than maybe 18. And 18 is only really famous for Tiger’s putt in 08.

Kinda wish there was more than just 1 memorable hole though, given the setting. The holes just kinda run together for me. Long, deep rough. Couple of cool visuals with the cliffs and sea but that’s it.
I agree. I've played it an it's sort of the anti-Pebble. Pebble has a few holes inland. Torrey has a few holes on the water.

Per Golf Channel, first round stroke average is 73.9, or about 3 over par. That seems US Openy, although it’s a stroke less than the first round of 2008.
Yeah maybe I just have unreasonable expectations of a slaughterhouse.

It did feel like the course was setup “fair” from my watching.

It may be that Torrey Pines is an exceptionally boring course leading me to believe its playing easy.

Oh agreed - this does not look like a very interesting or notably difficult course on TV from ground level. It’s looks great from a drone, but they don’t play golf from the air. Yet the numbers indicate it’s a tough course, despite the fact it’s pretty straightforward and seemingly fair.

Like others here have mentioned, I played the course and agree the only memorable holes are 3 and 18. The North Course had better views, too. I did play it before the redesigns, though.

First round stroke average at the Farmers Insurance Open this year was 73.36 (On the South course).

Need some biblical weather like the 2016 Farmer's Insurance when Snedeker went out early and shot a 69 then waited and watched crazy wind beat everyone else up (scoring average was 76 that day) on Sunday and then a Monday finish.

Torrey is just kind of a bland course. All the holes basically look the same. Maybe it's a product of the course being an annual tour stop so I see it year after year.
