Long term injury replacement (LTIR). Essentially teams can place a player on LTIR and exceed the salary cap by that players salary. The Lightning have 4 players with over $19 in cap hits on LTIR. 2 of these players were.acquired for the sole purpose of LTIR (Gaborik who wasn’t played in years and Anders Nilsson). A third is Kucherov. He is out for the regular season and makes $9.5 million. When you activate a player from LTIR you have to be cap compliant, but the cap goes away in the playoff. So they’ll activate Kucherov for game 1 and play with a $100 million roster
It's embarrassing the sport is letting it happen. If the lightning win anything they should have a major asterisk. They are working around the cap by nearly 20 percent. Every team would much better with 20 million dollars to spend.

Sorry for the dumb question. I get the Kucherov dodge. But what's the advantage with someone like Gaborik? You get relief in the amount of the player's salary, but that only offsets the amount paid to a non-player, right? I must be missing something here...
they can go over the cap by the same dollar amount that is on LTIR. The lightning were not able to sign Cirelli so they traded coburn pacqurtte and a second to the sens for those ltir cap hits so they could sign cirelli. It essentially moved active cap to ltir cap. Aside from kucherov they have to pay a price for this stuff. A second for cap space, a first for David savard (lol) but they are definitely NOT at $81.5m.

Jon Merrill to Montreal for a 5th and depth AHL player.

Victor Mete and Sami Vatanen on waivers today. Neither are particularly good but they are expiring and are free. Given the Bruins D situation, might be worth a flier.

I'd take a flyer on Vatanen given our current D situation and the price is right.

After watching and cheering for Toronto to suck for that entire season leading into that 2010 draft and all the back and forth who was 1 and 2 it would be wild to have the bruins end up having both seguin and hall play for them

That feels like a massive overpay for “intangibles” but I guess you pay a premium if you have no cap space.

CBJ picked up half of Foligno’s remaining cap hit - which probably accounts for the overpayment. I guess we’ll see how much Veteran Presence, Grit and Veteran Know How helps in the playoffs. As a long suffering Leafs fan I’d have preferred actual goals and assists instead of the intangibles.

They were rumoured to be in on Hall but the necessary cap shenanigans may have been too tough to pull off.

Hall's got a shooting percentage of 2.3% this year. He'll fit right in.

More seriously, if the plan is to play Hall with Krejci, or continue playing Pastrnak on Krejci's line, I'm afraid all this is going to show is how far Krejci has declined this year. Digging into the numbers for Pastrnak this year:

Situation Time Corsi High Danger Chances Expected Goals
with Krejci 117 minutes 50.25% 40.74% 48.46%
without Krejci 352 minutes 61.02% 51.89% 56.93%

If Hall ends up on Bergeron's wing, I fully expect we'll see his shooting percentage trend toward his career average of 10 percent. But it's going to come at the continued cost of saddling Pastrnak with Krejci, which quite frankly sucks.

Do those Pastrnak numbers reflect Krejci being bad or how good Bergeron and Marchand are?

Am I allowed to both really like it and really hate it?

To me it signals that they want to go for it this year, which is good, but..... I just don't think the few moves they have made get them that much closer. I guess they aren't really giving up THAT much, but a 2nd and 3rd round pick isn't nothing.

It's really too bad Bjork never progressed here, I do like him as a player.

I am mostly annoyed that they had to burn assets to acquire this moron who claimed he wanted only to compete and then signed with fucking Buffalo.

I’m going to start a thread. Hall has point per game upside and is a perfect fit given that they already have a #1 center, wing and D on the team.

Are they great? Nope. But they’re pretty good and have a chance.

Kulikov goes to Edmonton for a conditional 4th.

Janmark to Vegas via San Jose. Looks like a 2nd to Chicago, plus something to San Jose for facilitating the finances.

Sam Bennett to FLA for a 2nd and a prospect.

Eric Gustafsson from PHI to MTL. Guessing a late round draft pick.

Last minute stuff trickling in. B's appear done, but I guess you never know.

Leafs grabbed Ben Hutton from Anaheim
Canes traded Hayden Fleury to Anaheim, not sure the return yet.
Michael Raffl goes from Philly to Washington
Eric Gudbranson goes from Ottawa to Nashville for a 7th (guess NSH needed to replace Tinordi!)

Sounds like it's Panik, Vrana, 1st, 2nd for Mantha.

To be honest I haven't really paid too much attention to Detroit the past few years. Is Mantha really worth all that? Panik is obviously just salary filler, but Vrana a 1st and a 2nd seems like an awful lot.

I only know him from the RealFantasy stuff but he had good underlying numbers on a crap team the last couple years. That said, he had a very slow start to the year but has come on more lately. His O zone starts are down this year and that's led to a hit on his other numbers.

He really is a good player. Line driver type but the production has lagged behind the underlying numbers and the talent. He has been a white whale for me for a while as he's exactly the RW the Bruins have been missing since Horton but Yzerman committed a crime here. Vrana is a very good player who is younger and actually more productive than Mantha (counting stats). Even if you don't think they are equal players, the wings also got a 1st and a 2nd.

Washington is also dumping Panik's $2.75 AAV for 2 more years. That factors in somewhere.

Do those Pastrnak numbers reflect Krejci being bad or how good Bergeron and Marchand are?
It's most likely a bit of both, but it's curious to try to track down exactly how Krejci has declined. One thing that jumps out to me is his individual high-danger chances. He had 30 in 61 games last year and 43 in 81 the year prior. So by himself he's usually chipped in a high danger chance once every other game. This year in 35 games he's only generated 7 such chances, or one every five games.

For his line, there's been a drastic decline as well. In the 18-19 season, his line generated 209 HDCF in 81 games (2.6 per game). Last season, it was 138 in 61 games (2.2 per game). This year, Krejci's line has generated 54 HDCF in 35 games, or 1.5 per game.

Unsure what exactly has happened to him, but his ability to create high-quality scoring chances has diminished greatly.
