And it was like 6 inches from being 38-9. It was an absolute beatdown.
And two of the FGs were from relatively long distance (49 and 52 yards). Those are not gimmes. It was a lopsided blowout.

As I said to someone else, while some of the calls were ticky-tack, the Chiefs have made holding receivers on every play a fundamental plank of their defensive game plan while daring refs to call them all, so sorry if I don't feel bad if the officials did call some during the biggest game of the year.
Exactly. This reeked of a reffing point of emphasis brought up by the Bucs in the run-up to the game.

Yeah, and as I pointed out in the game thread Romo made this point very early on in the game (something along the lines of “they basically hold every play”) so clearly this was something obvious to anyone who watched film of KC.

I mean, don't call a monumentally stupid timeout on 3rd and 2 and don't jump offsides on a FG attempt and those penalties probably don't hurt you much (not even getting into the merit of the calls being wrong or not). KC made a shit ton of stupid mistakes last night.

They unraveled... early.
At one point there was a skirmish in the 3rd quarter that almost looked like Seahawks post butler INT. (it clearly didn't escalate the way that one did)
Also, in the 2nd quarter, there was a shot of the KC bench with Mathieu and Hill yelling at each other... why the F are they arguing? I get people being competitive and fiery, Hell, I never hated on Brady for getting into it with McDaniels, but why are 2 guys on the opposite side of the ball going back and forth?

They got punched in the face and never recovered which is odd because they've come from behind a ton in the playoffs.

Kelce in particular looked shell shocked the whole game, it was so weird. I thought I'd never seen a team be as comfortable while down big as this iteration of the Chiefs, but they just crumbled.

I thought the same thing; heading into the half they looked like they were a beaten and defeated team. They really needed to have a hot start to the second half to regain some of their swagger and put pressure on Tampa Bay. Instead they had to settle for a long field goal and Tampa came down the field and ran it right down their throats with Fournette for another TD, showing they could easily kill the clock by running the ball and still score touchdowns. At that point it was ovah.

Fournette's taken a lot of crap as a pro, much of it earned, but he played his ass off yesterday. He made some really smooth change-direction moves that gained 3-4 extra yards on runs. Total focus.

Don't know if this is true, but on NFLN this morning one of the talking hairdos said that that the first call Fournette goit when he was released was from TB12

How much crap is Andy Reid getting today if the Chiefs don't win that Super Bowl last year? It seemed like it totally changed his reputation and last night was back to the old Andy Reid. His offensive game plan with a depleted OL was a joke. No extra blockers staying in to help the OL on most plays really hung Mahomes out to dry.

It's actually pretty remarkable. Fournette looked pretty cooked during the regular season. Slow and plodding. Then he gets to the playoffs and averages 4.7 YPC against 4 good-to-very good defenses with almost 450 total yards and 4 TDs. Will be interesting to see what he does this offseason. He just turned 26 so he's not getting a monster deal but does somebody give him starting RB money? I don't think Tampa can afford him unless he plays for a similar deal as 2020.

I know it's not the Chiefs style, but at 14-6 I just don't know why they didn't run more. Yeah, it's second guessing, but their back was having some success and it certainly would have given Tampa something else to think about.

TB being a big Fournette guy was what I suspected from the time they signed him (*pats self on back*). Ronald Jones can do a lot of the macro RB duties quite well; he'll break off a big run here and there, he's elusive, etc. but he fails at the little things that make winning players winners. Drops, fumbles, whiffed blocks are all part of the RJ package and I'm sure TB knew that as he transitioned to the Bucs. Fournette took some time to get conditioned into the TB offense, but once he did he was clearly the better back of the two and Tom looks pretty smart if he actually did lobby to make what looked like a redundant signing.

Edit - looking at the stats the Bucs were 8 - 0 in games where Fournette got 10 or more carries (including the playoffs).

This is really interesting, largely becuase I have been hating on Fournette all year, and thought Jones was the better back (especially when healthy), especially in non-obvious passing situations. Fournette was a pass-dropping machine (15% vs. 12% for Jones) most of the season, never breaking tackles (0 vs. 10 for Jones) or picking up yards after contact. (2.0 vs. 3.0 for Jones). Jones did have 2 fumbles with ~200 carries vs. 0 fumbles for Fournette in ~100 carries.

That said, Fournette certainly played his ass off yesterday. Good for him.

Had his team played a little better he would be getting killed for ther timeouts at the end of the first half.

Kellerman might have capitulated, but never count out Rob Parker:

@RobParkerFS1: "NO WAY, NO HOW! Last night's 7th Super Bowl did NOT change this man's opinion... —Tom Brady has officially become the Robert Horry of the NFL!"

That's the thing I didn't get. If the D is getting pressure with 4, you have no option but to keep in an extra blocker and I don't recall seeing that much. Any team would suffer losing Fisher and not having some time to adjust, but this seemed blindingly obvious. If the Bucs are still getting home with 4 (and even the occasional 5) with 6 blockers, OK you're seriously behind the 8-ball and you adjust again, but I don't remember seeing 2 TE sets or the RBs blocking anyone.

Well, when your TE is Travis Kelce and he can't block a spam phone number, you've got issues.

I don't know about their other TEs behind Kelce, but if one of those guys can actually block then you're adding a TE and subbing out someone like Byron Pringle. If their back-up TEs stink at blocking then that's GM'ing malfeasance.

The Chiefs used 5 blockers on 92% of dropbacks and that is insane and stupid...how they were not prepared to use more blockers is beyond me.

Pressure with 4 is the easiest way to slow any offense, especially to the great ones. But for Reid to not even think to keep extra blockers in when he knew his obvious weakness is malpractice.

I don't think it was necessarily a preference thing. I think it's more that TB wants as many weapons as possible, and injuries are a concern. LF was a healthy scratch at least once, and during the season RJ definitely played more and better. It wasn't a conditioning thing since LF averaged 6.5 carries in weeks 9-17.

RJ only had less than 10 carries 4 times all year, and the team went 10-3 in games with more than 10 carries. He did miss 3 games at the end of the year, including the first round playoff game where LF played well and never relinquished his role.

Not gonna lie - getting a little tired of the YASSSSSSS QWEEEEEEEEEN segment of Twitter.

View: https://twitter.com/kidnoble/status/1358622460346793984

Comparing Williams' 23 grand slam titles and Brady's seven Super Bowls is apples and oranges stuff. There are four Grand Slam tournaments in each calendar year. Also, Williams has one more title than the #2 player on that list, Steffi Graf. Brady has two more Super Bowl rings than the second most winningest player in Super Bowl history (Charles Haley), and three more than the closest quarterback (Joe Montana).

I'm not even a Brady guy. But give me a break.

Either way, Sir Donald Bradman is still the GOAT of GOATs.

Twitter has been that way forever (I've got a take that Bianca Belair has never really impressed me as a performer that will never, ever see the light of day).

I find the GOAT of GOATs conversation to be just ridiculously stupid. The GOAT conversation is skeptical enough when we are talking about the same sport, when you bring it into the world of ALL OF SPORTS it becomes even more ridiculous.

I know nothing about cricket, but when he retired a few years ago Sachin Tendulkar was getting a lot of GOAT praise, but again I have no knowledge of the sport.

Aleksandr Karelin probably won't come up much in those clickbait articles, but he was probably the most dominant athlete in the history of modern sport.

This is the stat I was looking for when I put together my original post. Everyone fellated Reid and Bienemy for their game planning the last 2 years and they laid a major dud here. Obviously it's not their fault they had a depleted O-line in the biggest game of the year but the lack of adjustments was alarming.

Comparing a team sport GOAT to an individual sport GOAT is ridiculous.

Edit: for individuals I'd vote Edwin Moses, Michael Phelps, Katie Ledecky, and that Russian wrestler who Rulon Jones upset up there with Serena.

I always get into this, but what is the competition? How much of the word competes? How motivated are they? No track athlete as a kid thinks, "Gee I hope my top end speed is insufficient to be a 400m guy and I have to switch to hurdles" Moses hit a sweet spot where he was in an event that had little competition and it was just becoming financially viable for track athletes to compete for more than 4 years. Swimming is a rich country sport that has a few pockets of intense training. It is harder to get to the G league than to win a swimming medal. My daughter is a wrestler, but she is one of the few countries, and one of the few parts of one of those countries that care. She is probably an age group national champ if not for covid, but it was probably as hard for her brother to win a city title in Basketball.

Making the Brazilian national team in soccer is harder than most of the championships we get excited about.

It is not my area of expertise, but whoever is the most accomplished male soccer player, that's your GOAT.

Not to fill this thread with content from Chief's Planet, but this was a thread that starts off with someone highlighting Brady's classy interactions post-game with Mahomes and Kelce, and devolves immediately into people bashing Brady, calling him a pedophile, claiming that the NFL rigged the game, complaining about Tampa getting a "home" game and my personal favorite, pearl clutching about a disreputable person like Antonio Brown winning a Super Bowl:

I mean, he did bounce them from the playoffs 3 times in the last 6 years.
I remember watching that divisional game back in January 2016. I was in Kyoto for the long weekend and the game was on Sunday morning, local time. My boss at the time was a big KC fan. He was pretty quiet when we were back in the office on Tuesday. I guess it has been a long time of Brady dominance.
