BD has clear weaknesses in his mental game. Cantlay has far fewer challenges in this area. PC deserves the Patty Ice moniker. I was impressed.

BD comes off as a petulant toddler. I noticed he regularly walked into Cantlay's field of vision as PC lined up crucial putts. I was taught you never ever do this, move into a guy's field of vision as he is about to putt. Further, you're supposed to be sure neither you nor your shadow if applicable, is anywhere near the opponent much less moving into his field of vision.

It was Cantlay who should have called out BD for this and other ettiquette fails but he's a mentally more mature dude. The outcome pretty much confirmed this.

Tee times and starting scores have been posted for the Tour Championship. How far back does someone have to be to have a legitimate chance at closing the gap on Cantlay

I really hate the format where they all start at different scores. I'd rather they all start at the same score but drop half the field.

Brooks has erased a 5-shot net lead and has tied Bryson. They would be a Friday pairing if everything holds. (It won’t.)

My favorite quirky golfer, Kevin Na is in 4th. I dont think he has a shot at the top but I would love to see him finish strong today.

Not quite PGA but watching the Euro Ladies PGA and I guess some of them dont have caddies?
Some of the golfers on the tour don’t have a regular tour caddie, so in past years they would employ a local caddie to haul the bag. Back in 2020 the LPGA gave the players the option to carry their own bags because of covid and the health concerns of working with someone they didn’t know. I assume the Euro LPGA adopted the same policy. This was supposed to be a temporary expedient and don’t know if its still in effect in the US but it sounds like it is in Europe. Fwiw, the Symetra Tour, the women’s equivalent of the Korn Ferry Tour, always allowed the women to do away with the caddie and carry their own bags or use push carts. They don’t make a lot of money on the Symetra tour so one can understand why they have that policy.

The BMW at Wentworth has been insane today. Billy Horschel just stuffed a wedge at the 18th and looks set to take a one-shot lead with only Laurie Canter on the course capable of catching him; if someone has to drop out of the US team for the Ryder Cup, I wonder if Horschel might have earned himself a place?

Bryson is doing well in the long drive. He topped out at 412 yards yesterday and easily advanced to day 2. There's 64 players left and they'll trim it down to 32 today. Apparently the consensus in the long drive community is he can contend and reach the final wave (8 players), though winning it all might be tough for him. There's a hurting wind today which may give Bryson an advantage because he might be able to flight it better than some of the other guys who just launch them.

I'm guessing 10% of Justin Thomas' winnings is a lot more than an on course reporter makes. John Wood is very good also, but I agree that Bones was the best
Yeah, JT made $6.5M this year. It's definitely a loss for the TV broadcast.

We had a former Long Drive champion at a local golf tournament to put on a show and help raise money for charity. I looked at his stats and he was well into the 400s (and was hitting some well over 400 when putting on his show for us). All to say that Bryson is doing exceptionally for a pro golfer but he is not close to championship long drive level, and if he goes after it too hard to gain so much distance in a short amount of time then how will he not injure himself.
My take in advance of the Ryder Cup continues to age poorly. It is the Fall (season) of DeChambeau.

I havent seen any of the long drive stuff but I imagine Bryson does have some higher level skill controlling drives than typical long drive competitors do… tour-level trajectory control might really favor him in windy conditions.

I wouldn’t write him off.

Twelve holes is really weird… who the fuck came up with that
TV friendly. 12 holes vs 18 cuts at least an hour from the broadcast. And on Black Friday, there's a bunch of competition for eyeballs (college football, etc). Also gives every hole a bit more urgency, which cranks up the drama.

Something tells me there won't be much in the way of friendly ribbing or joking like we've seen in some of these other match play one-offs. Probably best to keep it shorter since there will be some dead time between shots.

Looking at this season's schedule here.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2021–22_PGA_Tour

Got me thinking: Outside of the major events (four majors, Players Championship, Tour Championship), what are your favorite stops on the PGA tour? Which tournaments do you enjoy the most? It could be due to the time of year, the venue, the field, whatever.

I've always liked the Pebble Beach Pro-Am. The Memorial is another one I have high on the list.

Outside of majors I like the Waste Management Phoenix Open (very unique event that's embraced crowd involvement) and Riviera (usually a very elite field and the course is spectacular). I really enjoy Bay Hill as well but the field is starting to get a bit watered down with the crowded early Spring schedule.

Riviera is the best non-major venue by a long shot.
Riviera is pretty great. But Kapalua is awesome - I wish the Tournament of Champions was on at a reasonable hour here in the UK, because that's an event I would watch just for the golf course. Others I like are (as others have mentioned) Pebble Beach,TPC Sawgrass and Muirfield Village; Austin Country Club is also a pretty great venue specifically for the WGC Match Play. (I'm a bit down on Harbour Town relative to its exalted status, actually...it's just way too tight with trees to be truly interesting to me.)

Btw, Pebble Beach may be a great course, but I find the pro-am format of the AT&T to be totally unwatchable for three days. Sad.

Quick shout out and recommendation for the most recent No Laying Up Podcast with Max Homa. They talk about mental health for a fair bit as well as his travel schedule. Max was articulate and funny

By the way, I didn't see any chat here about this:

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2021/oct/12/golf-club-length-rule-bryson-dechambeau-proof-courses

R&A and USGA introducing a local rule to limit driver length to 46 inches as of 1 January - almost certain to be enforced at the US Open and Open Championship, uncertain if it might be enforced elsewhere. (I wonder what Bryson could have done to the Old Course in the Open on some holes with a 48-inch driver?)
The PGA Tour and USGA have already said they will enforce the rule starting January 1 in their events. Not sure on the LPGA, Augusta National, and others. Mickelson is already lashing out on Twitter.

Bryson experimented with, but has stuck with complying equipment. The only people I can think of harmed by this rule are Phil and Brooke Henderson. Maybe taller golfers will be impacted, although I’m not sure as Brooke is only listed as 5’4”. Because of this, the rule seems proactive, as not many as taking advantage of the extra length, but the USGA feels this will be commonplace, once more people start experimenting with longer shafts.

EDIT: I found this old video and Henderson uses the max length driver because she grips down a few inches on all her clubs, not for any distance advantage.

Eh. It basically only impacts the pros. I don't necessarily think it's good that the governing bodies regulate based on what the pros can do though.

$10 million, no cut purse in Vegas. The purse is basically the largest on tour outside of majors, WGC's and the invitationals (Genesis, API, Memorial) and really only $500K lighter than the invitationals. That will attract a good field.

Rory won.

Tour in Japan this week so live golf is late. I really love how quiet and disciplined the Japanese crowds are… there is _no_ shouting.
