2021 PGA Tour

It's funny...a lot of Faldo's folksy-sounding Britishisms are actually just commonplace sayings in Britain - not exactly cliches, for the most part, but nothing that would sound particularly interesting coming out of the mouths of anyone who has lived here for any length of time. But I like that he's willing to use them and just be himself; I don't always like who Faldo is, but I never think he's trying to be someone else. He's very much like Tony Romo, as I think I've said before: some people love them, and their patterns of speaking, and others really do not.

Re: Nantz: Decades ago CBS got rid of Brent Musburger because he was doing EVERYTHING, and the network felt like he was too ubiquitous. They brought in Nantz but they've done the same thing with him. He's doing basically every sport they have to offer. Guy is everywhere.
He doesn't do college football any more, at least. He does NFL, golf and college basketball, which in and of itself doesn't seem excessive - does he do anything else? Does CBS have any other major rights deals tha he could be doing?

Good question. I don't know what else CBS does. Every time I turn on CBS sports, it seems like Nantz is on my screen.

I'd imagine it's not feasible to do the SEC game of the week on Saturday afternoon/night and then do an NFL game the next day.

I know it's their flagship event and it's a few weeks away but holy fuck with the Players promos.
Keep in mind that it's possible that those ads likely run as filler for unsold local ad avails.

I'm watching the Featured Groups coverage right now, and I'm trying to decide if I'd rather play all 18 holes at Riviera or just play the 10th hole 18 times in a row.
Haha, you would be sick of playing 10 quicker than you think. 10 is great though I wish the pros had to hit longer shots into it sometimes. For us mortals it's a different animal, though they don't have the greens quite as fast for non-tourney play.

Top 5 Riviera holes for me:
18
15
4
12
2

Honorable mention to 1 because it's always great to start a round with a birdie and 2 is a beast into the wind (usually is). I've started 4-5 much more often than I've started 5-4.

Always like 6 (par 3 bunker in the center of the green) and 16 (par 3 surrounded by bunkers) right next to each other on the same side of the course.

There isn't a bad hole on the course, Riv is as good as it gets.

Atypically windy today at the course, will be a fun round to watch. Can make it really tough out there with the small greens, too bad they never grow out the rough for the tourney.

Interested to see if a Burns can keep it together or he comes back to the pack.

Are you a member by any chance or do you play there as a guest?

My father was a member, he just passed away last year :(. My mom still lives down the street from the course.

I was a junior member for many years. Before ownership changed the best deal in town was $10 (!!!) junior guest fee.

New member fees are totally outlandish so I’m stuck with the very occasional guest rounds and living vicariously through the pros now.

I’m sorry to hear about your dad, please accept my condolences. I hope your mom is doing well. It can be pretty tough on an elderly person when their partner dies.

I really wish more courses would have cheap fares for junior golfers. It would be an easy way for the industry to grow the game.

Much appreciated. Yes it’s been a crazy year for her (and everyone). He passed in Feb 2020 just before the COVID craziness.

She’s 64 so not too elderly.... Fortunately lots of family around to make things at least marginally more bearable .

How do civilian golfers handle the 6th green? Are the members are allowed to swing wedges?

Can’t hit a wedge unless it’s a member tournament.

The green slopes enough that you can usually get any put within about 15-20 feet of the hole even if the bunker is directly in the way.

One of my college golf teammates came from a relatively poor Korean family in the San Francisco area - I think his dad played public golf, and my friend showed enough aptitude as a junior that he was scooped up to play as a junior member for both the Olympic Club and Green Hills (a very hilly Alister MacKenzie course nearer to where he lived). The junior golf setup there was amazing, and amazingly cheap as well; maybe it's a California thing?

Could be.... though it might be a thing of the past. How long ago was this?

LA had great junior guest rates for Riv, Bel Air, LA country club in the 90s. Of course still needed to be fortunate to know members.

I don’t think anything close to that is still going on unfortunately.

SCGA Junior offers cheap greens fees for certain courses if you are a member.

FYI, they're just about to start play again, following the four-hour delay for high winds.
Major wind difference over the last couple of hours. I really wish they would have played in the wind so Riv could show its teeth a bit but I guess if the balls won't stay on the green what can you do.

Greens aren't usually cut this tight and this wind is atypical but not that uncommon. Makes some of the par 4s borderline unreachable in 2 for good players.

As an aside, the Goodyear blimp was in the sky the entire time and a few times this morning we thought for sure it was going down. Blowing like crazy up there.

18 would be tough for me since you hafta tee off to a fairway up the hill that you cant see right?

Must be nice that there are no spectators clogging your hood today.
Hahah was just talking about how odd it is that the tourney is going on right now, it's so quiet. Usually the local junior high is packed with cars and tons of random people roaming around.

When I was growing up all the local houses charged $20-30 a car and we filled our driveways as much as we could. Was a nice job for high school kids.

Yeah, blind fairway and big elevation to see the fairway.

For the members there is a tall periscope type thing that you can look into to see if the group ahead has hit their 2nd shots.

Spieth was rolling and got to -9 and now he appears to have fallen apart. He is all over the course, now missing short putts and making bad chips. And his tee shots and approach shots have been pretty poor for the last 8 holes. He was scrambling but now it's just messy. -6 now and a longish putt for par coming up after one of those bad chips.

Riv is absolutely brutal when it's cold and wind is blowing late in the day.

Par is a great score on every hole on the back 9, the pros I'm sure were thrilled to hear the horn.

Burns was leaking oil. Tomorrow will be fun.

Burns just got so lucky. Ducked it well over the fence and bounced back in play.
Leaderboard just got a little tighter. And it still might get tighter still.

DJ had a chance to roll and he's been pretty average today. I'm pulling for Finau or Homa.

Nice birdie by Finau on 16. If he can get in the house at -12 my guess is that he’s the guy..

Finau always finds a way to blow it. But I hope he hears your post and turns it on with this Par 5.

Needs the birdie here. Nobody is birdying 18.

I really like Cam Smith but I can’t get behind ... whatever that is under his nose.

Edit: and apparently his putter was distracted by it too.
