They called it that because the amateurs played. In a limited field tournament before the pros.
There's actually a little bit more to it than just that. Beyond just tradition, it's the only event in which the title sponsor is not the only name on the event and that's contractual. Every other non-tour owned event is just The Waste Management, The John Deer, The Genesis, etc. Changing the name has contractual implications that probably just aren't worth the effort. Beyond that, it just creates more work to change scripted content, graphics, etc. that are produced well ahead of the event itself.

A great question asked and discussed by the No Laying Up guys on their latest podcast: if Patrick Reed doesn't automatically qualify for the Ryder Cup team - and remember, only the top 6 get in automatically this time - should Stricker make him a captain's pick?
This is a really interesting question. Didn't he and Brooks almost get into an actual fight after the last Ryder Cup? If one qualifies and the other doesn't, I'd leave the other out. If Reed doesn't qualify, he'd have to be head and shoulders better than whoever else was on my list for me to choose him.

All true, but Reed is really good in Ryder Cup competition. 7-4-1 overall and 3-0 in singles matches. Really his only blemishes have been an 0-2 mark when paired with Tiger Woods, of all people.

It was actually DJ and Brooks that reportedly almost got into a fight. Or were there multiple fights?

Yeah, that's what makes it a really interesting question. He's "Captain America" for a reason, but does he make everyone else worse? If he's costing the team overall by being generally not liked (I don't know if this is true) then leaving him off may be addition by subtraction.

I thought a "Pro-Am" was by definition a tournament in which the Pros played with the Ams. (Also, what @jercra said.) Not a big deal, though.

As for the Reed question, I suppose it comes down to whether you think team chemistry matters at the Ryder Cup. Everyone - and especially the Europeans - seems to think it does, not that I'm entirely sure why it should. And Reed is not a good standard bearer for American golf; can you imagine what would happen if Reed tried to bend the rules at the Ryder Cup? That said, I think @Lupe Whalewatch is right that Stricker will pick Reed if he's in the Top 12. Whether or not he should is more the issue - and also, whether Stricker has the personality as captain to exert any sort of influence over Reed at all, or if Reed is destined to be Loose Captain America Cannon all week.

I’d be stunned if they left Reed off the Ryder Cup team. First, while they are saying only 6 auto qualify, I’d be really surprised if anyone who finishes 7-10 is skipped. Reed is currently 7th and in good form so I don’t anticipate him slipping down much further. Secondly, they brought him to the Presidents Cup as a captains pick coming off the calamity of the France Ryder Cup. Maybe the disaster of a Presidents Cup, which was a week after the bunker incident, included him going 0fer team play and his caddie getting into and altercation with a fan is enough to keep him off. The brain trust and captains are all the same ones that have been the brain trust of the last several team competitions. Stricker is captain but the VC’s will probably include Furyk, DL3, Tiger (if he is not playing). Etc, They’ve all pretty much exclusively defended him. I don’t think they are ready to black list the guy.

I'm not sure the Reed hate is significant at the national casual fan level. It's just a gut feeling but I think the people on the internet screaming about his rules issues are loud and few. I'm not saying he's secretly Mr. Popular or anything but it just doesn't feel like a huge chunk of fans actually care. He'll be on the team if he's playing reasonably well enough and something major doesn't pop up between now and then.

The only way he's not on the team is if he finishes outside the top 6 and there is a mutiny where the 6 auto qualifiers plus some other locks and key figures say they will not play/participate if he is on the team. I don't think we're there. The cheating won't play a role whatsoever. France was a total shit show but the same group brought him along to Australia. Australia was a shit show too but that was external forces (fans). This is a home game so that won't be an issue. If they were on the road, maybe it's more of a discussion point. As far as I know, there were no beef's on that team. They won which has a way of quieting any in house grumpiness and also Tiger was the captain and I don't think anyone really would go down the road of shitting on him.

Side note on fan reaction to Reed. He hasn't really played in front of fans since the first cheating incident at the Hero. That was December 2019. The Presidents Cup the next week was a disaster for him fan wise. Since then, he only really played 7 events before the shutdown. 2 in Hawaii, 1 in Saudi Arabia, 1 in Mexico and then the Farmers, Genesis and API. Not exactly a murderers row. He got heckled a little in Maui IIRC, but that's it and then the shutdown and no-fan events started.

DJ rocking a hoodie of sorts. Not a full on sweatshirt, but still not something you see every day on the PGA Tour. I think JT's also done it.

Is it one of those long sleeve tshirts with a hood on it? Those are popular these days. Nike's is very popular and is one of the most comfortable things I own.
The Levelwear Thrive lightweight hoodie is my favorite piece of clothing. Basically a long sleeve t shirt with a hood, like you said.

I am very much pro-hoodie on the course. Glad to see them becoming acceptable.

Yeah I've worn my Nike lightweight hoodie on the course as well. It's not collared, but it's becoming more and more accepted these days.

For me it's no different than wearing a crew neck sweatshirt/sweater, which also doesn't have a collar and is acceptable.

God Riv is an unbelievable course. Very high on my bucket list to play.

I always find it fun when a WD forces someone random into one of the featured groups. Today it is Andrew Putnam who replaces Cam Champ. Putnnam is playing with Rory and the Big Golfer.

Edit: Bryson actually doesn't look quite as big.

like a two club difference, maybe three from 4th hole (240yd par 3) and the 10th playing 309 par 4

i feel like i say this every Thursday and Friday, but the telecast is basically only showing the groups that are the featured ones which is the sole reason you pay for PGA Live. SHOW SOME OTHER GOLFERS

The 10th hole is killer. I have spectated there many times and I like to stand behind the tee box at 10 and watch these guys aim for the green. It is very humbling.
When I went to the Friday of the Open Championship at St. Andrews in 2000, I spent about four hours just sitting behind the Road Hole, watching the pros try to deal with that unique green and the obstacles around it. If I were to ever go to the event at Riviera, I'd absolutely just go to the 10th green and watch everyone flounder - and a few people spectacularly succeed.

Someone should design a course that consists of nothing but short par 4s with a high risk/reward factor and maybe a few par 3s and risk/reward par 5s to mix things up.

I hate Nick Faldo The Announcer so much. He's absolute garbage out there.
Overly serious Faldo trying to be super analyst with verbal diarrhea patting himself on the back was brutal.

Drunk Uncle Faldo making bad jokes and giving Nobilo shit is hilarious, however. I'm enjoying his new persona that seems to have come about this year.

Nantz sucks. I'm on Team Faldo.

Hicks, Faldo, Maltbie, Bones, Feherty, Koch would probably be my ideal lineup. I did like Faxon when he was with Fox, I'd fit him in somewhere.

Re: Nantz: Decades ago CBS got rid of Brent Musburger because he was doing EVERYTHING, and the network felt like he was too ubiquitous. They brought in Nantz but they've done the same thing with him. He's doing basically every sport they have to offer. Guy is everywhere.
