That’s the right call, IMO. Wade’s speed and defensive versatility offset his weak bat. Bruce is going to impact the Yankees in a good way.

Yeah, I think they'd love to keep Tauchman but it's hard to see how that is possible with a 4 man bench that already includes Gardner. Bruce gives you a backup 1B so that DJ can focus on 2B and maybe occasionally 3B.

So the assumption is that he triggered the opt-out and now they have to make a call, right?

Mike Axisa points out that Derek Dietrich in the lineup today likely means he didn't opt out and is willing to go to the alternate site, but none of this seems set in stone.

Yeah, I think everyone would, but it is up to him if he sees a better opportunity somewhere else. Seems like he is staying for now, though.

This is from an ESPN tweet:

Marly RiveraESPN Writer
Boone announces that Luke Voit will start the season on the IL due to a meniscus tear in his knee (L); will be shut down for 3 weeks. Jay Bruce has been added to the roster. Per Boone, Mike Tauchman will be the extra outfielder, "as of right now
Terrible news regarding the injury, but at least it didn't happen a few days later when Bruce may have been gone.

They expect Voit back in May, not so bad. The odd thing is that this leaves NY with a bench of Higashioka, Gardner, Tauchman and Wade which means Wade is the only one on the team capable of replacing any of the infielders, very odd roster construction. Meanwhile 6 of NY's 13 position players can only play the OF or DH.

I like Tauchman and Gardner quite a bit, but yeah, that is a lot of outfielders.

It just makes me wonder how worried they are about Judge, Hicks, and Stanton all staying healthy and Frazier being able to play competent defense, especially in LF. All that "extra" covers a lot of potential uncertainty, but it isn't like the injury bug can't hit the infield.

Maybe if the OF can stay relatively injury free for a month or so, they'll figure out someone to trade and then improve infield depth.

One quietly promising thing is that they put Clarke Schmidt on the 60 day IL to clear a 40 man spot, not Britton. Since this means Schmidt gets service time while on the IL, presumably they are very optimistic about Britton coming back in May.

He’s on the batting practice list, Boone’s press conference is soon.

Something may be going on, Boone’s Zoom was canceled and Cashman is going to have one but it’s delayed.

NY released Jhoulys Chacin and re-signed Robinson Chirino, who is rehabbing his fractured wrist and will likely be back in about a month.

Sounds like Judge wasn't feeling well and so they had to check him for Covid but he is fine and ready for Opening Day, according to Boone just now.

In related news, Yankees Twitter SUCKS.

This is one of the reasons we appreciate you sifting through all the nonsense and bringing the important stuff back here.

Taking one for the team, so to speak. Like Dietrich will, when necessary, for the pinstripes.

It’s a house organ for Yanks, only good news is worthy of tweeting.

I didn’t mean the Yankee account specifically, I mean the entire community tweeting about the Yankees. The lineup gets posted, one person writes ‘Judge hasn’t played since Friday’, everyone copies/retweets them and it snowballs from there. Much ado about nothing...

Lucas Luetge officially took the last spot for NY, to no one's surprise. Wilson will go on the 15 day IL (is it 10 or 15 this year?), but NY will need a 40 man move to get Luetge on.

Opening Day roster:

LeMahieu 2B
Judge RF
Hicks CF
Stanton DH
Torres SS
Bruce 1B
Frazier LF
Urshela 3B
Sanchez C

Bench:

Higashioka
Wade
Tauchman
Gardner

Cole
Kluber
Taillon
Montgomery
German

King
Nelson
Loaisiga
Cessa
Luetge
O'Day
Green
Chapman

IL-Voit, Severino, Britton, Wilson

Also evidently Tauchman played 1B in college and was working out there seriously today, so that is quite interesting news that I was not aware of before.

The 40 man move for Luetge is Britton to the 60 day IL, which means he’s out to the end of May at least.
