I can't tell if the delusional thinking in the Knicks front office was Mills, Perry, or both. If Morris is still there after the deadline we will know that it was probably both.
The fish rots from the head down. You can't spell "delusional" without d-o-l-a-n.

Booker, Conley, JJJ, KAT, Kuzma, and Sexton as well. This is a big WOW in that if Dolan (yes, a big if) gives Rose the autonomy to build his team this could be really interesting with the new agent model of running a franchise.

Edit: William Wesley reportedly coming on board too. Times a changing in NY!

So Dolan told Spike Lee not to use an entrance Spike had previously used but Spike isn't having it. And so it's war...
https://nypost.com/2020/03/03/spike-lee-declares-war-on-knicks-after-being-harassed-by-james-dolan/
The Oscar winner and Knicks superfan strongly fired back at the team’s statement over his beef with Madison Square Garden security before Monday’s game against Houston in which he was caught on tape yelling that he was being treated like banned former star Charles Oakley.

Lee, appearing Tuesday morning on ESPN’s “First Take,” called the Knicks’ explanation during the game “Garden spin” and said he’s “being harassed by (Knicks owner) James Dolan and I don’t know why.”
Spike is likely in the wrong here but it's classic Dolan to be petty and shortsighted to treat his most high profile fan like trash.

I felt for sure Dolan was going to screw this up and go for Kidd.

It's Dolan, so there is still time, but I'll take that good news.

Yeah, this won’t end well. I like Tommy, but his martinet style wears old quickly.

Thibs will get the Knicks playing hard every night especially on D and get them a defined structure. It may not end well but for the next 2+ seasons he's going to be great for that team on the court. I like this hire.

That’s his rep, but it really didn’t work out that well without Doc there to massage the egos. His last young team was, consistently, a bottom ten defense led by a truly awful defender that had physical tools that Jason Tatum could only dream of.

Terrible coach, ridiculous franchise.

(I am a lifelong Knicks fan who has mostly stopped caring as long as Dolan owns the team)

I don't think he's a terrible coach, per se. He's just a great defensive coordinator/assistant, and his ego won't let him go back to doing what he does best (Dick Harter he ain't). So I think that this is destined to end badly.

He's a professional and is respected, but he has no concept of how to pace a team through a long season. It's a bummer but not a surprise that NY has chosen a retread instead of a young guy with potentially new and exciting ideas.

My Knicks friend hates this hire and wanted Kenny Atkinson. Basically said thibs is the definition of a good defensive coordinator and that’s it.

Old thread, new title...

As the title says, Immanuel Quickley is already looking like a very solid pick at #25. He missed a few games with injury but has looked like a spark plug whenever he has gotten on the floor in the preseason or these first few games. Tonight he out-Traed Trae down the stretch, drawing one three shot foul from the king himself as part of five straight FTs that put NY ahead to stay. Quickley played the entire 4th quarter (29-20 NY in a 113-108 win) and had 16 points in 19 minutes, a +17 in a 5 point win. He only had 1 assist but a bunch of passes that led to baskets a few shots later. Payton has been very good so far this year but Quickley needs minutes.

Also, pretty quietly NY has won 4 of 5 even with tons of guys out every game, 3 nice road wins in there:

W MIL 130-110
W @CLE 95-86
L @TOR 100-83
W @IND 106-102
W @ATL 113-108

Randle and Barrett might be up to 1/2 in minutes in the NBA, 43/44 minutes tonight respectively. Tom T has never been about resting his guys, those two had 54/28/14 between them.

Knicks fought back from 18 down to Utah and were tied at 96 with under 5 minutes left. Then Austin Rivers went nuts, 14 points in 3 1/2 minutes, all on long jumpers and NY won going away, 5-1 in their last 6 now.

The Knicks are slowly falling back to their level but Quickley continues to impress. Three of the past 4 games:

31 points in 24 minutes (@POR, outplaying Dame by a lot in the 4th)
25 points in 25 minutes (CLE)
25 points in 27 minutes (LAC)

He generally plays the entire 4th quarter now, the last 15 or 17 minutes. Today the Clippers tried George on him for a while, but that didn’t work either. Also he is a pretty good passer, he would have more assists with better offensive teammates.

I wouldn’t say the Knicks are really falling back. They competed hard on that 4-game Western swing with a win vs Warriors, taking the Blazers to the wire and being tied late 4Q in Sacramento. In their last three they smoked the Cavs and were simply outclassed by the Jazz and Clippers.

Thibs is doing what Thibs does. Jump into a franchise and gets them to compete/play hard while getting the younger players learning how to work. RJ is 20 and looks like a good one while they may have gotten the steak of the draft at 25(?) w/ Immanuel Quickley.

Nice pick... I was drooling over Quickley pre-draft, not sure why all the mocks had him going in the 2nd round.

why is SEC Player of the Year Immanuel Quickley mocked to go deep in the 2nd round?

The guy can shoot and could eventually be a 6' 3" PG with 6' 8"+ wingspan

I wouldn't mind the C's using the Milwaukee pick on him

Lot to talk about with the Knicks on a 9 game winning streak, one thing to note is how much their defense improves in the second half the last three games. Points allowed by half (ignoring OTs):

Charlotte: 66/31 (-35)
Atlanta: 69/53 (-16)
Toronto: 59/44 (-15)

Will be interesting to see how they hold up. Coach Thibs living up to expectations by riding his guys hard, even in this condensed schedule. Randle averaging 39 mins a game in April, and 42 over the last 6. They may need to avoid the play-in game just to get some of the guys a bit of a break.

Randle 37.5 mpg, Barrett 34.4 mpg, everyone else under 29. Is an additional minute per half over the norm for a team’s best player that big a deal?

Total minutes played is the better number to look at, Randle leads the league by a lot over Jokic and Barrett is third, just behind Jokic.

Julius Randle 2251
Nikola Jokic 2115
RJ Barrett 2098
Harrison Barnes 2079
Nikola Vucevic 2041

Tatum is the highest Celtic at 1959 in 10th.

On April 9, NY was 25-27 and playing Memphis at home. They were losing the whole game, down 12 with 5 minutes left and 6 with 1 minute left, before coming back to pull it out in OT. Tonight they beat Memphis in Memphis fairly easily, and in between they have only lost once, to the best in league Suns. So NY is 12-1 in their last 13, 37-28 now overall, and they needed all of those to have a shot to stay in the 4/5 seed matchup, with their next four being:

@DEN
@PHX
@LAC
@LAL

Then home to end the season against SAS, CHA and BOS. The season series with BOS is 1-1, so if they are within a game of each other, that final game should be fun.

While starting Elfrid Payton, Reggie Bullock, Nerlens Noel, and a 20-yr old kid.

Thibs may have completed one of the best regular season coaching jobs since Doc’s first year in Orlando. Unanimous COY.

And even Randle was pegged as a selfish cancer on the court coming into this season, seemingly fairly. I have never been a Thibs head coach fan over his career (stop playing your best guys 40 minutes every night to win a couple more regular season games) but wow has he been a good fit here.

It is a shame that Mitchell Robinson (still my favorite current Knick) is I guess done for the year but if the rest of the rotation is healthy, they will be a tough out. Noel and Gibson have both been incredible with Robinson out, a highlight reel of Noel's best 50 or 70 blocks this season would be as entertaining as anyone's.

MIL I think is the worst matchup for them, ATL the best (but still tough), MIA in between. The Nets at 3/6 would be interesting just because the three Super Friends have barely played together and NY would have nothing to lose and the city to win, but I think ATL is their best chance to win a series assuming the key guys on the other teams are all healthy. They would have a hard time with Capela and Young but vice-versa on the bad matchups and NY swept all three from ATL this year.

Disclaimer, and I know this makes this maybe a questionable contribution to this thread - I haven't watched the Knicks play at all this year. That said, given how the importance of star power levels up in the playoffs, I feel like the Knicks actually have high potential to be that surprising regular season team that people talk up that then gets summarily slaughtered in the playoffs. 2015 Hawks vibes, except they had more talent.

Monty Williams has done a hell of a job with the Suns, though Chris Paul probably deserves a lot of credit for that turnaround as well.

This is certainly a possibility although Rose is a former MVP who has been playing incredibly in recent weeks and Randle was the Eastern Conference player of the month in April and will likely make one of the All-NBA teams. They will certainly be a decided underdog to anyone but ATL, agreed.

Hey! The Hawks reached the Conference Finals that year (for the only time in my lifetime). They got slaughtered by the LeBrons, but the Knicks this year would kill to reach the Conference Finals and get swept.

Exactly. The ‘14-15 Hawks were also a 60-win #1 seed, not a generic #5-6 seed.

All due props to Thibs and the great play of Randle, Rose et al., but doubt anyone would care much about or remember this Knicks team if they didn’t (a) come into the season with dirt-low expectations; and (b) play in New York City. Linsanity redux.

Get out of the first round and we’ll tawk... :)
