Exactly. The ‘14-15 Hawks were also a 60-win #1 seed, not a generic #5-6 seed.

All due props to Thibs and the great play of Randle, Rose et al., but doubt anyone would care much about or remember this Knicks team if they didn’t (a) come into the season with dirt-low expectations; and (b) play in New York City. Linsanity redux.

Get out of the first round and we’ll tawk... :)
Well shit, this thread is supposed to be fun.
"If not for the reasons people are talking about them, nobody would be talking about them." Hm. Fascinating analysis.

Quinn Snyder in UT and Doc in PHI should get consideration too
Nate McMillan as well. They all should get consideration for 2nd place. #teamthibs

Having said that, the Knicks are going to be the most overvalued team in these playoffs. Good squad to fade. If they ever get the 4/5 w Miami oh boy I’ll be unloading the barrel.

Make up your mind: is it supposed to be fun or full of “fascinating analysis”? ;-P

Not begrudging anyone talking about the Knicks — least of all in a Knicks thread, lol. Just noting that the comparison to the 2014-15 Hawks is inapt.

The immediate thought about what the Knicks have done this past week is that they are just bringing back the same overachieving team that maxed out its talent, plus Fournier minus Bullock, but a look at the depth chart I think provides a bit more optimism.

Mitchell Robinson is a major impact guy who missed most of last season, I thought they would have had a shot against ATL with him. Barrett is still very young and hopefully on the rise, and Obi Toppin spent most of the season looking like he was playing a different sport, but then looked kind of awesome in limited minutes down the stretch of the season (Thibs did not play him enough in the playoffs IMO). If Robinson and Noel can cover all 48 minutes at the 5, the defense is anchored nicely the entire game, and a big upgrade from Noel/Taj Gibson, although Taj played his ass off and hopefully can still be fit in somehow if he wants to come back. They need another swingman and ARE STILL SOMEHOW missing a real starting PG, but maybe that can be Quickley, as Rose seemed a much better fit coming off the bench last year, but that should be an entertaining team to watch if they stay healthy.

But really they are a supporting cast waiting for a superstar to push them all down a rung, and it's hard to believe even optimistically that Randle will even come close to duplicating his spectacular regular season, so they'll probably be lucky to top .500 again.

Santa Monica
Grimes/McBride were two really nice pickups in the draft

Loved Quickley last year in the draft

Hate to admit it but the new management has them going in a really good direction

Robinson returns and I expect a major leap from Barrett. If Quickley also makes a leap this is going to be a real good regular season team.

How do the Knicks fan on this board feel about the Kemba/Rose/IQ trio? Thibs hasn't exactly been known as a Load Management guy even though that seems like the plan here.
Are you confident that Kemba/Fournier can be zone busters?

Seems to me that Kemba basically got thrown into the situation most here wanted him to be in… 20-25 mpg bench scorer. Maybe he’ll start but he probably has that type of role.

Rose can teach him how to managed a degenerated meniscus and arthritic knee.

Do we have any idea how much OKC ate of the $73MM owed Kemba?
Probably pennies but they will not be responsible for the difference between his original contract and the one he signed with the Knicks......so about $16m in savings (plus Horford’s contract they dumped).

So Kemba will get the majority of the $73M owed him? If that's the case lets say 57 from OKC and 16 from the Knicks, is the cap allocation for OKC all this year, or is it a 2 year hit to mirror the original contract, or can they stucture a payout over a multi-year period? Even accounting for the Horford money, it sounds like very expensive way to snag the #16th pick.

Yeah that wouldn’t make much sense. It would only make sense if Kemba gave up a bunch of money in the buyout and was able to recoup some in the Knicks deal.

Edit: Ty Cellar-Door, that does make much more sense.

either this year or stretched.
SMart move in a lot of ways, they were way under the cap and nobody was going to sign there, good chunk of the buyout is money they had to spend just to hit the floor anyway. And they cut the 2nd year of Horford off their cap. So they pay an extra 35-40M this year over what they would have owed Horford (15 or so of that you had to anyway to hit the floor) in return they:
1. Cut 14.5M from next year's cap
2. #16, which they turned into a Wizards 1st (could be good if Beal leaves) and Pistons 1st.

So they basically payed 20-25M for two firsts and future cap relief

There are a lot of protections on that pick. Probably doesn't help them them much for Beal to leave ('23 1-14, '24 1-12, '25 1-10, '26 1-8, otherwise 2 2nds).

Heh, 'the Knicks fan" I guess is me. :)

The only thing I've been confident about for many years as a Knicks fan is that Dolan is a Trump-level shithead who will almost certainly destroy any possibility NY ever has of being good. The roster on paper does seem like it will be competitive and enjoyable, but we all know you don't go anywhere in this league without a top 5 or 10 player and their best player is still Julius Randle, who did somehow make second-team All-NBA (and deserved it), but seems almost certain to regress.

I have a similar take but wanted to hear from a real one. Thanks.
