I'm pretty happy with that half from the US. We're not playing soft at all, we've had a few scary moments but haven't given up too many great chances, and have created some danger on the counterattack.

The longer this goes, the more pressure there will be on Mexico. Plus, this Mexican team is worn out after Nations League + the Gold Cup and might start to fade down the stretch — though our defensive approach is fairly high-octane so we have the same risk.

Sometimes it looks like the US up a goal or two in the first half
This is true, there are those games where two and three follow the first Mexican goal in rapid succession.

That’s partly why the Nations League punch for punch trading was so delightful.

Anyone more observant about tactics/roles than me: did Mexico look different in Moreno’s absence? I know it was only a few minutes.

Overall as good as could be expected at the half. The best chances are coming off pressure, but gotta wonder if the US can do it for the full 90. Bello holding his own defensively. A couple of errant passes, but he’s not getting overwhelmed by Corona.

I dunno. A lot of the Mexican attacks around the box look like a fire drill for the US Defense. Not organized and scrambling to clear.

Sure, but my POV is that this is reasonably close to Mexico's A team and it was always going to be like this. Being able to weather the storm, even if it isn't pretty, is a good thing, especially with the way that the USMNT has grown into games and come more alive offensively in the second half all tournament.

California. Duh.
Watching the US right now just makes me appreciate the players that can make accurate one and two touch passes consistently. We're getting some opportunities on the counter, but can't put the 2 or 3 quick passes together to spring it.

Agree on that.B\C team holding against Mexico A/B is a strong sign. Despite the ugly

Oh, Arriola.

love how Williamson is always pushing the ball forward. This squad needs that.
