Did someone say that? Because they didn't. The Pirates won the NL East in 1970, 71, 72, and then 74, 75, and 79. The Mets won the NL East in 1973, and the Phillies won in 1976, 77, and 78.

Sorry, five out of six. Still impressive. And Oakland five straiaght around the same time. But they never met in the WS.
And then they got blitzkrieged by the Reds and then the Dodgers twice.
The Phillies were true sad sacks in the 1970's, finally broke through and won it all in 1980 vs the Royals, then they got back again in 1983 and lost to the Orioles.
Yes, that 1980 World Series was like the 1970s "Bridesmaid Bowl" since both the Phillies and the Royals spent the late 70s missing out on the World Series despite having great teams.
The 1983 Phillies team was interesting because they were essentially the remnants of those late 70s teams plus some old members of the Big Red Machine (Rose, Morgan, and Perez), hence their nickname, "The Wheez Kids".
