I guess Graham gives NO a scorer and floor space, but it makes one of the worst defensive teams even worse on that end of the floor.
NOP defense was pretty decent when Adams wasn't on the floor (about 5 pp100 better), the Valanciunas upgrade there should make a pretty big difference.

Don't forget the "not Stan Van Gundy" upgrade as well. I think its a reasonable move for all three teams.

And they drafted 2 of the better wing defenders in the draft too. I think they did pretty well to get out of the hole they dug themselves with Bledsoe/Adams

The Griffin question/tangent was a bit of a nonseqitur. I think he's probably going to waste this cap space on overpaying Kyle Lowry to sneak into the playoffs to save his job rather than building a long-term team around Zion though, & just muck things up more.

Clearing cap space is only good if you do good things with your cap space.
good call, the Pels fumbled their one good move

don't like letting Lonzo Ball just waltz out of there to sign Davonte Graham

It's pretty silly, but at least they lost the Lowry lottery.

Maybe Zion just hates other players who have the letter 'z' in their name.

He was an RFA, thin market, and Duncan freakin’ Robinson just got 90 million!
The league has always paid for offense rather than defense. The second most valued offensive skill now is the ability to shoot a high percentage off of screens/movement. The 18M per, while high, is not a complete shock. Its exactly what Hollinger reported in the days leading up to free agency.

Lol Paschall makes $1.8M.... he reduced their tax bill by 11.9M

That’d be nice if they were planning on leaving Paschall’s roster spot open, but I’m pretty sure that’s not the plan. More likely the trade will end up costing them another $5M+, since even a minimum contract is $500K to $1M more than what EP was making.

The writing has been on the wall for this move for a while. It’s an issue of roster spots, not $$: the Ws were up to 14 guaranteed contracts with the additions of Kuminga and Moody; and still want to add a vet backup C and PG. Paschall had a promising rookie season with flashes of some nice skills, but wore out his welcome last season by coming into camp out of shape (mostly covid’s fault) and failing to rework his funky looking three point shot or improve his poor defense. With the additions of Porter Jr., Bjelica, and Kuminga he was effectively made redundant.

It ends up being wins all around, imo, since in Utah he likely gets to fill in some of the minutes they lost with the departure of Favors, plus gets to reunite with his old Westchester County BFF Spida…

Yowza!! That’s nuts! I’d imagine they would try to find an OKC to take Looney’s $5.2m off their hands and replace him with a Cousins or Kaminsky at the vet min.
Nah. Both Lacob and Myers have said they're tightening the belt a little — they're not gonna re-sign Oubre to a $20M+ deal and push over $400M in payroll + taxes, for example. But I doubt they'll sweat the $2M delta between Loon (whom Kerr adores) and a vet min guy, even if that balloons to $10M with taxes.

I do think it's possible they leave TPMLE unused and go cheap with the last two roster spots, though. They need one more big and a vet backup PG; and Marquese Chriss and Gary Payton II may fit those bills better than any of the more expensive options remaining.

I'm with you guys on being bummed about whiffing on Patty Mills, tho...

It would make sense to leave at least one roster spot open for a vet pickup mid season. There really isn’t a need to carry a 15th man who wouldn’t serve a purpose until you know what holes need to be filled. Oh and I always thought Paschal sucked even as a rookie putting up some numbers in 30-point losses....sorry, it’s how I feel.

Dumb luxury tax question. Who gets the money?

Distributed to all other teams? Only non-tax teams? Adam Silver trust fund?

173M tax for 1 season?? Holy moly. I want some.

Half is split among non-tax teams
Half goes to the league for "league purposes" which is ill defined but basically it goes into the coffers and they use it for anything the league spends money on

That's a hell of a Christmas party the league can have. Although in lieu of payment Lacob and Myers should just offer to fly all the league employees cross country to French Laundry and put them up at a five star hotel. Still only a small fraction of their luxury tax bill.

I've thought about this trade way too much.

Grayson Allen seems like whinier Sam Merrill with more playing time & less rangz.

I wonder if you’re more likely to roll consecutive 0/00 in roulette than you are to watch those two make that many consecutive three pointers

In less jest, one thing that is remarkable about watching NBA players warm up or mess around in the gym is how many shots even bad shooters make when uncontested and without pressure. Jabari video last year aside, these guys are all outrageously good

The other thing is that these two are shooting with the best possible backgrounds rather than in an NBA arena. That makes a world of difference as well.

Simmons working on three point shooting with Rondo. Sixers’ first round pick Jaden Springer working with former Fultz skills trainer Keith Williams. Sixers fans are tortured year round.

Rondo is a great guy to work with. He truly rebuilt his shooting ability.

He was a .263 shooter from 3 through his first 9 seasons.... .359 in his next 6 on much higher volume.

Simmons taking threes in practice is so three years ago. Wake me up when he's taking three shots outside of the paint per game.

I mean, his form is pretty good. I saw him do the same thing at a Sixers practice. He gets into games and the brain locks down.
Gonna be that way until he's in a different uni ... then Philly fans will be cranky that he never did that in Philly, missing the point completely

Playoff Rondo at 38% from three in his post Celtics career.

Jason Kidd seems like a great guy. Read the twitter thread.

Yeah, some of those excerpts were in a preview of the book that ran on The Ringer last month. The story about Maker not having an iPhone was really alarming into his mentality.

Kidd has a thing where I think other great players respect his determination and obsession with success and perfection; so he will always have a role in the league. He's proven to be a pretty lousy head coach and I think it comes down to his style and demeanor not being appropriate for anyone who isn't a star player. The best coaches are able to understand the different personalities on their roster and figure out what motivations are necessary to get the most out of them. Kidd just seems like a simple hardass and I'm sure his heavy-handed approach appeals to superstars, who often feel like they need someone to come in and motivate teammates so they can try as hard as the superstar tries.

I don’t want to say stuff like this is the norm......but I’d guess that it had occurred with many coaches who have lost their teams over the years.
