If this ESPN page is correct, the median NBA salary is $4m. That is much, much lower than I anticipated. If I were motivated, I'd probably want to know the median salary of players not on rookie contracts.

This number is misleading with the 15 man rosters. Does it even include two-ways as well?
Must have some players who have been cut or are 2 ways since it has 481 players and only 450 make main rosters (and some teams have empty 15th spots).

If we assume the top 450 are the league's rostered players (it isn't but it's close since most guys at the bottom are 2nd round and vet min)then the median is $4.5M.

That's a better estimate, but my prior expectation was around 10m. But I guess it makes sense that the median salary would be 40% of the average salary.

Well you have a bunch of 2nd rounders, plus all the guys on minimums dragging the number down. I would guess the average once you take out vet minimums it's probably close to 10M.

THere are 126 players making 10M a year or more. And probably a good 40-50 more minimum who would be if they weren't on rookie scale.

Rotten Apple
Quite a few rumors going around right now about Suns owner Robert Sarver about alleged incidents and possible NBA actions relating to that but nothing has been officially reported yet.

That's a tough blow since Chicago was really counting on him to guard other team's best players. Not a lot of defense guys on that team.

The Bulls are another key injury away from having some real problems. Their top unit is really good but depth is an enormous drop off if they begin losing guys.

Are you trying to say starting Jevonte Green is less than ideal?

Saw an article implying Green would move into starting lineup and couldn’t believe it.

Obviously the current version of Javonte isn’t NBA timber but he has the upside to grow with his elite measurables if he figures out the nuances of the game…….learning how to shoot would be helpful and something he can maybe learn.

SUns declining Jalen Smith's 3rd year option. Took him 10th 2 years ago.

man, they have had a couple hits (Ayton at 1, Booker at 13) but otherwise, here is their drafting in the lottery after Booker excluding Ayton:
2016- #4 and #8... got... Dragan Bender, Marquese Chriss
2017- #4 got Josh Jackson
2019- traded from 6 to 11 for Cam Johnson (not bad)
2020- #10 Jalen Smith

Ouch. Imagine this same Suns team with Tyrese Haliburton (the obvious, by-the-book choice at #10) in place of Smith. Especially with CP3 soon to age out...

They have been good at picking outside of the top ten for some reason, but have really whiffed on the better picks. It's a very strange record indeed; they also took TJ Warren #14 in 2014 and also drafted Bogdan Bogdanovic but traded him to Sacramento before he came over as part of a package that led to the Chriss pick.

This is really surprising. Unless this guy is a complete dink off the court, seems impossible they've seen enough to move on.

You'd think at least some rebuilding team would've traded for him as a lottery ticket. Now he's worth nothing to those teams either.

If it's another Sarver cost cutting measure, good grief. Just sell the team dude.

Two years is a long time to evaluate when you see a guy working with you every day. It’s def not a good sign for Smith’s career that the Suns so clearly gave up on him. I’m sure there are stories and most not good. Smith is due around $11m for next two years for a guy who hasn’t been able to sniff the rotation……I wouldn’t point to cost cutting in this case.

They haven't paid the tax in 12 years. Maybe Smith is a mess off the court, but I have never heard even rumors, and it's less than a calendar year since he was drafted

It's been less than 1 year though. It could be he's a disaster, but it's very rare for a guy this high not to get his option picked up, usually if you really don't believe in the guy you can at least get something for him in a trade this early.

Edit- and that 1 year has been a messy one where there has been less practice and development time than usual.. and no G-League for PHX, because Sarver sold it because he's a cheap bastard.

They drafted him 11 months ago

It's a curious move because given the structure of PHO (almost all contracts at the minimum or large), one would think that they would have re-signed Stix simply to use him as a way to get another asset (as suggested by Bright Side of the Suns earlier this summer here: https://www.brightsideofthesun.com/2021/7/26/22593172/phoenix-suns-trade-jalen-smith-is-a-movable-asset-nba-trade-option).

Maybe they can get something for him this year but one would think that they could have exercised the option and traded him into space for even a second round pick as opposed to just letting him go.

Seems like a money issue to me.

To be fair, that year 1, no one had G league. Maybe it would make a difference this year.

Smith was a reach at 10 but just call OKC, they'd probably give you something for him

He is but the hoody isn't doing him any favors either.

edit: He's not doing himself any favors either. I'm not trying to downplay how big he is. He is.

It's tough to get anything for him now.

If he shows he can't play, then you let him walk after the season. If he shows he can play, or at least some promise, you can't afford him and he walks.

Once the option is turned down, he has no value.

agreed, he has little value now. They should have called this summer, they probably knew then they were going down this road

If Olshey gets yeeted from his job, you have to think the chances of a Blazer rebuild increase. What that means is entirely unclear but away from Beal, this is the trade situation to watch from my end. Maybe nothing happens, maybe they simply move McCollum but there is always a chance that they kick the tires on Dame.

I know many here are concerned with the holes in his game, his size and age but any team that believes its close should be asking about him.

Yup. Will be interesting to see what happens if Portland falters a bit in the early stretches of the season.

Who are the 3 point guards? Haliburton, Mitchell and? Is Simmons counting Fox or am I missing a trade? Really hard to criticize them for the Haliburton pick, Mitchell... Ok.

I'll never really get over the Kings having their best season in 15 years in the one year that we had their draft pick. Other than 2019, they've averaged 28 wins per season since their last playoff appearance (2006). If they had 28 wins in 2019, we would have been in line for the 5th pick in the draft (it was the Hawks pick, ended up being #8).

Yes, but: the fact that they made a whole bunch of other terrible decisions doesn’t preclude the fact that Walton was an idiot and a credibly accused date rapist who was never head coach material in the first place. That they stuck with the dumbest coach in the league even after he was credibly accused of rape is very Kangz, though. (And further evidence of how good it is to be white, male, and from a famous family.)

Yeah i dont know simmons "take" here. Luke Walton was objectively bad and overrated pretty much out the gate.

I'm glad they finally read that reminder post it on their monitor to fire him.

the Haliburton pick was fabulous. Mitchell, the jury is out and if they turn Fox into Simmons (like they should) it will be off the charts

not matching/trading Bog was a head-scratcher

TT is a nothing burger move, they needed a backup Center, I guess we could nitpick there since Tristan is playing behind Lens. I do wish the C's ended up with Delon Wright, but let's see what the TPE turns into

Yeah but Fox was picked before the Doncic draft. He was in the same draft as Tatum. Simmons said the Kings wasted 3 lottery picks on PGs after the Doncic draft. Plus ending up with Fox and Haliburton is a good haul for a 5th, 12th and 9th pick. Mitchell the jury is out on. Those 3 picks are not why the Kings suck.
