Volpe and Arias are probably untouchable but Peraza and/or Sweeney/Vargas are possible. NY has a lot of tempting young pitching too.
I don't know how to value those guys. Would Gleyber or Voit likely be part of an expanded deal like that? Gleyber, Peraza +? Or is Gleyber too expensive for the A's now too?

Good question but the A’s have to pay someone and if you subtract Bassitt (already gone), Olson and Manaea, they are down to around $60M for 2022, so showcasing Gleyber and/or Voit (both in the $5-6M range this year and control through 2024) as the right side of their infield for a season or so seems like it could be something they’d potentially go for, in addition to prospects obv.

Everson Pereira is another compelling possible trade chip, very talented and promising young CF who was just #69 (nice) on the ESPN prospect list, but also is already on NY's 40 man roster and probably still 2-3 years away.

NY has moved a lot of their excess prospects and another big deal involving guys like Peraza and/or Wells and/or Gil would start to really impact the top levels of the system, but I think Cashman can thread the needle by helping the current go-for-it edition while keeping the still 3-5 years away hopeful position player core intact:

Anthony Volpe: SS, 21 in a month, will likely start 2022 in AA.
Jasson Dominguez, CF (eventual RF?). turned 19 a month ago, will start 2022 in low A or high A.
Roderick Arias, SS, turns 18 in September, just signed in January as the #1 international prospect.
Brandon Mayea, CF, turns 17 in September, is expected to sign with NY in January as this year's #1 international prospect.

Everson Pereira could be in here too if he survives, a CF born the same month as Volpe (April 2001, Volpe is 18 days younger) and outhit him as teammates with Hudson Valley in the second half of 2021 as Volpe was charging up the prospect lists:

Volpe: .978 OPS in 256 PAs, 15 HRs in 213 ABs
Pereira: 1.030 OPS in 127 PAs, 14 HRs in just 108 ABs (!!!!)

Pereira already being on the 40 man now is going to hurt his chances of sticking around, but if he does, he has huge upside also, #69 as I said above in Kiley McDaniel's recent ESPN prospect list.

If they want Olson, the A's are gonna ask and probably press hard for a couple of those names. I just don't think they have interest in Voit or Gleyber like we thought, so maybe give the A's what they need from this pool and try to replenish a bit with Voit and Gleyber elsewhere.

I might not have been clear but NY has plenty of 'older' prospects to move if they choose, hitters and pitchers both. As best I understand, even if they wanted to, they couldn't really trade any of that group of four anyway now except Volpe, Mayea hasn't even signed yet, Arias just signed, Dominguez they could trade but that would be a terrible precedent with Mayea still pending as well as any other int'l signings they have in the works, guys presumably committing in part specifically to be Yankees since any team can offer the same money NY has.

Also NY could move guys like Gleyber and Green and Voit elsewhere like you said if the A's didn't want them and get back more prospects to add in, but I think even without that, NY certainly easily has enough to get the Olson/Manaea combo platter without including Volpe or Dominguez, if that is their goal.

Also I don't think we have much idea who has interest in Gleyber or how available Cashman has ever made him, he is certainly long been very available in my own trade proposals but I do not see his name rumored much still. He was #8 on the Fangraphs Trade Value list in August 2020 (https://blogs.fangraphs.com/2020-trade-value-1-to-10/), he just turned 25 and is healthy and under contract for three more years.

I thought he looked like he could be a great defensive 2B when he first came up (I namechecked Roberto Alomar even, the ground he covered in every direction was remarkable) before they pushed him to SS (where he never looked comfortable), both he and DJ would probably be better on separate teams, both starting 2Bs if at all possible. I would recommend trading DJ but he has no value on his current deal plus a full no-trade, so Gleyber is the only real possibility. They could trade Gio and move DJ to 3B, but Gio is decidedly better defensively (and can play SS) so that seems dumb.

Sorry for all the posts, I am amped up as not only is baseball season actually starting, but this seems like it will be a pivotal day or week for the Yankees, a lot of directions Cashman can go, potentially huge moves that could break any time.

I've convinced myself that DJ is going to be great this year and will have plenty of ABs moving around the diamond in the utility role the Yankees originally envisioned for him.

Although I'm sure there will be enough injuries that it won't play out exactly like that.

I think Freeman is the move that shakes the market for big free agents. When LA or NYY decide they can’t get him, they rush for Olson, which is what I’m assuming the A’s are waiting for to get the best offer. Yankees won’t get Freeman AND Correa so that market is stalled also.

Just my guess but feels like those 3 players’ fate is tied to each other at the moment. Same with Rizzo

And Story also, agree that Freeman’s decision might get them all moving.

NY just signed 1B Ronald Guzman to a minor league deal. This is notable because Guzman is still 27 and absolutely obliterated NY in his rookie season, a 1.482 OPS career vs NY and a 1.500 OPS in Yankee Stadium, including this three HR game:

https://www.mlb.com/news/ronald-guzman-hits-three-home-runs-vs-yankees-c289760164

This quote is not ideal:

"It may have been even more rewarding coming against the Yankees. Guzman was a Red Sox fan growing up in the Dominican Republic -- Manny Ramirez was his favorite player -- and he has fond memories of watching with his maternal grandfather on television when Boston and New York would battle.

"I want to kill them every time I play them, to be honest," Guzman said. "I never liked the Yankees growing up, just the fact that every Dominican who is a Yankee fan, they are so loud and they talk so much. Now I know they hate me, but I'm happy about it.""

And this is impressive, although this was all back in 2018 (when he was 23):

"Guzman has six home runs in four games against the Yankees this season. He hit three in three games in Arlington back on May 21-23 and did not play Thursday night. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Guzman is the first player to hit home runs in his first four career games against the Yankees."

Whoa, one more:

"He is the youngest player to hit three home runs in one game in the Bronx since Mickey Mantle (23 years, 205 days) on May 13, 1955, against the Tigers."

NY with a pretty big hole at C for the moment but I love Kiner-Falefa as a placeholder for Peraza/Volpe.

Donaldson is on a 2/46 deal through 2023, him and IKF make about $28M between them. Gio and Gary were making about $14.5M so that has NY around $237M currently. I think they're pretty clearly out on Correa and Story now and will likely push hard for an Olson/Manaea deal.

That also makes me think Gleyber will/would be part of an OAK trade.

I'm happy with this. A change of scenery would do Sanchez good, and I won't be surprised at all if he turns things around in Minnesota. But I'm most happy about IKF. I like the player a lot and I like the Yankees being out on Story and Correa even more.

Edit: I'm really not worried about Higgy holding that job down. I won't be surprised if they add a veteran catcher, but I have confidence in Higgy. I think the pitchers do too.

I imagine Cashman is working on a Wilson Contreras trade right about now.
I highly doubt it, Contreras is another offense over defense catcher with just one year left. I think they will add someone like Jeff Mathis or Austin Hedges (historic comparisons, I don't know who fits that bill and is available right now).

Any thoughts on the Donaldson part of the deal apart from the money?
Thought he was kind of an asshole, but now he is our asshole. He has shockingly solid offensive numbers in recent years, I thought he had badly fallen off but not the case.
