Harden looks bad, like he's lost a step. Maybe he'll regain it as the season goes along, loses some weight and regains sharpness, but it wouldn't be the first time a severe hamstring injury permanently left a player slower. If so, he's cost himself a ton of money by not signing the extension. He is at the age where players generally lose a step or two anyway, and post-injury he looks like he doesn't have that first step to get past defenders anymore.
Meh he’ll be fine so long as he continues playing that lockdown defense.

great piece...I'm kind of loving the Cavs and, especially, the Mobley-Allen combo. So much fun, and Garland was a guy I was way behind when he got drafted. Those 3 are a nice core.
CLE is an interesting team to watch if only bevause their Big 3 works defensively. I thought they'd win way more than the predicted 20-something games.

In other news, I didn't see the game but the box score has Kemba as -10 in 15 minutes but Derrick Rose +31 in 30 minutes. That seems hard to achieve. (Fournier was -13 in 24 minutes.)

When Kemba's 3pt% returns to normal, Thibs will have a hard time starting him

Who knew that a Kemba/Evan backcourt would be a nightmare? Imagine having a defensive-minded coach like Thibs, thinking over the summer about personnel that would be a good fit for his system and saying, “Ya know, Kemba and Evan would be great fits for what Thibs likes to run.” This is right up there with Ime handing the keys to run the team over to Smart.

They were eliminated by ATL last year because they didn’t have enough offense around Randle, so Fournier and then Kemba on a cheap deal are attempted answers to that. The oddest move they made was keeping Burks over Bullock, but they didn’t know they’d end up with Kemba at that point. It’s definitely a problematic roster overall, filled with good score-first offensive players who are bad at defense and don’t create shots for others. Thibs has his work cut out for him figuring out a closing lineup, but the deep roster should still win a bunch.

Reading about how the NY media was hammering Randle in the post-game presser on their lack of defensive intensity after Rubio and Mobley dropped 63 of the Cavs 126 in the blowout loss. This is where I wish some NBA players were more like NFL deva wideouts and respond with, “You guys want to see defense? How do you expect to see defense when you replace two plus defenders in Elfrid and Bullock only to get Fournier and Kemba then when one goes down we get Derrick’s old 45-yr old corpse? C’mon man! Next question.”

Cole Anthony was thought to be overrated and a contender to be a bust at this level. I didn’t buy that bc I heard crazy stories about his work ethic. Guys who refuse to fail often times don’t and he had the advantage of growing up seeing first hand what it takes to make it at this level. Now we are talking about a Most-Improved Player front runner putting up 20/7/6 to start the year.

That was an impressively short period of time between HRB calling them MyCavs, and then jinxing the fuck out of them.
:D

They will be fine. I’m meh on Sexton, he’s ok just nothing special, and thing he may be their third best guard behind Garland then gap to Rubio.

Has a 2nd year player ever won MIP? Seems to go against the nature of the reward.

edit: A bunch but most were at the beginning of the awards life. Last 2 were Arenas and Monta.

If he continues to shoot 41% from three on 8 attempts per game, he is probably going to win MIP.

Miles Bridges wants a word with you.

Tyler Herro. Quite a few guys. It'll be an interesting award this year if a bunch of players keep up their early pace. Cole is definitely one of them.

Franz Wagner is also a lot better than I thought he would be, which wasn't much better than his brother.

Steph v Ray all-time threes made:

-99 regular season
+85 playoffs
+12 play-ins
====
-2 total

For anyone who likes to combine reg season and playoffs, Steph likely becomes the all-time threes king tonight (in 586 fewer games). Everyone else will have to wait another 20 games or so.

Grayson Allen, Ricky Rubio and Andre Drummond have close to 30 seasons in the NBA combined, also all had career games or close in the last week or two against the Knicks.

on the one hand that is dangerous and has no place and he should be suspended...

on the other.. Morris probably deserved it, he's a trash person and player.

Looked like he fouled Jokic hard for no reason then Jokic came back on him when he tried to walk away.

Jokic shouldn't have done it because he will get suspended, but Markieff took a hard foul on Jokic out of frustration because Denver was kicking their ass, and Jokic knocked him on his ass. No problem with it. Fuck the Heat.

Curry is at 42 (abusing Kevin Huerter like a...) about to go into the fourth vs the Hawks so you know he is going to play down the stretch

My favorite part of that whole thing... Jimmy Butler standing right next to Jokic saying nothing.

Then when Jokic is being lead out and there are 15 people between them he suddenly starts yelling about meeting him in the back.

Jimmy Butler is a KG level fake tough guy,

Steph made Huerter question his whole raison d'être in the 3rd Q.
That last shot with Cam Reddish french kissing him as he fell out of bounds backwards was just diabolical. He is the most fun player in the NBA for me and its not even close. His career has been an absolute joy.

That was a dirty hit by Morris and he was [rightfully] ejected for it, but Jokic is big fucking baby who lashes out HARD when he's upset, and that's pretty damn dangerous when you're one of biggest players in the league. It wasn't that long ago that he was ejected for this:

Who was the last league MVP to be ejected for flagrant fouls twice in less than a dozen games?

This was a punking of epic proportions, someone has to at least try to tackle Jokic there and let it get broken up, where is their pride?

They know how much it would cost them. A 30-game suspension for Butler is worth like $15m.

Fucking Lakers. Monk hits a half court three pointer on a broken play at the 3rd quarter buzzer. Lakers up 7, a 15 point turnaround in last 5 minutes or so of game play fueled by Rondo.

I was thinking about that when I saw the Booker video. His instinct is to run in, Joker is like "What do you want" and Booker gets the fuck out of there. Very mature behavior. I only learned that Joker was a head case when the Cs were out there last year for a Sunday afternoon game and he was dominant (looked like one of the best guys I ever saw in my life) until a couple of calls didnt go his way and it broke him mentally and then the Cs blew Denver out.

Yeah, that was eye-opening for me. Malone actually took him out of the game before it was over (down 14 with 4:41 left), and I distinctly remember him getting frustrated with Grant's defense, then winding up and heading towards Tatum as the latter passed him down the court. Thankfully for all he didn't swing, but that moment stood out live to me. You can see it here, at 6:15

The full Westbrook tonight in LA. A triple double, 7 turnovers, an ill-advised technical foul, and a bricked free throw in last two minutes. Lakers gag away a 14 point lead and are on to OT.

Also, if the ref hadn't had a super quick TO call he fouled Lamelo on the rebound with 1.3 seconds left, legit was 50/50 if the ref should give CHA a timeout, or 2 free throws to win the game

Yes, I just thought my list was getting too long. I also missed the backcourt violation.
Hugely entertaining player, especially when he’s killing the team I hate.

I was driving home listening to that entire sequence while thinking, “Damn this is so much better than the play-by-play line I posted in his last game!” He is the gift that continues to give.

The best was the technical foul with the Lakers up 9 and the game pretty much in the bank. Ball was fouled and Carmelo and Westbrook started complaining - possibly about whether Ball should have been going to the line. So Carmelo decided to stroll across the lane while Ball is in the middle of his shot. Technical foul on Carmelo and a second delay of game. That’s when Russ decides that 4 free throws isn’t enough of a gift and decides he needs to get a T of his own. Ball drains all 5 and suddenly it’s a game. (That, regrettably, the Lakers just won)
