Almost akin to Parcells taking the Patriots Head Coaching job and giving the team a sense of legitimacy.
Sort of. In this scenario, though, there’s a chance that when he leaves the team has
1. A somewhat messy cap situation
2. No long term answer at the most important position
So, while they might benefit from the legitimacy, they might burn it quickly without an adequate long term plan.

You mean just like Parcells???
Eh... the Patriots signed Parcells for the long term. Brady is a decidedly short term solution for any team.
The team That signs Brady has to think of what kind of dead money they’re willing to take when Brady’s finished and who is gonna play the position when he leaves.
Do they use a high draft pick to groom a replacement, or do they trade away draft picks to make a run while he’s playing?

And thats part of this too right.

IF Team X takes on an "onerous" Brady contract. The plus is they will be successful next year. (else why else would Brady go there, and why would they sign him.) The minus is they have no QB on staff that they feel offers even close to above average starter quality (else again why Brady). And if they are winning they will not get those awesome draft slots to get his replacement.

Is it possible that they find a guy with pick 28 or 56 or 84. But the Odds are drastically reduced compared to if your picking 1st or 4th.

Brady really does hamstring his next team (even the pats). Too good to get the kind of picks you need to be prepared for after he leaves.

it sucks but another team taking brady for 1 or 2 years of moderate to good success (Conf title say ) while "allowing" us to bite the bullet now....suck for a year or 2 and rebuild talent up and down the roster (hopefully including a next gen QB), might be the Patriots best option for the pats 2020s as a whole.

Really? What if your response is to millions of people instead of one (or the few hundred or so followers your friend has). That makes it much more deliberate, no?
My read of several years of celebrities using social media is that they don’t treat it much, if any, differently than anyone else. YMMV.

That's the type of claim you make so that, if what most people expect does happen, you can claim FCP; and, if it doesn't happen, you can follow up with "Brady shocked people around the NFL ..."

What a great final “evil” Patriots move it would be if Brady has already agreed to come back for, say, 2 years at like $1mm per. And his press conference involves simply him repeatedly asking free agents to come take the newly “found” cap space.

....and then after retiring, he takes an “ambassador” role with the team for $25mm per.

I refuse to believe Tom leaves. I don’t believe it can happen.
Based on the poll, around 80 percent of SoSH also believes Tom will not leave.

But I suspect that those poll results might look somehwat different if people had the chance to vote again today.

I'm in the camp that believes he will lkely leave. I say that because it seems that all want him to, or at least are resigned to the fact that he will, test the market a bit. And then all it takes is one team that Tom can convince himself has a chance to contend for the SB to offer him substantially more than the Pats want to play, thereby giving Brady a very hard thing to say no to.

I agree with you. I think someone will bowl him over with an offer.
I don't know if I am rationalizing it but I would prefer him to go off the cliff with some other team. Do we really want to see the day that Belichick has to bench him? Because he will.

I guess he'd have contacts, but he's a Minneapolis reporter...be interesting to hear how he has contacts in Vegas/Oakland/NE when no one else has that.

Vegas makes non-football sense for most of the reasons LA does - get fans excited, fill the stadium, etc.

The big issue with Vegas is their WR corps. This rumor makes the rumor that the Raiders have been back in touch with AB make more sense.

Particularly when filling the stadium might rely heavily on fans from out of town

The Patriots aren't beating that if that's mostly guaranteed.
Anything the Pats do will have to be heavy on signing bonus with some void years to manage the cap number. Bigger question is years... if another team will effectively guarantee 3 years which allows Brady to go til 45, will Bill be willing to go there?

I'd be shocked if they have any trouble filling that stadium for at least a few years no matter who the QB is, it's Vegas and the NFL, pretty sure they sold out the entire 2020 season through PSLs already

If Fitz, OBJ, and AB teamed up with Gronk and Brady, with Josh Jacobs, for two years, I could probably get behind that. Who wouldn’t tune into that Vegas matchup each week?

I wouldn’t feel as bad about him slighting us. To go to NYG or Miami...ugh. Tacky. To go to Vegas? Human.

If Gronk comes back to play with Brady and it’s not in NE, I will personally be devastated.

Also Gronk isn’t a FA so the Pats control his rights.

Hey, if TB signs with Vega$ I'll wish him all the best. And if BB traded Gronk's rights to Vegas and got a few draft picks, even better. I think Raider draft picks in the 2021-2023 range are going to be quite valuable if they plan to pay 25 million a year for Brady's farewell tour.

We saw that movie before in Kansas City in the early 90s.

Those early 90s Kansas City teams were pretty good. The 1993 team went to the AFC Championship Game. If not for a concussion by Joe Montana early in the second half, it is possible that they could have defeated the Bills to advance to the Super Bowl.

It will definitely be interesting to see what happens with Brady and the Pats.

I'd be both surprised and personally disappointed if Brady took a big-money deal to play in Vegas. I get why he might and he has earned the right to choose whatever he wants for the end of his career.....a thousand times over. As a fan it would be sad to see him elsewhere, and moreso if it is somewhere that isn't 100% about winning and Vegas wouldn't be.

Montana was having a bad game even before the concussion.

Anything happening with the Raiders? I turn on the TV this morning, it’s on a Bay Area news show, in the middle of a sports segment I and see Tom throwing a TD pass to Phillip Dorsett. Catches my eye and the commentator says if a trade does happen, some other players would have to move; Derek Carr is due about 20 million this year. That was it. Looks like a nothing speculation from the lack of anything here, my one-stop shopping Pats and Red Sox site.

Carr's contract is tradable/cuttable.

Reiss:

5. No movement on Brady talks:
It is officially one month until the start of the March 16 legal tampering period when teams can negotiate with representatives for upcoming free agents, which narrows the timeline for Brady, Kraft and Belichick to come together and have the all-important meeting to set the table for whether Brady will be back in New England. The Patriots are expected to seek clarity on Brady's intentions before the start of free agency on March 18, because his decision will have a significant trickle-down effect on the team's overall plans. With no movement to date, I’m sticking with 80% odds on Brady's return at this time.

Until we hear about a 3-year offer from another team, I will stick with Brady's coming back.

Good. Personally, I think the best way the Patriots could respect Brady would be to invite him into the roster creation process. Give him some input on the personnel decisions, and ask him to try and recruit players to come to New England. It would be a huge sign of respect for him, probably be a very tough pill for BB to swallow, but could be a good experience for all involved. Brady gets a lesson in the realities of roster creation, and also comes back (I assume) on a team friendly deal. The gang all stays together for pursuit of ring #7. How's that for a nice story?

They had, maybe the best offensive line in the league in 2018 and then the center got blood clots and the new left tackle, who was looking very good, got hurt. Their fullback who was also very good, also got hurt. They brought in maybe the most talented wide receiver in the league. Guys got hurt and an acquisition didn't pan out. He might go to some other team and find that guys get hurt there too. Taking up a bigger portion of the cap won't help.

The best coach ever is going to do his best to put the best possible team on the field that he can. Either you trust that or you don’t.

In any given year you are always going to find teams that are getting major production from players that take a disproportionately low amount of the cap, and some teams that have less cap flexibility. I have little doubt that for a player with a short window who is in relatively decent demand, a favorable cap team can be found. If that is his sole criteria, there is nothing the Patriots can do really.

Assuming some of this noise is actually coming from Brady and isn’t just media nonsense, what is he actually saying? He isn’t a dumb guy. He understands the cap. Is this just code for “convince me you are willing to mortgage future cap years”?

I think it's his way of saying, "I'm not asking for $30 million a year. I'm asking for a better team around me." I think he understands the cap situation quite well and knows that every dollar he takes is a dollar they can't spend on other talent. He's in it to win it, not to take home the most money.

I expect a 2-year contract at around $23-25 million a year, with the rest of the money going to upgrade key offensive positions.
