He's 29 made only 14 appearances last year (1 goal 1 assist), 28 appearances the year before (7 goals 6 assists Haller by comparison had 20/12 in 40 in the same league) and his wages are immense. He's had a bunch of knee injuries and doesn't look the same player anymore.

Here's an interesting question.... would you rather have James Rodriguez or Felipe Anderson next year? (Gotta be close, and Anderson might not even start for West Ham).
I was looking at it more as “World Cup Hero -> Real Madrid -> Bayern Munich -> Everton.” There’s a pretty steep drop off there.

That one shocks me more than James. Is Allan not good anymore? Even the price seems shockingly low for someone who I would have killed for at United a few seasons ago.

The rumor is that Allan wanted out and essentially wanted to go to Everton to reunite with Ancelotti. He was still performing at a high level last year, and seems less risky of a signing than James (but James has to be a big upgrade on Sigurdsson, even if he isn't at the level he used to be). Ancelotti seems to be paying dividends in terms of recruitment.

If they've really managed to sign Allan and James, and get Doucoure too, they can field a really formidable side and even have some depth in midfield. Richarlison clearly enjoys playing for Everton, but I think this is their last shot to go for it with Richarlison, Digne and Calvert-Lewin. If they miss Europe again they are going to have to start selling, but if they get these signings done I think they have a good shot at it.

If they stay relatively healthy, I think Everton will be in the mix for the 5th-7th places. Not playing in Europe is going to be a big advantage over other squads in that bracket both in terms of fresher legs but also Carlo being able to drill his squad and play the same first 11 every weekend (injuries notwithstanding).

Agree with Rwill and MMS. Richy and DCL were a very good 1-2 punch for the better part of last season. The back 4, while flaky, was mostly sound, with Mason Holgate emerging as a legit stud- should have been called up for England ahead of Keane. Midfield was awful. With Allan, James and maybe Doucoure, and Gbamin hopefully coming back from injury, thats a squad capable of challenging for Europa IF they’re healthy, if James has anything left, and if Pickford can grow up.

James might be toast. But he and Carlo can stand i the dressing room and say we were together at Real, we were together at Munich, we won lots of silverware, you jerks better STFU and learn how it’s done, that’s what the club needs right now as anyone who watched them get bullied by Klopp’s academy kids in the FA Cup Cantrell you.

I’m just happy Everton have made enough signings for ocst to list them about 5 spots too high in the prediction thread.

one of my favorite events of every preseason.

Various news reports have United signing Donny Van Beek from Ajax. Only time I saw him play was last seasons champions league.

there seems to be different opinions on where his best role is. 10, 6, 8 etc... but everyone agrees that the quality is there for a special player. At the very least he is a great depth signing when Bruno or Pogba need a rest, or could we be seeing the diamond midfield formation again?

Wow. Interesting. He’s a fantastic player - well rounded in the Dutch/Ajax tradition. He’s also still only 23, but with 150+ senior appearances including a deep run in the UCL.

He’s a CM, so he’s likely direct competition with Fred. DvdB isn’t a defensive stalwart, though he presses very hard. He’s not a string-puller/tempo-setter, much more direct. He’s like Naby Keita in a lot of ways - can cover box-to-box, but with the ball, he’s always pushing things into a more dangerous position whether by dribble or pass.

DvdB is a fantastic addition to any club, will be curious to see how Ole deploys him.

Rakitic to Sevilla for 1.5M with 10M in potential escalators. Happy for Raki. Will always be one of my favorite Barca players of all time. He was immense on the '15 treble-winning side (scoring the opening goal in the UCL final against Juve), and kept the team near its peak for the next 3 seasons. An absolute workhorse, he fell off quite a bit after playing an ungodly amount of minutes in 2018 between EV running him into the ground and playing next to Modric and the golden Croatia side that charged into the WC final.

Beaten by seconds @67YAZ - I gotta have my coffee earlier!

Not sure if this was mentioned elsewhere, by Vidal and Inter have agreed to personal terms. It's expected (hoped?) that Barca buyout the remaining term of his contract to allow him to leave on a free. In the right system, Vidal is still valuable and I'm personally happy he's not on the Barca squad next season.

Ben White Stays! That’s great news for the club, player, and EPL really.
Indeed! Brighton and Potter have really built a great core of a squad, starting from the back. I’m not predicting anything crazy, but it would be disappointing if they can’t better 15th place (previous PL high water mark) this season.

Carlo has some pull. I'm genuinely excited about Doucoure and the others. There's a bit of congestion in the midfield now, but much less question about who the best players are.

The talk about fitting them together seems to be focusing on some interesting ideas for shape. A midfield diamond with James ahead, Allan central and Doucoure & Gomes to the left & right? James up front, on the right with Richy & DCL, in a 4-3-3?

I'm interested to see what comes of this.

West Ham selling Grady Diangana to West Brom for either 12M (with addons to 18M) or 18-20M depending who you believe. Interesting move, he's 22 and was one of West Brom's best while on loan last year. However, West Ham have a ton of wingers and no money to fix LB with, so since Lanzini and Anderson haven't attracted good bids looks like they'll sell the young prospect instead. Fans are pretty irate about it.

Diangana deal official, and the players (in particular the captain) seem not at all pleased"

Rumors for ITKs this week that neither Dianagana nor David Moyes knew anything until Sullivan had accepted the bid.

New word is that they are using the money to try and buy James Tarkowski from Burnley (which seems dumb, I don't think he's any better than the 2 starters, he'll cost 30-40M because he's English, and he has the inflation in rep because he plays on a side that packs 9 men in the box and makes CBs look far better than they are).

I'm not a West Ham fan, but I've always had a soft spot for them and I want them to succeed. With that being said, what the fuck are they thinking? They just sold a very good 22 year old player with a ton of upside for 12m pounds (18m with incentives) so that, what, they can turn around and buy a worse player for 30m?

I was really hoping West Ham would go down last season. They are a terribly run club and their owners deserve everything bad that is coming to them.

On the flip side, if Chelsea can sort out their keeping situation, they're going to be scary.

Nah, they will bid well below asking for Tarkowski, not get a deal, settle for someone cheap and say "we tried". There are mounting rumors that both owners (but particularly minority owner Gold) are in financial trouble from their outside businesses (mostly retail real estate and media) and are just trying to hold on until 2023 so they can sell the club without taking the tax hit from the stadium deal. Others claim they are actively seeking bidders now, since even a generous 400m pound sale only costs them about 30m to the LLDC by selling early. As an example, they missed payments on the Haller deal installments, and word is the Ajeti and Hugill sales went directly to making late payments for him.

I have never previously thought he would leave but the situation with David Alaba at Bayern seems potentially broken beyond repair. Uli Hoeness called his agent (Pini Zahavi) a piranha and accused him of seeking a 20m fee to broker a new contract, Zahavi has denied that, and Alaba's father has called out Bayern for spreading "dirty lies" about the situation. Maybe a situation to watch. Lots of big clubs would be interested.

All posturing until further notice. Nevertheless, every major club would probably back up the brinks for a proven 28 YO left footed CB who can do just about everything you could ask.

Apparently Barca and Lyon have come to terms for the transfer of Depay and Barca have also reached agreement with the player. However, Barca still need to sell some players (for some reason) before the deal can be consummated. Fee is speculated to be 25-30M. If this is true, that seems like reasonable business for Barca and begins the putting the Dutch back into Barca at warp speed. Since this would be reasonable, I will assume the fee will be double that or the deal falls apart because Barto refuses to sell Alena for less than 20M.

I don't really understand the Depay signing from Barca's point of view. Assuming that Suarez leaves, they need a true center forward who can lead the line, occupy the attention of the CBs, and create some space for their wingers and attacking midfielders to operate. Depay has never been that kind of CF - he has always played either LW or the second striker in a two striker system. Basically, he's a worse version of what they already have in spades.

Curious to see what the terms are if Spurs get him and United don't. Mainly, will the buy back clause still be there. If not, Woodward has truly had a shambolic window...and that's coming from someone who would take a risk on Bale if Real are paying the majority of his wages.

Hopefully if so, the rumors of Alex Telles are true.

It sounds like Tottenham will agree to the buyback clause but United won't and that is potentially the deciding factor.

I'm reading today that Juventus wants Morata from Atletico. Why?
Juventus have been looking for a target striker since Pirlo took over. Dzeko was the hottest up until this morning.

My guess is Juventus want to have an option to play crosses from the wings. Ronaldo isn't a true CF in that sense, though he's a hell of a finisher in the air. Really not sure what the game is, here.

Thanks. What makes little sense to me is that Atletico may be looking to replace Mortata with Luis Suarez. I have to imagine that Atletico needs to save money and that, simply, Suarez is cheaper than Morata.

Suarez to Juventus was all but done except he couldn't get permission to work in Italy. Funny how the pieces slide around.

I'll be interested to see how Suarez does this year. Barca and Atleti seem to have completely different perspectives on whether there is a fork sticking out of his back. Barca wants to pay him off to leave a year early even though they have no replacement for him at all and even though he is BFFs with their GOAT player that they have alienated and are desperately trying to win back. Meanwhile, Atleti seems willing to loan their best striker just to free up space to bring him in, even though he turns 34 in January.

I didn't watch Barca enough last year to have an opinion but 16 goals and 8 assists in 2000 La Liga minutes is actually a pretty decent return, not prime level but certainly nothing to scoff at.

Interesting. I don't know enough about Luis Suarez or Morata to evaluate performance, but if the players are more or less equal, I prefer Morata -- younger, gets on well with the team from what I can do, and less annoying behavior.

But I was just reading that Atletico is desperate for money and Juventus will pay $10 million for the loan.

I also think Simeone has a pretty mediocre track record in picking players, so I'm naturally doubtful.

Yeah, in Italy they have limited positions available for non-EU players, and Juventus had used its last one on...Weston McKennie.

McKinnie is terrific, they seem to love him already and as a 22 year old who is already starting in CM for them he's probably a better signing for this summer than Suarez.

Agreed, I'm just marveling that we are at a point when a traditional powerhouse in a top 4 league is choosing a 22 year old American over a former Golden Boot winner.
