2020 PGA Tour

Getting back to the actual golf...if TPC Boston had played like Olympia Fields is currently playing, it would have been so much more watchable last week. This is fun golf to watch on a good old-style course. (With the obvious caveat that it would have been nice for the PGA Tour to do something more than issue a mealy-mouthed press release, particularly given how close this week's event is to Kenosha.)

I've been watching, but it feels a little weird to be watching given what's going on in the rest of the sports world. In some ways, it's like that Thursday of The Players where the Tour plowed ahead while the rest of the world was in the early stages of COVID shutdown. Not saying the Tour should not be playing, just that it feels a little eerie watching it.

If it makes you feel any better, there are baseball games going on right now, including Milwaukee.

I don't remember much of the 2003 US Open. Can see why they played that event here.

It is nice to have the NBC guys back. Too bad Bones is on JT's bag.

There's a big difference between being paid a salary and protesting and having to earn a paycheck. I'm not saying it's right or wrong, but I can appreciate why some not not want to sit out.
In addition, this event, like most PGA tour events, raises a lot of money for charity. Not playing could compromise that cause, or at least be a disrespectful act towards those providing the charitable funds, especially without fans providing ticket revenue.

FWIW, I liked seeing Cameron Champ’s shoes on the TV. He’s being interviewed on the Golf Channel right now talking about BLM. The GC audience is probably amongst the ones that needs to hear this message the most. He can do this and play the tournament. He can also wear those shoes and talk about this stuff if he sits it out, but do as many who need to see it, well, see it?

Not sure if anyone followed the Women’s Open last weekend, but it was won by Sophia Popov. Popov has been an LPGA member for 4 years before losing her card by 1 shot in Q school prior to this season. She was grinding away on the Symetra Tour (women’s equivalent to the Korn Ferry Tour) and barely snuck into the Open field with a high finish in an LPGA event.

So she wins a major which typically gives you a 5-year exemption on Tour. Except the LPGA has a rule that non-members only get a 1-year exemption for winning a major. It’s been a bit of a story in the golf world the past few days. I guess she has an option to appeal, but her quotes seem non-confrontational and she seems to be going out of her way to not ruffle feathers.

Tiger's putting is giving me the shakes. Never seem him this out of sorts with the flat stick.

Extremely unlikely he makes it to East Lake, but I kinda wonder if he would've played had he made it. It would be his 4th tournament in 5 weeks with a major right on the horizon. They do have a week off between the TC and US Open but that's still a lot of golf for him and I'm sure he gives more of a shit for the US Open.

Having to play a ball out of a divot is probably the dumbest rule in all of professional sports.
Once again, I seem to be out of step with SoSH's golfing contingent. So much of golf is about dealing with the rub of the green and playing the ball as it lies; you can get good lies in the rough, and very occasionally you can get bad lies in the fairway, and being a good golfer is about having the mental fortitude to deal with all of them. Also, you can't always define a "divot" with 100% certainty, and the last thing we need is the Brysons of the world arguing with rules officials about whether they deserve a free drop in the fairway and slowing the game down still further.

I would have bet my life you disagreed with this!

I'm happy not to disappoint. :) In truth, I absolutely get where you're coming from, but calling it "the dumbest rule in all of professional sports" is massively hyperbolic. (For one thing, it's not even a rule; you'd have to add a rule to change the "play it as it lies" principle.)

Meanwhile...DJ. He looked like a better golfer than peak Tiger Woods for much of this tournament, and particularly during the first six holes today, I thought he was going to win this going away. And now he's scratching it around in pretty mediocre fashion. Very curious.

After DJ’s second shot on 18, Rahm looks like he’s going to win with a tremendous weekend.

Having said that, the best moment of the tournament (to me) was watching Hughes make the clutch up and down to qualify for East Lake.

That reminded me of the Morikawa JT putt off a few weeks ago......and now DJ gets some help (maybe) off a tree
