Oh, I understood and wasn't trying to be critical of your post. I just find it interesting how much everyone is focusing in on his distance and just assuming it's what's putting him over the edge (for obvious reasons) but it just doesn't make much sense to me. If it was that much of an advantage then the longest guys on tour would always win and that's just not the case. It's an advantage for sure, but not as much as it's being made out to be I think.
I think the difference is that you aren't starting with a blank slate. You're starting with a player who has already won multiple times on tour and then added considerable distance to his game. It's one tool that he didn't have, but can now add to an already impressive skill set.

We’ve got a Covid group this week. Fritelli, Watney and Denny McCarthy are playing together. They continue to test positive but the Tour amended its positive test protocol, following CDC guidelines, to allow them to play.

Apparently the player/caddie needs to have gone10-days from the first exhibiting of symptoms and also 72 hours without symptoms in order to return to play.

In his first five holes this morning, Mickelson has:
  • chipped in for birdie at 10,
  • drilled a 3-wood to 15 feet and eagled 11,
  • three-putted 12 for bogey,
  • missed the fairway 50 yards left on 13 and wedged to about 10 feet,
  • and now hit his drive on 14 (playing only 316 yards today) to about 10 feet looking for another eagle.
All extremely on brand.

That's Phil. I know he doesn't want to play the Senior Tour and he's obviously still better than a lot of the regular tour guys but I wish he would at least show up for the Senior Open. He'd be a huge draw and it would be a blast.

Golf channel cuts out. Golf coverage is the worst.
It is a weird in a time where sporting events have been very limited, they would be stuck in a position to have to cut away from the broadcast because of a rain delay. I think it was available after 6pm on the NBC Gold app, but obviously you need a subscription for that. I guess NBC's view is "Fuck you, you want to watch, pay me."(note, I have a Gold sub and I love it, but I wasn't held hostage into subscribing)

I rather doubt it was available after 6 p.m. ET on NBC Gold, insofar as I'm sure Sky Sports here in the UK would have continued to show the coverage if it had carried on, but we went dark as well.

In fairness to The Golf Channel, I'm sure they're trying to do a lot with very limited resources at the moment, so I can understand them not wanting to go overboard yesterday evening.

I saw it on the Golf Channel saying, "coverage available on NBC Gold." So I don't think I am wrong, but I stopped watching so I'm not sure. But I rather doubt your doubt.

What’s up with the change this weekend from the John Deere Classic to the Workday Charity Open?

I understand there was a need for a change of venue due to COVID-related concerns (though I’m not sure exactly what those concerns were), but I don’t understand why that necessitated a change in title sponsor. With not much going on in the sports world these days, those title sponsorships might be the best big-ticket marketing spend there is, and it’s not like John Deere has been unusually hard-hit by the pandemic, so I’d be surprised if they seized on a pretext to walk away from the sponsorship.

The Deere was canceled in May because they thought the restrictions in Illinois would make it impossible to host. This year, Workday stepped in and they are playing the same course in back to back weeks.

Deere Classic will be back next year.

Thanks.

And it didn’t occur to me until just now that one of the big benefits of sponsoring a tournament is all of the free tickets, hospitality tents and stuff. Has to be a nice thing to do for your employees, especially when you’re located in a place like the Quad Cities where the PGA tour event is probably the biggest event of the summer. So if that was Deere‘s motive for sponsoring, they probably jumped at the chance to take the year off once the logistics didn’t work out.

My dad has a long time friend who's daughter works for Travelers. Before he becomes a little less mobile from health and old age, he used to go down with them every other year or so and the guy's daughter told him about how many people worked on the tournament every year, to the point Travelers actually has a small staff of 8-10 people dedicated to nothing else but everything to do with the tournament. Even beyond employee, it's a lot of work between smaller corporate sponsors, fans, logistics, courtesy cars, lodging, etc etc.

Another missed green from JT with a wedge in his hand.

The postponed Ryder Cup probably gives Morikawa and Hovland a better chance of making their teams
