Spieth collapse in progress
He righted the ship well on his back 9 and likely will make the cut.

Morikawa's made cut streak to start his career ends and comes up short of Tiger's record. Daniel Berger's most consecutive rounds at par or better streak challenging Tiger's record is still in play for this afternoon.

Are the peeps giving updates watching on the NBC Gold access thing? Do you think it's worth it (no snark in the question)? I've been cheap and have just waiting until 3 pm to watch on Golf Channel stream.
Yes, although if you’re an Amazon Prime subscriber you can do it for a month for $9.99 to try it out. Plus the Amazon infrastructure and user experience is way better.

I’m locked into NBC until May of 2021 or else I'd be doing Amazon. It’s very much worth it for me but I’m a golf nerd and I watch it while working every Thursday/Friday. It’s great because they show so much golf.

Berger isn't playing, unless he's using a pseudonym

That was on 10...but on 9, he drove it pin high just off the green left on a 380-yard par 4. (It's a dogleg, but his drive was still something like 350-355, and he had to hit a very narrow gap at the front of the green to sneak it past rough and bunkers.) Ridiculous.
Yeah they way they presented it on tv was confusing. They showed a replay of he drive on 9 and then Nobilo jumped in to say shot link had his drive at 428. I was scratching my head when he walked up to the cart path.

He made a bogey after that break, so I laughed.

I think so. Then on the next tee box he was yelling at a group of people watching from their back yard. Next shot, a cart moved or did something while he was over the ball. Maybe it was just a group of jerks on private property.

Sneds miked up. So far we've heard a bunch of dang it and gollies.
I don't need mic'ed up golfers. I need to hear the caddy/player convos, however they get them. I don't want to hear their forced running commentary, I want to know what they're trying to do with their shot before they do it, then see how it turns out. That's the shit that's fascinating to me.

Totally agree. Like listening to Phil talking about his chip when he played with Tiger, Brady, and Manning.

The Berger shot in the playoff 2 weeks ago was a great example too. They discuss the wind and go back and forth about how it was either hurting or just straight right to left, and what the number is as a result. Then he airmails the green and you see the flag pointing straight downwind behind the green. So the miss was purely due to misreading the wind (or it changed), which was super interesting to me.

None of the commentators mentioned a word about this.

Faldo mocking the whole “fans want to head the player/caddie conversations” last week and then doubling down yesterday won’t help.

I'm all in on Phil right now. How the fuck is a 50 year old one of the 5 most entertaining/interesting guys on Tour still?
Never been a big fan, but Mickelson looks to be in the best shape I’ve ever seen him in and he’s playing like he’s 30.

Competitive Phil is good for golf.

This is going to be a fun shot from Phil
Was this the second shot on 17 where he dropped off the path?

Was hoping someone here could explain that. I understand that his closest point of relief was on the near side of the path — and I understand why he wanted an official to confirm that — I didn’t understand why he was allowed to place the ball after 2 drops when the 1st drop didn’t roll onto the path. I was also surprised that he stooped down to drop the ball, rather than standing erect and holding the ball at arm’s length (which probably would have been favorable to him, as he clearly wanted the ball to roll onto the path, which would have been more likely with a less gentle drop).

This rule changed a long time ago, I think at the start of 2019 - all drops should be made at knee height, not with the arm extended at shoulder height. (You don't see golfers drop the ball over their shoulder and behind their back, either, but that used to be the rule before the extended arm drop came into effect.)

As for the specifics of the Mickelson drop, I was watching last night's golf on a delay and fast-forwarded through the drop, but if I had to guess, maybe his first two drops bounced closer to the hole?

"Jason Day will be playing by himself today after Reporting not feeling well. Will go off the 10th tee at 9:15. Took a test, but results are pending."

Least shocking news possible in the Covid era is the news that Jason Day doesn't feel well. A pandemic is not required. But his immune system is seemingly pretty lousy, so he probably does have it. If there was a single droplet in his vicinity, even if it was 15 or 20 feet away, it probably targeted him like a hellfire missile.

If he's not feeling well he should be out immediately. I don't know why they would screw around with something like this.

Jason Day should just wrap himself in bubble wrap and come back in 2022

I didn’t see the drop in question, but if he got to place it, the ball either bounced closer to the hole, bounced out of the two club length box or did not give him complete relief from the path.

Given how hard the ground is, It’s fairly easy to “game” the drop by going to the front/edge of the drop zone (depending on the slope) which almost ensures the player will be able to place the ball.

As I write this, I’m watching Phil’s shot from inches away from the tarp on the third hole. He is a thrill-a-minute.

I thought there was some ground under repair that also factored into where Phil dropped
Yes, left of the path on the steep slope would have even the nearest point of relief, but it was ground under repair. That moved the nearest point of relief to the easier, flat spot right of the path.

He then marks that spot, has a club length semi-circle “relief area” that the ball has to remain in. Phil smartly dropped right at the left edge of that so that it hit and rolled toward the path and out of his “relief area” so he got to place it. I couldn’t tell if the ball just rolled left or also closer to the hole.

What was a little sketchy was why his nearest point of relief wasn’t closer to the cart path. It was close but there was probably half to a full foot he could have marked it closer and still have taken full relief.

Smart usage of the rules though.

Day’s robust immune system swiftly defeated the virus and his test came back negative.

Tour also said players won’t be allowed to do this going forward (saying they feel sick but playing while awaiting a test result).
