It's been an interesting day in Ponte Vedra today. Its hard to express how proud of this event the PGA Tour is. Deciding to cancel had to be really, really hard.

Odds of the Masters being canceled? Of all the kinds of sporting events that we have, I'd think that golf is the least likely to be coronavirus-problematic. Especially if they simply don't let the fans in (or severely limit the number of fans). Instead of 16,000 people packed into an arena, all sitting inches from each other, we're talking about 60 golfers and a few thousand fans (maybe) scattered over a 345-acre plot of land. There's a lot of space for social distancing. Even the athletes aren't needing at all to be up close and personal, unlike in basketball or hockey.

Plus, the Masters already has a very elite air about it, and can carefully screen everyone that comes into the place.

Also...basically no other sports are in existence right now, so the Masters would have the entire sports world watching only...their tournament.

Seems like the Masters should be doable, if any sports at this point are doable.

The main caveat is that we don't know how long our current situation - social distancing - will last. The second caveat is to point out that the goal of social distancing is to slow the spread, not eliminate it. Which means that I don't see us (as a society) returning to "normalcy" with regards to sporting events in a month. I would also point out that the odds are that many tour players have been exposed at this point and we will eventually have a confirmed case among the players. In which case, the Tour simply shuts down (or "suspends") indefinitely.

It's true that August National can do what they want, but I don't see them playing the Masters this year.

I know this is obviously way bigger than sports, but man there's going to be like NO live sports on for the foreseeable future. I thought golf (as I reasoned above) might be the one sport that could still play, but nope.

ZIP.

Thank God I have the NFL Game Pass app (and subscription) that allows me to re-watch all games (regular season and playoffs) from 2011 through 2019. That's a lot of good Pats' watching to be had.

Probably makes it easier with a bunch of other stuff being cancelled. Lots of speculation about a September/October event, which is after the Tour schedule ends so they'll be able to find something to make everyone happy.

2020 season ends 8/30. The 2021 schedule hasn’t been announced, but the season typically starts in mid-September. There’s also the Ryder Cup at the end of September. October is the Asian swing.

There aren’t a lot of open dates that make sense, but maybe they can juggle around some of the fall series? They aren’t high profile events but they also aren’t alternate events either.

So I had previously heard that Augusta closes right after (or soon after) the Masters. This tweet shows a photo of Augusta National in the fall.
Looks like they don't irrigate during the summer.

The course is basically dormant until mid-late September anyway, right? Plus it looks nothing like it does for the tourney until pretty much April. I feel like that matters for the powers that be. My guess if it doesn’t happen before mid May, which logistically seems like a long shot at best, they cancel and come back next year.

For regular people play golf courses seem like a relatively good place to be going forward. Limited contact with others. Lots of open space. Might want to avoid the locker room.
And yet I've received 3 emails today from Denver area municipalities that the courses are closed until further notice. Golfers don't have to interact with each other, but staff members still do I guess.

I think that is more in line with other government run entities being shut down that are run by the parks and rec department.

I was chatting to one of the Pinehurst assistant pros this morning , whilst they have been affected on the resort side of things to a degree, member play has not been affected. There's plenty of rounds being played and business as usual. A lot of new disinfection and sanitory procedures have been implimented. This sounds in keeping with emails I have received from other courses along the lines of " this is what we are doing to try and keep you safe but we will continue to monitor the situation".

Why would a golf course close all summer? Isn’t that peak time for most?

Not for super rich people in Atlanta. It's way too hot and humid and they all have other memberships. Most courses in very hot locations overseed with a totally different kind of grass in the summer than in the rest of the year. It's likely that members of Augusta never want to experience that at their beloved course. It's also possible that it's better for the course itself to just let it go through it's natural cycles.

Going through some Masters final rounds that are on YouTube. Guessed they stopped doing it, 2017 is the last one on there. I was kinda hoping they just burned the 2018 tape and put 2019 on there but no dice. Watching 2011 now.

I was combing through the dvr last night and fired up last year's final round. Tiger's putt from the back of the 9th green took about 20 seconds to get to the hole. I forgot how good that putt was.

I watch these every year at about this time to get ready for the tourney. It's perfect to fall asleep to at night.

8 pm FS1 tonight is the replay of the final round of the 2018 US Open at Shinnecock. It will be fun to watch this since I was there for it and haven't seen a replay of it before.
There are a ton of US Open final round broadcasts on Youtube too. I watched 2008 the other day.

Tiger just made eagle at 8 to get to within a shot in 2011. Forgot how bananas the front 9 was this year. The most common memory from this one was Rory's tee shot on 10, but this thing was already pretty wild before then.

The back 9 is even wilder. I think the lead was changing on a minute by minute basis.

My memory sucks. I thought Rory was in control until that tee ball on 10 and then all hell broke loose. Not the case at all. Rory sucked from the get-go and Schwartzel and Tiger were going off.

Golf.com has a podcast - A Pod Unlike Any Other - where their staff talk through an old Masters or US Open they watched on YouTube. It's like a Rewatchables concept.

A Pod Unlike Any Other

The main guys that do this are pretty young, and sometimes I'm surprised at what they don't know about old players and the history of the game (or maybe I'm just getting old). It's better when they bring in staff like Michael Bamberger and Alan Shipnuck who bring more of that older perspective. But overall it's a pretty good listen after watching those.

I may have told this story before so apologies if so, but I watch a lot of youtube golf vloggers. A lot. TXG, Mark Crossfield, Erik Anders Lang, etc...

EAL captures the essence of the game better than most, but I have to laugh at some of his videos. Last year they gave him incredible access to the US Open and he filmed there for a few days. One of the clips he goes to a make shift hall of fame and looks at some of the artifacts. One of which was Hogan's 1 iron. He picks it up and is like "Oh my god! Look at that! Who could ever hit a 1 iron?! " then looks over to a genlteman walking by and says, "You sir, could you hit this?!" and the guy laughs and says no. You could tell EAL just went to ask the nearest person. He goes back to talking about the club as HALE IRWIN walks away laughing because he realizes EAL has no idea who he's talking to.

The next day, EAL had a podcast where he answered questions. I wrote in and said, "Did you realize you were talking to Hale Irwin in your US Open video?" He reads it aloud quickly and just says "Uhhh no idea what you're talking about" and he moves on lol

EAL is horrible. Guy stinks out loud.

"I don't keep score! But here's my video of me trying to break 90!"

We’re on to the 2008 US Open. I forgot Tiger doubled the 1st 3 out of 4 rounds in regulation.

Also, I miss Johnny Miller. He was tremendous.

If we're talking Youtube golf content, I'm a No Laying Up stan. Their different series and videos are incredibly well produced, entertaining, and varied. Their Strapped series where 2 of the guys do 3 rounds of municipal golf, food, and lodging for $500 is their best stuff, it's a spiritual cousin to Bourdain's Parts Unknown, but for golf.

Tough crowd.

He does stuff that nobody else does. You can lump Shiels, Crossfield, TXG (although they do some cool stuff), Cogorno, AMG, Whittaker, and on and on all into the same category. They all make the same stuff and it's boring as hell.

For example, are any of them doing stuff like this?

That shit is just fkn cool. And the production quality is great. I don't love all his stuff and I'm not even subscribed to his channel. It's all subjective because I think the NLU stuff is amateurish and often boring.

You're all missing the best channel on YouTube though:

Thanks for this. I’m going to check it out.

Another vote for Crossfield here. I love their stuff.
