Hero World Challenge on the Golf Channel starting at 1pm. One year I want to go to this - warm weather, minimal fans, superstar players.

I’m also enjoying following Riggs’ adventures in the Bahama’s right now too.
My buddy's dad is down there playing in it too, he actually snuck in the cut in the senior net division. Said the wind on Day 1 was really absurd. Parziale shot like 81 I think, so it was certainly a factor. That said - he was not playing well. I've been there before, you're in a stroke play event, you're putting a lot of pressure on yourself, and you can't do anything about it. It sucks. Props to him for grinding through it and putting it all out there in the public sphere.

Tournament Stroke play golf is a whole different animal. Golf is hard.

Hahaha Hicks' line right after Stenson hit that iron into 18..."God it must feel good to hit a golf shot like that."

Reed appears to have cheated today. His ball was in a footprint in a waste bunker with a mound of sand behind his ball. He took two practice swings which knocked away some of the sand that was behind the ball. He’s +2 now pending the outcome of the review.

Two stroke penalty assessed, Reed said he didn’t intend to improve his lie.

Reed lied.

The internet has found a clip of Reed doing the same thing in 2015.

There were a lot of allegations of him cheating in college. I bet it was this type of shit. A lot less eyes on him then.
It’s almost unbelievable that a pro - especially one with Reed’s reputation - would cheat that blatantly.

I remember when allegations of marking a ball to the side (instead of behind the ball) was enough for the LPGA to suspend Jane Blalock for a year. Won’t happen, but Reed should be kicked off the tour until he learns how to follow the rules.

And it's so brazen. There was a camera right BEHIND him. Imagine what he was doing when the camera wasn't on him? It boggles the mind.

I hate having to root for Reed in team competitions and it's a drag he's going to be teeing it up at Augusta forever. What a turd.

Based on that 2015 video - which happened in the very same tournament - this is clearly an MO for him. He uses the fact that the sand is considered a "waste bunker" as license to flatten his lie. It's the kind of thing a slimy club player does. A touring pro should absolutely be hounded from the game over it.

I love how he's claiming it was the camera angle...as if that altered the visual of sand splashing behind the ball.

I'm far far far from a pro level, but I can't recall ever even addressing the ball in sand when I take a practice swing ,.and I'm having trouble recalling seeing any pro do it, nor do I see many doing it going forward even with the run change that you're allowed to ground it now.

The guy is a piece of shit, well beyond his punchable face.

It's important to remember that a waste bunker is not like a regular bunker. (Although the rule changes this year narrowed the differences significantly.) In a waste bunker, you've always been allowed to ground your club and take practice swings that take sand. However, you've never been allowed to alter the condition around your ball, which is why, as you observed, most players would not sole their clubs behind the ball. It's just too risky.

On the NBC broadcast, Azinger and Hicks say that Reed told them “he didn’t see or feel it.”

What a crock of shit. First of all in the non-zoomed in video he is clearly looking down over the ball so there is no way he could’ve have seen it. Secondly, I can’t imagine him not feeling his club knocking the sand away. There’s no way I’ll believe an elite tour pro couldn’t feel that. I’m a shitty 17 handicapped and would be able to feel that.

Yes, sorry, I know the difference, I just still never would sole my club behind my ball in a bunker, whether i was allowed to or not, for the reason you cite. Who knows how precariously it's resting on the sand and even a freshly raked waste bunker or a shoe imprint can leave the conditions iffy enough that your ball can move.

The Paris of the 80s
I swung by the local comic book store yesterday and there was a pack of 1991 PGA Tour Trading Cards on the counter for 50 cents. How could I pass that up? Anyway, I got this sweet Brandell Chamblee rookie card:

I can't wait to crinkle it up and throw it at a screen this season.

JT had a 1-shot lead on 18, hit his 2nd into the bushes/deep grass short left of the green. Lost ball. Xander is aboard in 2, has 30-40 feet for eagle. JT likely needs an up and down to save a playoff.

X blows the eagle putt well by the hole.

JT makes bogey, X with 12ish feet for the win

Nope, playoff, with Patrick Reed joining

JT passed Spieth on the wins list. Crazy he won that, he clearly doesn’t like that hole but was able to grind out shots when he needed it.

Wonder what the o/u on the next Kessler Karain attacking a fan incident is? Phoenix? If Reed’s getting shit in Maui, he’s not safe anywhere. All largely avoidable if the Tour handled his cheating properly and don’t bend over backwards to portray him as a victim.

Reed is going to be destroyed this year. I cannot fathom any way he's not heckled everywhere, all the time.

And if he thinks this is the best way to handle things, this will escalate quickly.

There seems to be (at least) two factors at work here:

1. Patrick Reed is a deeply-flawed, dysfunctional human who has the talent to win without cheating, but apparently cannot stop himself.

2. He has surrounded himself with friends/advisors who are providing extremely destructive advice.

“Deny and counterattack” is a strategy that guarantees a maximum Streisand effect. This is going to be a long, ugly year.
