Ratley was used almost exclusively as a deep threat up the right sideline and didn't contribute on special teams. Pass.
YMMV. At least he wouldn’t be a redundant skill set. But we’re talking about bad or worse options here.

10 more cuts to go. Come on Onwenu! Make that roster!

That was my first thought. As I mentioned in the roster projection thread, a player has to be on the active 53-man roster when they go on IR or they can't return. Anyone the Pats put on IR before making the final roster would be done for the season. They'll have an open roster spot once they (presumably) put Beau Allen on IR. If they want him to come back from IR at some point, Allen has to make the final roster first.

This could just be a clever move to keep an additional player that they think may not make it through waivers (J.J. Taylor?), then they can bring on whatever kicker (probably Folk) once they put Beau Allen on IR.

Also: C) They were able to sign Folk off the street less than two weeks ago. It's not like there are only 32 guys on the planet who can kick, and they're much easier to integrate on the fly than maybe any other position.

I remember a few years ago when this team would cut 5-10 players you were sad to see go and other teams were chomping to pick up. Not sad to see any of these guys go. I guess this is the effect of years of subpar drafting.

But preseason played a part of that. If guys like Ross or Taylor lit it up in a game you’d be more sad. You just haven’t seen them.

They kept both Cunningham and Onwenu. A lot of people thought they were fighting for one spot. Maybe that's why they did the kicker shenanigans.

Streak of 16 straight seasons with an UDFA rookie making the roster is over. Here are all the cuts:

I prob would have just spent the 3 million for one year of Gost and called it a day. Oh well. Hindsight goggles...
Well, except it was the foresight based on rankings. I've not tabulated the "conventional wisdom" vs. "reaches" list to compare how BB would have done if he had drafted chaulk. But like some notable other picks, like BB's second round jinx, this one is not hindsight.

To clarify, I'm a superficial follower, but when he reaches like this, it catches my attention. I just don't know how the overall ledger reads.

They will probably re-sign Folk on Monday after they designate someone to IR-to-return. It might be one of the OL or Beau Allen. I think they kept the best overall 53 players which meant 10 OL.

Some folks appear to be having the annual problem of grasping what today is: It's the day to get down to 53 players ... it's not the day to have your roster set for Opening Day

Interesting fact from Miguel: 17 of the 20 draft picks from the past two drafts have made the 2020 roster (at least initially, as E5 correctly pointed out). 2 were cut and 1 retired. That’s pretty impressive actually.

K is the easiest position to integrate onto your roster. Smart move to me. I wouldn't use a 5th rounder on one, but whatever.

What was their status when they released Gostkowski? Just curious on the timeline, as they had him on books for $4.8M for this year. I'm having trouble finding if they ended up eating any dead cap space for releasing him.
They only had $3-4M at the time. They released him March 23. I can’t seem to nail down the exact savings, but he is counting $1.4M in dead cap. He would have had a $3.5M base salary so they may have saved that much.

Patriots took my fantasy football draft strategy. Load the roster with as many players as possible, wait for the dust to settle, go grab a K after. (Actually, I agree with above posters - Folk, who doesn't have to clear waivers, will sign on Monday, after they put Beau Allen on IR.)

Slight pushback...because of the opt outs, the talent pool is a bit thinner this year. It seems that the level of players being released this year is on the particularly thin side. I mean, Sanu still seems to be by far the best WR released today which speaks volumes.

Usually there are 1 or 2 players out there that we all believe can represent a potential upgrade over someone on the roster (which they virtually never actually sign mind you)....I cant see anyone this year.

Your point still stands, but I expect the roster to be a lot closer to today's come opening kickoff than typical.

I dont get how a team w 35 million in cap space doesnt have a kicker set at this point in the offseason.
The cap space just appeared recently and that kicker is likely Folk. He just isn't on the roster right now because they are trying to get some folks to IR.

It's not feel better or worse. I'm just saying I dont expect as many micro transactions as usual this year. There are fewer players of any value out there, and Bill hasnt played any preseason games against other teams, hasnt scrimmaged against anyone, and doesnt have any tape to see that he didnt see pre draft. Maybe Ill be wrong i dunno

I would say that with less talent available, it would be more difficult to decide the back end of the roster. Comparing what would typically the 65-75 dude on the roster is going to be more difficult.

I know we always talk about BB snapping up these guys after we scrimmaged against them but we didn't do that last season. The year before we signed 2 WRs. Neither stuck. And neither from teams we played in preseason.

We don't actually go out and make these micro-transactions.

As has been stated previously, compounding the trickiness of end-of-roster activity is the lack of “tape” on any of these guys with no preseason games being played.

It would be mildly surprising to me if there was a lot of inter-team movement. Will be interesting to compare vs. previous years.

It's funny, I think the opposite: without tape, it's difficult to tell what players the team liked two years ago look like now until you have them in for some practices. I think there will at least be a lot of practice squad churn.

Churn within their own squad? I'm not positive how it works, but I believe if you sign from another teams practice squad you have to promote that player to the active roster. And if you churn within your own squad with players off the street, you risk losing the players you cut to other teams because I believe they can grab those guys you cut without promoting them to their active roster. I honestly have no idea which argument is going to hold true this season because both views have some merit.

Keep in mind this year that:
1) teams can protect four practice squad players each week from being poached from other teams.
2) teams can promote two practice squad players each week to the gameday roster and then revert them to the PS without clearing waivers again.

So the PS is more of an extension of the 53-man roster than it typically is. I don't know if that will result in less player movement, but the league's goal is less player movement.

No Patriots were claimed not did the Pats claim anyone.

So far, here is who they’ve signed to the practice squad.
Terez Hall, D’Angelo Ross, Caash Maluia, Bill Murray, Myles Bryant, Justin Rohrwasser, Jake Burt

Great to see Myles make it through (the others too, but I get a Butler vibe from Bryant...)
