I'd be intrigued by Winston if not for the fact that he's almost certainly a bad person.

I like the idea of BB trying to straighten out a dynamic talent, but I do not like the idea of bringing in a sex offender.

I think BB wants an accurate passer with a low amount of INTs above any other qualities.
Yes. This is why people writing about acquiring Winston are out of their minds. On offense Belichick values ball protection over all else. This has always been true.

Replacing Tom Brady with someone with questionable off-field stuff would be an incredibly terrible move, football reasons aside. You'd never see the Red Sox replace their most popular player with someone with....errr.....nm :)

My hot take in all this is that Stidham is going to be awful, and we'll need a veteran sooner rather than later.

Mitchell Trubisky? His '18 numbers were OK....

Trubisky stinks hence why Chicago traded for Foles. I'd rather roll with Stidham than roll with a total bust that is Trubisky.

If you were designing an offense to Trubs strengths it would be like the Matt Luke Ole Miss days: 5 plays and mostly mirrored concepts. His reading/processing/decision making are Buzz's girlfriend level of woof.

Oddsmakers have Deshaun Watson the slight favorite over Jarrett Stidham to be the opening game starter. Seems nuts to have a guy not on the roster favored over someone who is but...
Since Trevor Lawrence can't even enter the draft ... I'd say that site is useless

How is Watson going to end up on the Pats?

And Trevor Lawrence? Are these bettors assuming the 2020 season isn't going to be played? And even if it's not, I doubt the Pats will have the #1 pick in the 2021 draft.

I mean, it's not my money so I shouldn't care, but holy crap that list is stupid.

If they do go the Stidham route, wouldn't be surprised to see Hoyer back. Just released by the Colts, given that offseason could be shortened, someone who knows the system could be valuable.

The Bengals trade a #3 this year and their #1 from ‘21 for #23 this year followed by the ‘21 season getting cancelled. Of course in that case the NFL will finally announce the penalties from BRollFootageGate and it will include their first rounders from 2021. ;)

Maybe as a camp arm. I can't see them going into the season with a QB on the roster who isn't at least a lottery ticket starter possibility. Hoyer was valuable when you had a firm starter and maybe needed a backup who could win a game or two in a pinch. This is different. They probably want a backup who is in competition to start.

Hoyer at short $ seems a no brainet

which is why I’d be surprised for it to happen. Usually when I think something is a sure thing the pats are thinking something completely

This is predicated on them truly planning on Stidham as the starter, but I expect him to take Kessler's spot. I also would not be surprised to see 3 QBs.

If they are bringing in a true starter (Jameis, Newton, Dalton, Flacco) obviously not. But if they go the Stidham and draftee (Love, Eason, Fromm, Hurts, Morgan etc.) route I could see them wanting the backup to be a guy with a lot of experience in the system and a willingness to teach the kids. Especially since we don't know what impact on learning the system there will be the longer players can't start working out.

Can I just check something here? Maybe no mini camps in the short term, but wouldn’t they be doing frequent conference calls and the like to get familiar with the playbook at least?

It’s obviously no substitute for working together physically, but at least it’s something and I would guess they would be ramping that activity up; otherwise everyone will go insane.

Something I have been thinking about and I know it is probably the longest of longshots with BB. But, if Vegas passes on a QB with their picks there is a decent chance Jordan Love is there at 23. Any way they employ some sort of two-qb system with he and Stidham?

That seems unlikely. Don’t think there are many (any?) examples of 2 QBs being used successfully absent maybe a gadget QB for a couple plays. Pretty sure the saying is: if you have 2 QBs, then you don’t have a QB. Or something like that.

A nice thing about Hoyer is he could swap in for a quarter or so if Stidham is seeing ghosts or whatever, but then Stidham catches a breather and goes back in.

The only guy on the radar who really intrigues me is Cam Newton. If he gets released and is willing to come here on a cheap one year prove it deal, he's worth a flyer (assuming the medicals aren't too gnarly). If it works out, great. If not, wouldn't cost much and they'll continue developing Stidham either way.

I was living in the Carolinas when Cam entered the league, so I watched a lot of those Panthers games, and it was impossible not to be impressed with him. Cam is a unique QB that can do some crazy stuff on the football field, when he's healthy.

Newton has burned the Pats both times they've played him. Belichick praised the shit out of him heading into the 2017 game, even beyond the typical ball-washing he does of every player on every opponent in his press conferences. Made it a point to call him a good decision maker, a quality of Newton's that is underrated. So there could be some interest there. Him in a McDaniels offense could be pretty fun.

Agreed. Sounds like he’ll eventually get cut and I think he’s worth a look on a one year deal as long as his body isn’t completely broken. I think Redskins are probably where he ends up though.

I’m on the Cam train too. I’d like to see what Bill could do with a mobile QB. I’ll never forget that moment in the SB when he dove away from the loose ball, but he otherwise seems like a guy who leaves it all out there.

Still, with the injury risk, you’d have to be sure that Stidham is ready to be the guy.

I really can’t see the Patriots looking at someone like Winston or Newton. With a strong likelihood of no minicamps and abbreviated training camps, and Belichick’s penchant for familiarity, I would think Brissett is the best bet. He played decent last year until he got hurt, so maybe they think that he can help them.

I dunno. Brady is gone so the offensive system is likely going to be different next year. Harry and Sanu hardly have any experience in the system. Edelman might get traded away. Whatever Stidham learned last year may not have great value at this point.

I think they would grab Cam if the price is right. I’m not convinced they value Brissett all that highly but certainly possible. I ultimately don’t think they do much other than a cheap vet like Hoyer but Cam would be preferred option for me, if healthy.

I'd be shocked if they changed the system - Belichick came up under Ray Perkins and has always run Erhardt-Perkins, and it's what McDaniels has always done, as well as what the players are familiar with. The playbook will be different; I imagine a lot of the staple stuff will stay but they'll also tailor things to what the new QB and other players do well and don't do well. Experience in the system is still going to be useful.

Certainly useful but I’m still pulling the trigger on Cam, it it’s a possibility. However, I ultimately think 2020 is the Stidham Show. Don’t see a “splash” QB signing/trade at this point.

At this point, unless they have good reason to think it'll be an epic disaster, I say just roll with Stidham, get a decent vet backup in there, use the cap space and draft picks to shore up everywhere else, and hope like hell that they can turn Stidham into a good QB. If they can, then suddenly the Patriots become a very good team. If they can't...well...welcome to the world of drafting high in each round, which also wouldn't be the worst thing in the world for them moving forward.

Put me in the Stidham as starter camp. BB wouldn’t have let Brady walk if he wasn’t comfortable with that plan.

Sure he tries to let somebody go a year early rather than a year late, but you can’t just do that in a vacuum with your QB. He would have sucked it up and done what he had to do to keep Brady (like with McDaniels) if there wasn’t a plan B.

He’s been preparing for the post-Brady era for years now. He’s apparently seen enough to be comfortable handing the keys to Jarrett right out of the gate.

I agree that a vet backup is likely but as a BACKUP. He wouldn’t have let Brady go if he was going to have to get somebody off the scrap heap as his starter.

Based on some articles that have come out, I don't think BB had much choice.

They didn’t have to agree to void his deal and give up the franchise/transition tag back in August, but I agree it was over come January/February. The choice was made earlier.
Sure. And at that point there was still some chance that both sides could do something. But it's clear now that Brady wants to see if grass is greener. Unless he ends up playing NE in the Super Bowl, I'll be rooting for him.

BB doesnt make the play calls. Offensive familiarity is out the window with Brady gone. If McDaniels thinks he can succeed with someone like Cam and the numbers work, I dont see BB getting in the way of that.

Good. To me that signals they want to give Stidham a shot. Way better than Cam or Dalton or whatever.

Real happy about this. Stidham had he had a better junior season than sophomore year at Auburn and he probably doesn't even get to the 4th round. I'd rather go with the upside play than a retread on the free agent market.

I don't think this signals anything about their plans. Hoyer is a cheap way to have an experience guy here through at least camp. If they find a vet they like he or Kessler will get cut. If they draft a guy they like he or Kessler will get cut. Just makes sense to get him in now in case you don't do anything else (or just see him as an upgrade on Kessler).

By itself it doesn't but unless they sign Cam or someone soon, then Stidham, Hoyerm and Kessler are the 3 in camp unless some crazy draft day trade happens.

Or they draft a QB. I'd be stunned if they don't. Even if it's later in the draft.

That's what I meant by draft day trade. I seriously doubt they draft someone at 23 that they think will be able to start in week 1, especially with OTAs and things like that possibly off the table. So, I think BB is hoping Stidham wins the job, but has Hoyer here if he's not ready.

If Hoyer is truly the backup plan then they are punting the season. He’s gotta be here strictly for leadership and to help JS transition in the QB room...Hoyer is not an NFL quarterback.
