Agreed regarding Stidham.

Any veteran QB is going to take up too much cap space and they won't be worth it. Use the money and shore up other areas of the team and see what Stidham has.

I've been driving the Stidham bandwagon since before the 2019 draft. He has all the tools, but he was stuck in a lousy Auburn offense. As I said before, if they had drafted Stidham in the 1st round last year (instead of Harry), with the way Stidham played in the preseason, no one would be upset with his performance.

What options are out there?

May not be all but I have:
Bridgewater
Rivers
Carr (trade / cut)
Winston
Dalton (trade)
Foles (trade)
Newton (trade)

We should probably merge the 2 new threads on the 2020 QB

What performance, though? That one drive early in the season? That's it?

I assume it's a battle between Stidham and a vet, with maybe a rookie if someone they like falls....
I assume they aren't getting Bridgewater, Rivers or Winston.
I hope they don't trade for Dalton

In terms of cheap guys you can bring in and have him push Stidham....

Bortles?
Gabbert?
Keenum?
Is Alex Smith coming back?

I guess I understood your original statement that people are "upset with his performance" to mean the one drive early in the regular season. Otherwise, what performance would people be upset about? (Your original statement carves out the pre-season performance as not being the performance that people are "upset about".)

Oh, I guess it was worded clumsily on my part. I meant that Stidham played like a 1st rounder in the preseason. If they had drafted Stidham in the 1st round, the selection would have been considered a "reach." Fans would have been wondering why the hell they drafted him in the 1st round. Yet Stidham looked exactly like a 1st round QB is supposed to look in the preseason.

I felt like he had first round tools. Jim Nagy (Senior Bowl director and former Patriot scout) was also super high on Stidham. I think there's genuine reason for optimism regarding Stidham, and I don't think of him as a 4th round pick.

If Rivers goes to Indy (which I have heard) anyone think Jacoby is available? Would we want him? Could we afford him (I suck at NFL cap math)

Gotcha. I too feel like he could be a guy they like. I mean Brady didn't play his rookie season either. I hope some people aren't thinking that Stidham isn't the answer because he choked in his debut drive. Brady wasn't lighting the world on fire during the first SB season, many were even calling for Bledsoe to take over as late as just before the SB.

No thanks. I'd rather go cheap with Stidham.

It would be pretty cool if Stidham turned out to be really freaking good.

I say roll with the kid, but have a better backup than Cody Kessler, just in case.

I don't even care. The team remaining is bad enough to where they're not a serious super bowl contender. Just go with the best financial option until an actual QB comes around.

I'm not high on Stidham but I'd rather go with him than pay some retread like Dalton or Brissett actual money.

Out of curiosity, why aren't you high on Stidham?

He just didn't do anything in the preseason or regular season to give me any reason to be.
He was very good in the preseason (his first NFL action ever) and he had one drive (that ended badly) in the regular season.

My issue with Stidham...and uncertainty with the team generally is....i cant tell what they want to be. Are they still trying to compete for the playoffs this year? Then they need someone a bit more experienced IMO. Are they in full rebuild mode? Then I question some of the guys they re-signed. Im just confused.

Stidham looked really good in the pre-season, admittedly against a lot of flotsam and jetsam: 61-90, 4/1 TD to INT and they felt okay releasing Hoyer. Obviously pre-season really isn't meaningful but it compares favorably to JG, Brissett, etc. in that same spot.

Cap money carries over and already is tight. With Jackson and Mahomes in the conference it is not going to be a championship year and the team is one of the very few that doesn’t face win now pressure.

See whether Stidham was worth the draft pick, save cap. Every dollar not spent today is a dollar that can be spent in later years. Let’s see what BB can do picking somewhere other than near the bottom of every round.

Agree to disagree. He looked mediocre against 3rd stringers.Timing off, decisions off.
Stidham may turn the corner for sure, but I feel basically the same way about him that I did about Cassell --may be capable of being an average player in his best days, but really not capable of more than that.

This season may not be the best time to bring in a new QB, especially a rookie. There's a non-zero chance that OTA's and mini-camps will be truncated if not outright cancelled. And it's too early to know if training camps will start on time.

If they see someone they really like in the draft, pull the trigger. But otherwise, it may be best to let the Stidham era begin, with a cheap veteran backup on hand if needed.

Trade Jules to whichever team Brady signs with. Use the draft capital to draft one of the many outstanding WR prospects in this year's draft. The OL, with Andrews returning and Thuney back, should be great. The RBs are fine. The defense has taken a couple of losses, but that's one position where they should be able to fill in ok. Secondary is still phenomenal. Ghost back (I think) so special teams are really good.

Let's see how the team would do with Harry, Sanu, Meyers, and another young stud rookie WR, along with a TE in the draft. Might be a disaster. Might end up being great long-term but rough at the start. Or who knows...maybe they're an exciting team that surprises.

He completed 68% of his passes and had 4 TDs to 1 INT and a rating of 102.6. If that was him being off you had unreasonable expectations.

Okay, appreciate your thoughts. In any event, I hope they find the answer sooner rather than later, whether it's Stidham or otherwise.

I know this is silly on my part but there is something magical about this video. Stidham has all the tools. He had a good senior bowl week. I know I liked him enough for him to be one of the three QBs last year I hoped they would take a look at. He seems like a real hard worker and has a Patriots kind of attitude.

It's Stidham's job to lose. Maybe they bring in a vet to push him, but the Pats are really high on Stidham.

TB leaving is like a death in the family, but it looks like it was unavoidable and for the best for every entity involved.
Let's roll with Stidham and see what he has. I've liked what I've seen of him.

Stidham is a complete unknown, obviously. I hope he is the future. But one thing I don't buy, is that Bill views 2020 as a complete blow it up/rebuild year. I think they will acquire the best veteran QB they can afford, have a competition at the QB spot, try and manage their resources to upgrade other positions where they can, and attempt to compete for a playoff spot.

Everything about BB screams competition. It’s all he espouses. He wants competition at every position.

Do you still know someone on the inside?
Kinda, sorta, not really. My buddy still has a channel in, but he gets less info now because the person he talks to now has better access to the team than he did in the past and is worried about letting out team secrets and having it get back to him. Weird how that happened.

Bridgewater close with Carolina--3 years, $60M--so cross him off list.
