Are Gates BBQ and Arthur Bryant's still there? It was almost 20 years ago when I was last there but those were like the dueling legendary KC barbeque places and they were both fantastic. I think I read one of them closed.
Gates is still there. KC is amazing. Go to a different jazz club every night.

Sorry, I meant in terms of a player getting COVID-19 from an opposing player on the field, court, rink, pitch, whatever. I think there's one possible NBA case from back in March, but it's fuzzy for me.
Didn’t Marcus Smart probably get it from Rudy Gobert?

On the topic of shortening the season, former Eagles’ CEO Joe Banner said this in a Philly Inquirer story today, before the Cam news broke:

Banner: My view all along was that I was confident they’d start the season. I’ve spoken to enough people there to know that they’re very determined not to get thrown off by a small number of cases and shut things down. They’re going to do their best to keep it alive.
But just listening to the doctors talk about how this thing is likely to get worse as the fall goes on, and the players and their families being in the community and not in a bubble, it’s hard to picture them getting through it without having some challenges.
Hopefully, they’re manageable challenges and they can keep going. Because I know they’re very determined. If it’s at all possible or even a little bit reasonable, their intent is to keep going forward if they possibly can.
Domo: I’m assuming they have a plan for a shortened season if that’s something they have to consider?
Banner: Yeah. Your preference would be to play a shortened season where everybody has played the same number of games, and hopefully approximately the same number of games within their division. To main the ability to do that if they had a shortened season, to have everybody at least approximately keep competitive balance, even if it’s an imperfect competitive balance, I think people see now how hard that’s going to be to do.

Listening to doctors? That doesn't sound like an executive of a NFL team.

Actually, if you’re a night owl - one of the best nights of my life was at the (mutual musicians) Foundation. It’s this old jazz club with pictures on the wall of every great who’s ever played there - which is pretty much every jazz great ever. I think we were there at 1 or 2 am, and local musicians just get on stage and jam. It was the most incredible thing I ever saw as I sat there eating a $10 plate of swai, corn and seasoned rice.

Hands down one of the best experiences I’ve ever had.

What did you say? Let it all hang out.
I took umbrage with the idea that this is a great opportunity for the NFL to play games 4 days a week, or move the season so they can own President's Day or something. This is more likely to be a total disaster for the NFL then a boon. And I selfishly find myself hoping they work it out because Sunday afternoons in the Fall have been very special over the past 20 years, and I feel guilty about that.

It's not likely to be a total disaster or a boon. It's most likely going to be a temporary obstacle to deal with in a season that they knew would have some obstacles of this nature.

we're at empirical brewery right now and trying to make the most of it. :)
Gates is a good shout, but the best part about it is the sauce which you can (and should) buy bottles of at the grocery store and smuggle home in your suitcase.

Do the Martini Corner circuit, too. I have fond memories of those places from when I was working in KC for the Obama campaign at a converted beauty parlor down the block from there.

Fyi on gates. The bbq sauce is not free if you're doing pickup. But if you play dumb they may let you snag it.

Yeah. One of the links here earlier said the owners understood things like this would happen.

Arthur Bryant's is still there. I went there (and to the Negro League Baseball Museum and the Jazz Museum) on the way back from Chicago in August.

But don't sleep on Oklahoma Joe's either. (I guess their name is now just Joe's.) That's the third of the dueling three KC places, and I know several people who swear by them.

Eat at Joe’s. It’s phenomenal.

I dont understand how, given the NFL has had months longer than the other sports to figure this out, the best they currently have is "Because of the diagnosis of a condition with a ~5 days incubation period, we will move the game 48 hours later". Pure fucking insanity.

Yes, yet. But it has been 6 days since they played.
So 42% of the incubation period? 14 days brother. Tests aren't really reliable even for asymptomatic for 7-10 days. I was literally just in the hospital tuesday, tested negative and they told me i had to do it again in ten days if I wanted to be truly safe around people. 6 days means diddly squat.

not entirely true. i saw someone on twitter that would move some bye weeks around a bit and get this game to week 17. which you would imagine would be popular

Dr. Flynn has an interesting article posted on BSJ about a possible Tuesday game:

If Newton’s CT number was high (meaning he may have had very little viral RNA in his airway…or at least on his swab), there may be a lower chance he spread the virus to teammates or staff. It would be reassuring if Newton had little virus. and no other players or staff test positive by Tuesday morning. On the other hand, if Newton’s CT number showed that he had a lot of virus in his airway, doctors may be more concerned about the risk of other cases popping up. The CT number is far from perfect, but it is another piece of information that doctors can use to help guide decision-making. Of course, if tracking technology shows that Cam Newton had very few or no close contacts in the facility over the past few days, that would be reassuring too.

I get that, and I hope you’re doing well, but the NFL isn’t stopping the Pats for 2 weeks because of Cam. That’s what I’m referring to.

From a purely football perspective, having to play on Tuesday and again on Sunday seems pretty non-ideal, particularly since the Broncos game is more or less a must-win for a playoff shot.

No you're referring to game that happened six days ago its some its some kind of medical fact/precedent. It's not. This isn't Pats related. There was no fucking way this wouldn't, won't, will hapen to every team.
Someone upthread commented on training camp being a "bubble". Bottom line is unless you're like NBA/NHL and it " players only, only here, there is no bubble. This was doomed before the start

Edit: no sarcasm, appreciate the thoughts; i am doing well.

What does doomed mean? Wasn't baseball doomed from the start? You're not thinking clearly. And you're being reactionary. I don't understand why.

The goal for the NFL was never 0 positive tests. The goal is to try to play the season while navigating around positive tests and making changes on the fly when necessary. This was the goal of MLB, too. It looked like baseball was doomed and on this very website, there were multiples calls just to abandon the season. That was just as dumb and reactionary.

Having a QB contract the virus is essentially a worst case scenario for a team. I imagine that there’s a decent chance Cam has to sit this week and next week, depending on testing, etc.

Hope Cam makes a full recovery and the virus doesn’t spread. Early testing results seem like it’s somewhat contained.

I think it’s very likely we don’t see Cam until Week 7 after the bye, which sucks because an almost sure win against Denver is now going to be a tougher game. They simply can’t afford to lose that game given the gauntlet that’s following.

I’m wondering if home bubbles(meaning all team personnel moving into a hotel in their home cities) starts to get serious consideration. Would obviously require negotiation between the owners and the NFLPA. But the growing likelihood of missed game checks might be a motivating factor. I don’t think the league shuts down entirely either, but I also think, due to the close contact nature of the sport, and the challenges of making up games, they’re not really a close comparison to baseball, in terms of the obstacles they will face carrying on as more and more outbreaks occur.
