“ COVID is part of our society. It wasn’t caused by football or caused by sports. There’s no expert view right now that I’m aware of that sports is going to make that worse.”.
—Jim Harbaugh

Similarly, I’ve never read any expert views on whether repeatedly jamming a rusty fork into my eye is bad for my health. Socially distanced football is going to be lit.

I will be very surprised if college football is played at all this Fall. I think the NFL is in danger too. Football has to be the sport with the most potential for transmission, joined by hockey. It's hard to imagine it coming off in the traditional calendar time frame.

college football isn't happening. It's not. Colleges are just not set up to track kids for 4 months .... kids will be kids...there will be parties..there will be get togethers...there will be transmission.....What if 5 starters test positive during the week? What if kids get really sick? NFL has a shot because it is a business. You simply can't put kids health in jeopardy and having a football season does just that.

B1G still think there's no problem having Nebraska fly to Rutgers and back?

They're not busing that.

----

Also wonder if B12-2 is regretting inviting the Mountaineers in yet?

It’s not about the travel. It’s about trusting the environment you’re in. B1G schools have the resources to test athletes more often than G5 or FCS conferences. If you can just play teams who you know test players every week and not be out there with possibly asymptomatic kids from a MAC school, you should do that. This is why football at the lower levels just isn’t safe. A lot of schools just can’t afford to test everyone.

From what I hear it's not even about that. The conference has control over conference games but not non-conference games. If a team were to become suddenly stricken with COVID and become unable to play, the conference office can move around the schedule to make accommodations or switch games around.

That is a big part of it too. Fitting in 9 or 10 games over a 14 week period is much easier. Gives everyone flexibility. That’s even if we play.

Most of the flights with parties that large are charters...not like the teams are flying with the general public.

With the Big 10 going with conference-only competition, if other conferences follow suit, then Notre Dame wouldn't have anyone to play football against this season.

As I was corrected about this above, the ACC has adopted them this year so they'll play an ACC schedule.
Oh I missed that. That kinda sucks to be honest. Notre Dame should have to pay a penalty for insisting on being independent. Somehow they've convinced the college football world that they should have all the benefits of being an independent with none of the drawbacks. Bugs me to no end. You want to be an independent and not support a conference? Fine. But when the crap hits the fan, you should have to deal withe the consequences of being an independent.

Realistically at this point I think the best option is for conferences to blow up their schedules altogether and allow each school to negotiate whatever schedule it wants. For some schools (SEC, I'm looking at you), maybe they end up playing close to a regular conference schedule. For others, maybe they end up just scheduling a handful of games in the early part of the fall against regional opponents that they can travel in buses to. And some schools may ultimately just decide to cancel the season altogether. But especially given the geographic breadth of the P5 conferences these days, I don't see how a "one size fits all" approach even within conferences is going to work.

The NFL is going to play. I am personally convinced of that. No matter what, they are just going to play.

But college football might get through 3 weeks of games before they have to shut it down. Logistically, this is a nightmare. And it's dangerous. And the players aren't getting paid. I assume most of the players actually want to play. Athletes generally want to plow ahead no matter what.

But the staffs, the medical, the coaches, everything, it's just going to be impossible. It's too many people, too much travel, too much danger. These are students, not professionals.

So how big is the lawsuit going to be when a college football player gets covid and dies from it? The argument will be that he was essentially forced into it by his team, and it will be compelling.

If your scenario comes to pass, I hope the respective university and the NCAA are legally bludgeoned.

Of course, Notre Dame’s coach killed a student a few years ago and the university just paid them off, so probably not.

If there is college football and I’m a early round draft prospect, I’m probably not playing. Hell, I’m probably not even going to campus. There’s too much doubt about damage to the respiratory and other systems. At least some of the NFL players have gotten some money in their lives.

I go the other way. If you're a prospect, you want to play because you have to show off your skills for the NFL. It's a brutal situation. And a NFL prospect has literally been the best player at his position for his entire life. By far. Everything he has done is perfect and congratulated and rewarded.

That person doesn't want to just skip a year. He is the best. Nothing can stop the best.

But college football is not a small operation. There are 100s of people involved with every team. Logistically, it's impossible to put it all together. The NBA is in a bubble, with much smaller teams, and it's going to be a miracle if they can finish the season.

College football has no shot. Of course, the NFL will play, basically because management does not give a fuck and most players cannot miss a year of paychecks. For many, one year is 25% to 33% of their football career earnings. Not playing isn't an option. They are going to push it through no matter what.

I agree 100% . They only shot they have is if there is big drop in cases during the next month, but bottom line, colleges are simply not set up to baby sit student athletes. I'm sure some kids will adhere to social distancing and wearing a mask, but many will not. If you were to choose a setting to facilitate the spread of a virus, a college campus would be a good choice.

the NFL souild try a bubble in south datokta and Nebraska the super bowl and all playoffs games can be held in Nebraska stadium seats 80'K with soical dis can fit 10 k in there

u pick 16 south dakota high schools and 16 Nebraska high schools to house teams for regular season play u mainly play in sioux falls rapid city SD and omaha and Lincoln u house 8 teams in each area and play ball

I actually think there is a better than 50/50 chance that the NCAA completes their football season. Only playing conference games gives them extra weeks to work with. Hell, it wouldn't surprise me to see them play 4 games, then shut down for two weeks, then play another 4-5 games. And I think they'll shoot for having 10-15k people in the stands.

Some universities won’t be doing in-person classes and dorms will not be open.

Schools are going to have to figure out what their tolerance level is for covid. Because students ARE going to get it. You probably don't shut things down if 20 students get it. But if 20% of your students get it, with a number of severe cases, yeah, they're going to shut down. So somewhere in there is each school's tolerance level for covid infection.

I suspect a great many schools will open up with a bunch of protocols in place, and then when covid spreads like crazy (which it will in a lot of places), they'll end up cutting the semester short and sending people home to finish the term online.

What that will mean for athletics? Probably....kaput at that point. How can you justify keeping the athletes on campus just so they can compete?

WaPo: Vice President Pence wants schools reopened. LSU’s Ed Orgeron REALLY wants football

Speaking Tuesday with Vice President Pence, LSU Coach Ed Orgeron declared, “We need football.”
“We need to play. This state needs it; this country needs it,” he said as Pence applauded.
SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey, who also attended the meeting, said afterward: “Time is an asset that’s rapidly slipping away. … The fact we’ve seen increasing cases over the last few weeks across our region is not a positive indicator.”

An athletic director for a Power Five school expressed a more negative outlook Monday to Yahoo Sports, saying anonymously: “Right now, I don’t see a path in the current environment to how we play. I’m confident we’ll get back to what we all think of as normal, but it may be a year before that happens.”

I love Coach O, but what selfish thing to say. The country doesn't "need football."

The big schools going to conference only schedules is going to really destroy some mid-major athletic departments. Think of the guaranteed money that is now lost. I'm guessing most schools - like Eastern Washington for example - rely pretty heavily on big pay days from Washington or Washington State to fund budgets.

The bottom FBS conferences might be in worse shape (Sun Belt, CUSA, MAC; even AAC and MWC, although some of those teams draw ok in league play). Higher costs than FCS.

Yep FCS and G5 schools are struggling without the buy games. It will be the same for basketball season unfortunately.
