The two best players OSU have are saying they aren't playing and apparently many players stand with them.

College athletes seizing this opportunity to have their voices heard is really something to witness.

The complete and utter destruction of the NCAA by its own athletes is the bonfire I want to see. It's fascinating watching college athletes realize that without them, the whole system doesn't exist.

For those not familiar with Hubbard, this is not some scrub looking to make a name. Hubbard is really really good, and someone who is likely taking a risk with his future earnings by taking a stand like this. I also think he is Canadian, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

He is a leading Heisman candidate too.

He would be the best talent to declare for the Supplemental Draft since Josh Gordon. He's that good.

Both of those quotes read well at first but then you remember it’s Oklahoma (the state) and they can pretty easily be read as blaming the players

Public university firing a coach for wearing a T shirt with the letters of a network on his own time? I doubt that would hold up in court. Even if there’s some morals or conduct clause in his contract, this seems a bit of stretch. The shirt is not in itself racist, and while the network supporting it may be considered pro-Trump by some, or many, that would seem a few too many degrees removed from being a direct enough connection. YMMV on that take, as I’m sure it does on SoSH.

But it certainly and obviously affects his ability to be an effective coach who has a good relationship with his players, staff, and some fans. I’m not sure if he can apologize himself out if this one, but he’ll get a sizeable buyout if the school wants to get rid of him. It was dumb for someone in his position, with so much to lose (both in credibility and money), to wear it in public in this environment, that’s for sure.

Doug, it has to be the straw that SSF referenced. There is no way a “micro aggression” of this sort would send multiple players over the edge. There has to be obvious and blatant racism, likely through comments and actions and this t-shirt created the lever for the players to speak out at a time when they knew they’d be heard.

Chuba and Grundy did a video tonight and Chuba apologized for tweeting and basically said all is good. That was a fast 5 hour turnaround.

That may be the case, and that better explains the reaction of the players. Agreed there may not have been a similar reaction from the players three weeks ago.

Not so fast ...
Hubbard: “I went about it the wrong way by tweeting. … I could have went to him as a man … That was bad on my part.”
But 28 minutes later, Hubbard fired off one more warning shot by tweeting this: “No don’t get it twisted. Foots (sic) still on the gas. Results are coming. It’s not over.”

Apparently I was wrong and the players were solely triggered by Stoops wearing the OAN t-shirt. I have never visited the site but did see it referenced by Trump in a recent Yahoo article. Apparently OAN reported some fake news about the 75 yo Buffalo guy that was pushed down by police, being part of Antifa. My figuring was that OAN was similar to Infowars. But threatening to quit the team over this, times they are achanging.

Not sure how UT executed their plan, but it seems, as I posted above, that Penn State's plan inluded an immediate test upon arrival and a 2-week quarantine after the player's reported. No contact or drills that period was over.

I'll never say never in 2020, but I doubt it. Something tells me the boosters that would need to pick up the multi million dollar buyout aren't the type to get worked up over an OAN shirt and a 30-year old n-word drop.

Someone enlighten me by explaining how there will be a college football season. I guess there is a chance if college kids don't do college things.

Given Fauci's comments about the NFL, I cannot imagine that college football will be able to play their season. To be clear, they will absolutely try. But I expect it to end by mid-late October for most schools.

(Most) University Presidents have a lot more accountability than Donald Trump.

I can see the NFL because of the organizational structure, the endless money and a commitment to make it happen. College is different conferences, that is just not set up as an entity to control college kids on campus. Looking for a way to spread a virus? Easy. Put 30,000 kids on a college campus.

I agree. They play a few games and the season ends abruptly. Some schools don’t even start the season.

Anybody know if all players were required to test negative before voluntary workouts began four days ago?
yes, they were. The players came in three phases. Upperclassmen in the Austin area reported for testing on 6/8. The rest of the players from outside the Austin area reported 6/15. The newly enrolled freshmen came 6/18. Every morning they are required to fill out a screening assessment and have their temperatures taken by infrared thermometer. If they scan above a pretty low threshold, they are not allowed into the building (let alone work out, which happens outdoors) and are referred to the team nurse for closer assessment. The results of that assessment are reviewed by the team doc. If there is any suspicion, the player has to isolate and there is contact tracing to isolate any known contacts.

By far the biggest vulnerability is the players not taking it seriously and continuing to socialize and eat together

That's why it's a long shot for the season to happen ...college kids are gonna be college kids. They aren't going to sit in their dorms in the fall wearing a mask. There will be parties. There will be impromptu gatherings. The college setting is literally the perfect way for a virus to spread.

I don't think the college athletes are taking this any less seriously than the professional's are, or the rest of society currently is for that matter.

If billions of $ weren't riding on their free labor this fiasco wouldn't be happening. An athletic scholarship shouldn't be exposing these students to more risk that their non-athletic classmates. I applaud the UCLA players acting on the same concerns every athlete should be worried about.

I love the NFL recommending players workout alone. I hope they're making plans to play the games under similar conditions.

30 LSU players in quarantine. A year without sports is weird.
According to tigerdroppings, many of the players got it from a night out at a Baton Rouge nightclub. Of course many of the fans on that site are happy that so many of the players are "getting it out of the way" now and not in August or September.

So you're saying that the championship will go by default to liberty u, the only team whose president ordered them to play?

At the University of Connecticut, the plan is to bring students in two weeks before classes start and test them. So these students will have nothing to do for two weeks. No classes, no homework, and maybe places like the on-campus rec center won't even be open, so they'll have nothing to do.

But yeah you'll have 12,000 of them there for two weeks with nothing to do, and the school expects them to social distance?

Heh. Well, there's nothing to do outside the campus (there's a nice little downtown area that's developed too) so maybe that makes matters worse? They'll all be packed together with nothing to do....of COURSE they're going to party and have sex and do everything that college students do. As @genoasalami pointed out....this is a perfect recipe for the virus to spread like wildfire.

They do have a plan for a dorm to isolate students that test positive during the year. But, uh, by the time they test positive, they will likely have infected many others.

I say all this knowing that figuring this stuff out is freaking impossible. I sure don't know what the right thing is to do. And as cynical and critical as I am of all politicians (truly an equal-opportunity hater of politics and politicians), I am giving them all a little grace here because let's be honest...nobody knows the right path to take here. We don't even know the long-term effects of this virus yet or how we can deal with it.

It's all just a giant frigging mess.

I see you are unfamiliar with the transmission possibilities of COVID in these times
