May as well kick this off, as the madness starts Tuesday.

My alma mater's Big South is one of the tournaments that starts on 3/3. My Winthrop Eagles started off 12-0 in conference, but faltered down the stretch, going 3-3 in their last six games. As a result, Radford (shout out to Javonte Green) is the #1 seed and will host the quarters and semis. Hopefully somebody else beats them and Winthrop makes the final, because the highest remaining seed will host the championship game. As the #2 seed, Winthrop can only host if Radford loses.

Winthrop had their best regular season victory in school history earlier in the year, winning on the road at St. Mary's way back in November. The Eagles go a legit 9-10 deep, have a ton of youth (only one Senior), and generally play a fast-paced, small-ball, fun brand of basketball.

Probable Big South Freshman of the Year D.J. Burns can get run off the court, and Winthrop's offense can slow down a bit too much when he's in the lineup, but the transfer from Tennessee can also look like a Baby Z-Bo at times. So, it's a trade-off, and they sometimes pick their spots with him. He can be a problem for opponents. If he can get in better shape and overcome his maturity issues going into next season (the Z-Bo comparison doesn't end on the court), he's got some real potential to be a force in this conference.

Of course, Radford has a guy who is already a force in the Big South, Carlik Jones, and are the complete opposite of Winthrop in terms of experience. Radford is one of the oldest teams in the country and are probably the deserved favorites. As Winthrop was going 12-0, Radford just kept winning too. Then they took out Winthrop on road (nearly blowing a huge second-half lead), which started the Eagles' tailspin.

Gardner-Webb, last year's surprise conference tournament champion, is a dark horse who is capable of making another run this season. G-W went 2-2 against Winthrop and Radford, while the rest of the Big South went 4-28. The two losses were by a combined 7 points, with the loss to Winthrop coming in triple OT, after some miraculous shots by the Eagles. It's probably going to be either Winthrop or Radford who wins this thing, but if there is a cinderella, it's probably Gardner-Webb.

Watching the North Alabama-Stetson game now. Stetson has got to have the biggest stairs to seats ratio in the country. Like 40% of the bleachers are stairs.

The first 2 days of March Madness are obviously the best 2 "workdays" of the year. However today is one of my favorite traditions. The Mountain West tournament is held every year on the campus of my alma mater, UNLV. Every year for the last 20 years or so I try my best to take today off and go down to the campus for a day of reminiscing, drinking beer, eating too many hot dogs and watching 4 basketball games in a row. I hope I never grow up.

I'm not able to watch since I'm at work, but looks like Winthrop is doing what they do: taking a bunch of 3s, making a good % of them, and owning the offensive glass. That's been their formula all season.

1 seed in the Big South Radford down 29-27 at halftime, on their home court, to 8 seed Charleston Southern. That would be a shocker, but still a long way to go.

Radford had a stretch where they went almost six minutes without scoring, allowing CSU to go on a 12-1 run and get back into it.

Carlik Jones predictably taking over in the second half for Radford. Charleston Southern still hanging in there as best they can, but I'm not sure they can sustain against this.

Radford lead 50-45 with about seven minutes left.

Northern Iowa with a 21-point blowout loss in the MVC quarterfinals. They were 25-6 and a pretty impressive record but that's a very bad loss to end your season on in hopes of an at-large bid.

I'm nervous for Winthrop's matchup with Gardner-Webb that's about to tip-off at 6pm, but this is the consequence of going 3-3 down the stretch (and I still can't figure out what tie-breaker made Radford the 1 seed). Not only did it cost the Eagles home court, but now they have to play the only other good team (a relative term when discussing the Big South) besides Radford. And their reward for beating G-W, if they do, will almost certainly be playing Radford on their home court. For a team that started off 12-0 in conference, not exactly what we had in mind a month ago.

It's a tough road, but Winthrop will have earned it if they can pull it off. With their style of play, I don't think they'd be an easy out in the NCAAs either (obviously, I'm biased).

He's a crucial player for Winthrop, and he does some good things, but just about everything that Chandler Vaudrin does on the court looks ugly. Especially his free throws. They should show his shooting form to kids and be like, "Don't ever shoot like this idiot."

Winthrop advances 78-66 over Gardner-Webb, placing them in the Big South Championship Game, Sunday at 1pm on ESPN. It's always a treat when I get to watch Winthrop on national TV. Doesn't happen very often.

Go Hampton! (Radford will probably clean their clocks.)

BU up 35-22 over Bucknell at halftime. Winner plays the Lafayette-Colgate winner in the Patriot League final.

Winthrop-Hampton kicking off in Rock Hill SC (shoutouts to Ben Watson and Stephon Gilmore) for the Big South title. Winthrop is looking to win and dance for the first time since 2017. Hampton has never won the Big South, but this is only their second season in the league. Their last NCAA tournament appearances came in 2015 and 2016, when they were winners of the MEAC.

Winthrop ice cold from the field to start, 0-7. Yet they're 3-4 from the FT line, where they typically aren't very good. It's bizarro Winthrop. Vaudrin somehow made 2 straight free throws, after going 2-10 from the charity stripe (no, really) in the semis. He got fouled on a three in that game and missed all 3 FTs.

Chandler Vaudrin is such a weird fucking player. He's like a poor homeless goofy white man's Ben Simmons.

Winthrop lives by the three and dies by the three. It's killing them today as they're now 2-18.

Still a long way to go, but they need to either start making some damn shots or just give it to Burns in the post every time down the court.

CAA quarterfinals today.

1-seed Hofstra advanced in the early game, knocking off Drexel. Northeastern plays the late game against Towson. Northeastern had a mediocre regular season, but was a popular dark horse pick. Charleston and Delaware is the other game this afternoon.

William & Mary is the 2-seed and opens against Elon this evening. W&M is one of 4 original D1 programs to never make it to the NCAA tournament. One of these years they’ll get over the hump and it will be fun.

Winthrop will be dancing for the 11th time in school history after a 76-68 win over Hampton.

Still a long way to go, but they need to either start making some damn shots or just give it to Burns in the post every time down the court.
Winthrop chose the latter and it turned the game around. There was a stretch where Hampton just had no answer for D.J. Burns in the post, as he scored 12 of his 16 points in the second half. Then they finally started hitting some threes (finished hitting 3 of their last 6, after starting 2-18) and that was all she wrote. Great defensive game from them too, after Hampton was lights out to start.

Pretty cool to hear that Chris Paul facetimed with the team before the game. He shares a connection with Pat Kelsey, who was an assistant under the late Skip Prosser when Paul played at Wake Forest.

Northern Iowa's loss is Bradley's gain, as they win the Missouri Valley Conference tournament for the second straight season, with an 80-66 victory over Valparaiso.

Here are the automatic bids thus far:

Winthrop - Big South
Bradley - Missouri Valley
Utah St. - Mountain West
Belmont - Ohio Valley

Liberty has a 66-50 lead over Lipscomb with five minutes left, so you can probably pencil them in as the Atlantic Sun champion.

East Tennessee State and Western Carolina are currently squaring off for the Southern Conference title. ETSU with the big early lead at 31-15, with seven and a half minutes left in the first half.

Couple of really good games out west last night. Gonzaga got punched in the face multiple times by the Dons last night and still found a way to survive and advance thanks to Joel Ayayi and the teams ability to finally make late FTs.

Saint Mary's beat BYU on a jumper by Jordan Ford with 1.4 seconds left in the game to advance them to the WCC finals against Gonzaga. If SMC beats Gonzaga tonight the WCC expected to have 3 bids in the NCAA tournament.

The Ivy League has canceled its conference tournament because of the threat of Coronavirus. Yale, the regular season champion, will get the NCAA Tournament bid.
As a loyal Yale fan, all I can say is "Bravo, Corona Virus!"

Seriously, how is it okay to send your team to play in front of 20,000 people in Spokane or
Dayton or wherever after canceling your conference tournament?

It was pretty clear in December that they were not going to be very good. Add in injuries, all the bad luck, and self-inflicted damage, and it's not real surprising.

If someone told you in December they’d be the 14 seed you wouldn’t have been very surprised? You are correct that it didn’t look like they would be very good. But they’re not even on the NCAA bubble. Losing season. That’s shocking.

Someone somewhere suggested in January that the Huskies would be a team that nobody would want to face come the conference tournament. I laughed because you cannot fix stupid......and this may be one of the lowest BBIQ college teams I've ever seen. I have not seen them play in a couple weeks but yes, I also noticed that price which has them way undervalued at best and borderline ridiculous at worst even if I'm not a fan of this team. Not opposed to throwing pizza money on them at that price.

I work tangentially with the Wofford b-ball team, and I thought it would be a big statement game when Wofford beat UNC in December. Turns out I was right - I just didn't realize that it was a statement by UNC, not Wofford

Fans chucked from the ACCT now:
Statement from the Atlantic Coast Conference (Wednesday, March 11):
In light of the rapidly changing landscape regarding COVID-19, the latest developments nationally from health authorities and today’s announcement by the NCAA COVID-19 Advisory Panel, the ACC will alter the remainder of the ACC Tournament.

After consultation with the league’s presidents and athletic directors, it was determined that beginning Thursday, March 12, all games will be played with only essential tournament personnel, limited school administrators and student-athlete guests, broadcast television and credentialed media members present.
