Fill me in on this. Carts have GPS that only lets them go into certain areas? So if you roam off the cart path it auto stops?

I have honestly never heard of this before. Is the reasoning that the carts were ruining the course?
Yep - my course had this. It was used to enforce cart path only on the days it was needed, keep carts away from the greens, and allow them to monitor where carts were on the course. It was especially useful since they had a ton of outings/scramble tourneys, so people who weren't members were constantly on the course.

Members figured out how to get around it if necessary, but only if absolutely necessary. You can pop it into ranger mode to see where everyone is on the course, or make it handicap accessible to allow to skip the restricted areas.

It's called geofencing and it's super annoying. It's implemented 20 different ways and some are worse than others. The most annoying disable the cart completely while playing a loud beeping. None of them tell you how to recover from the mistake.

Carts have always been restricted to certain areas (not on greens, or in bunkers or on tees) but now it's enforcable by technology, not just rangers.

On the plus side, they provide easy yardages, shared scorecards, pace of play tracking/warnings and the ability to see where other carts are on the course for blind shots.
Plus you can order lunch for the turn!

Interesting. Thank you all for the responses.

I've always thought the "no greens and bunkers" was kind of obvious when carts were involved, but I guess not!

I've always thought the beeping when in reverse was annoying as hell, so I can't even imagine your cart not moving and just constantly beeping.

Ok, suncreen for golf? What are people using? I can't stand having my hands be slippery at all when taking a swing so I just generally don't wear sunscreen. Even the spray shit gets on my hands as soon as I sweat and wipe it out of my eyes. Anyone use a sunscreen that's sweat proof and dries either dry or even tacky within a minute or 2 of application? Melanoma seems like a small price to pay to not throw my clubs into someone or shank a ball into someone.

So the Foreplay guys are playing Kisner at Pinehurst No 2 next week from the US Open tees (7500 yards, par 70). The 4 of them are playing a scramble (two of them are 7s, one is a 10, one is a 25+), Kiz his own ball obviously. Kiz is going to dust them, but I'll be interested in what the final scores are.

I bet Kiz shoots 68-70, the scramble comes in around 73-75. They're just going to be too far away to make many birdies, this isn't like playing the 6300 yard white tees at a charity tourney where you get 4 wedges into every green and 4 looks for birdie from 10 feet. They're also going to take some stupid chances because it's a scramble and it will backfire on them I bet.

Either way, it's a pretty interesting thought experiment.

Yeah, Kiz will smoke them but it will be entertaining. They played at Palmetto a few months ago before the virus hit. That round he played match play with Riggs giving Riggs 12 shots and that match was over by 15 I think. Then Kiz played the last 3 holes deep into his beer cooler and with only a 5-iron and still beat him easily. IIRC, Riggs might’ve beaten Scott Brown but I’m not sure what format they used. Kiz gave Frankie something like 25 shots in stroke play and that wasn’t even close either. Kiz is has a great personality that you don’t really see on tour and is an epic shit talker.

Edit: I bet the scramble will come in closer to 80

I never use sunscreen. It's a double edged sword, you'll either get cancer from the sun or you'll get it from the sunscreen.

Some people say to use sunblock instead of sunscreen as it's less likely to absorb into skin, but it's made out of heavy metals, so who knows. Heavy metals have been associated with Alzheimer's and mental disorders.

Ever thought about sun sleeves? I'm probably going to go this route and I've gone to wearing mostly pants (can find some light and breathable options these days). I wear a face lotion that has some sunblock for my face and neck.

I started wearing an Aussie hat this year. Being bald it’s tough to go all summer with the tan lines on my head. Admittedly it looks goofy but IDGAF.

Yeah, my wife is a health nut so researches things like what chemicals absorb at what rates and such and has sent me stuff to try but it all sucks. I'm with you. I never wear sunscreen except on the beach on tropical islands so I don't get burned. This is all an effort to attempt to appease my wife so she keeps telling me to play golf as often as possible for the exercise. I'm already pushing it with the drinking and cigars while I play so this doesn't seem like the hill to die on yet.

Got out on Red Tail yesterday afternoon and broke my personal record with a 75 - slight caveat that one of my birdies was on the usually tough par 3 3rd hole was a 70 yarder with the tees all moved up due to tee box work. Overall though, as a 8-10 handicap historically, I couldn't ask for more from the first few rounds this year.

So my Bandon trip followed by this spring's forced walking has turned me into a huge walking fan now. I thoroughly enjoy the course more, I get to actually see the whole hole regardless of where I hit it, and I appreciate everything that much more. It's also much more calming and mentally relaxing in between shots, plus the exercise bonus is a huge plus too. Even when the restrictions ease I'm going to walk a majority of the time going forward.
I can't echo this enough. I also think the pacing of walking hugely aids the mental side of the game - if you hit a bad shot walking, your next action isn't to hop out of the cart and swing again - you have time to reflect on what went wrong, plan your next shot, get the blood pumping a bit, and really get it out of your system. The only thing I'm doing if anything is playing a bit too fast around the greens and not taking enough time to read greens, but that's always been an issue for me.

It also definitely helps that I've not been 5-6 deep for these rounds...

During normal times, you aren't even allowed to walk our course before noon. Every group in the morning is expected to play in under 3.5 hours. Period. And if you stick a group of walkers out there in the middle of them, it'll slow up the whole course. That's why I never got into it. When I've gone on the road and had a choice between riding or walking with a caddy, I'll take the caddy every time. But I ain't fucking carrying my bag. No sir. I could barely walk for 3 days after last weekend.
We have the cart or caddy before 1pm rule as well. I don't find it in any way reduces round times though, slow players are slow players. Cynically, I think the cart rule is just about padding the club budget and the caddie requirement is a pet program for some older long-time members that they force on the rest of us. I hate it. I tend to walk a 3-3.5 hour round with another player so I'm probably on the faster side but there are a bunch of members who can jet while carrying if unobstructed.

No chance of that in our club. The morning rounds are full of 70 and 80+ year olds, some of whom would walk if given the chance. We play with 8 or 10 minute tee times, so if you fall even a half hole behind, you're clogging up the entire course, and if that happens at 8:00 a.m., the groups going out at 10:00 will end up playing 4+ hour rounds. I agree if we kept it at 15 minute tee times, then it likely wouldn't have as dramatic of an effect, but if you stick 4 walkers in the middle of the course with everyone around them using carts, they will fall behind. No way around it. On some of the holes, with a long walk between the green and the next tee, they wouldn't even reach the next tee box before the guys behind them were putting out. On the weekends, I play with the group of guys in our Robin that has the first 4-5 tee times every morning, and we play our rounds in under 3 hours with carts in foursomes. Without carts, it's almost impossible for us to play in less than 3:30, just because of the hills and the distance between some holes.

Is your club private? 8 minute tee times are absurd anywhere, let alone a private club. It would lead to 6 hour rounds at the semi-private club I worked at on busier weekends (e.g., Memorial Day in normal times) when every handicap crawls out of the woodwork and the tee sheet is booked solid from 6 AM to about 4 PM.

Yeah, it's private (Andover CC). Usually, it's 10 minutes, but sometimes, they'll drop it to 8 if they expect a lot of players. Almost nobody goes out after 12:00 p.m. except on Fridays, because that's when women are allowed on the course (except the one woman who pays a full membership and plays from the tips as a 7 handicap) and most of them walk, and take forever even though they usually only play 9 holes. Then there is a big gap until about 3:00 p.m. when the junior members are allowed out. If we were playing in four hours, there would be a revolt from the membership, fistfights on tee boxes and the pro would be dragged out of the shop and beaten. They only take two things seriously there, the pace of play and gambling. Maybe three, we drink a lot.

Yesterday, 4 pm tee time at my club, myself wife and son -- walking. We are behind a foursome playing a ladder match, all with carts. When they teed off, they had a group ahead of them, but by 3rd hole that group was over a hole ahead, and 3 holes by the end of the nine. We were waiting to hit on every hole. On 8th, a par three, the group behind us (also walking) actually met us on the tee as the foursome finished putting out. That being said, we still played the nine in 2 hours, which is not awful. We just would have done it in 1:40 or so without the blockage.

Our course has been really busy, but I think it'll thin a bit with the state opening up things and people go back to work locations.

Clears, are you looking to join Patterson, or just play it? I've vaguely heard of it. It's an old GE created club. Course looks nice, and seems family friendly. Initiation is in line with expensive Fairfield County standards.

In COVID related new. the CT Dept of Economic and Community Development (DECD) has authorized this tweak to the golf cart rules allowing a divider in a power cart:

The divider must be fitted into the entire area of the cart from the windscreen to the floor to the inside roof, between the seating area and into the back of the cart to provide a complete barrier between the driver and passenger, as well as the equipment of both players. The divider must be fixed and attached, and along with the entire cart, must be sanitized after each use. During each use, the driver of the cart must remain the only driver at all times. Once out of the cart and in open space, the driver and passenger must continue to maintain social distancing at a minimum of 6 feet.

The CT golf lobby did put in to get allow a members of same household in same cart exception under best practices. Seems if it's OK to share meals together, drive to course together , and occassionally swap body fluids together, it would be OK to ride in a cart outdoors together. That DECD cart divider rule clearly was conceptualized by people who don't play a lot of golf.

Or it completely swamps you with too many swing thoughts and adrenaline and makes things worse. It can bite both ways.

Though I don't do it myself, I find walking and carrying to be quicker IF the players know what they're doing and route accordingly. Watching two guys walk to one ball then across the fairway to the other guys ball, so they can chat or whatever, is infuriating to be behind. Much like most things golf, if they're conscientious and split up off the tee, it can be much quicker than a cart.

At our club, the pro shop would have been called by the 4th hole, they would have come out, told them to pick up the pace. First warning. If they didn't, by the 6th hole, they would have been forced to pick up their balls and move to the next tee. If that didn't work, they would be forced to leave, and their membership suspended for a a few days to a few weeks.

If for some reason the pro shop didn't answer or intervene, the result would be golf balls being driven directly over their head, yelling and screaming from the group behind every time once of them went into a back swing. And then it would escalate from there....

Shot an 88 today and lost at least four balls. Can't figure out what's going wrong w my driver. It feels like my hands aren't turning over. The good news is it can't be worse so making changes is a free roll
Turns out I was gripping it too strong and mentally I wouldn't let my hands turn over. My club was a good 20 degrees shut at the top. I went to a more neutral grip and found my normal fluidity and driver swing. Still hitting a little on the heel and across it, so the bombs aren't there but it's refreshing to keep it in play. Leraning to correct flaws on the course was huge step for me. Now if I can just stop standing up on short chips. I also can't hit my hybrid so I picked up a Srixon 2 iron to stopgap that problem.

Not yet. I will once I can talk myself into spending $2k or, better yet, talk @kelpapa into buying one.
I'd consider paying 2k to go to a driving range so a radar at that price feels like a bargain.

So the Foreplay guys are playing Kisner at Pinehurst No 2 next week from the US Open tees (7500 yards, par 70). I don't think either go that low. It's going to be match play so I'm not sure who that benefits, but Kiz is going to have his caddie Duey on the bag and he's a Pinehurst member. I'd expect Kiz around 74 and the group around 78. Foreplay has an interesting scramble team. Riggs is decent at everything and has been at Pinehurst for a month, Frankie and Lurch and pretty long, and Trent is surprisingly accurate off the tee. I think they have a chance if they all play near their potential, but I'm expecting Trent and Frankie to meltdown and be largely useless.

I hope it doesnt take a month for them to release it. I'm more interested in this than the Taylormade Challenege

Got out on Red Tail yesterday afternoon and broke my personal record with a 75 - slight caveat that one of my birdies was on the usually tough par 3 3rd hole was a 70 yarder with the tees all moved up due to tee box work. That's a damn good score there. I played there twice and both times I played too bad to appreciate it.

LOL. That's insane. No chance that'd ever happen at this place. IIRC, our target standard is 4 hours, or 4:10. Generally, slow play is not an issue, but it'll happen everyone once in awhile. That being said, I miss the 15 minutes between tee times - we are down to 10.

Your club sounds miserable.
Honestly, it's a great club. Everyone knows this going in. On the weekends, if I tee off at 7:00 a.m, I can get 36 in by around 1:00 p.m. and be home for lunch. It's very, very rare that we ever run into slow play. I can only remember probably two times over the course of the 15+ years I've been there that my group has been involved in a situation where the people in front of us got out of position so badly that it required intervention. It's just the way it's always been. For the first 80 years, it was a pretty blue collar club with postal workers, cops, firefighters, etc. and most of them would sneak out before work or after work and they played lightning fast to get the rounds in, and that tradition continues til now.

Justin Hueber, a KFT grinder, showed up at #2 and played the US open tees having never seen the course before and shot 69, and felt he left some out there. I’d be shocked if Kiz shoots over 70 there, especially witn Dewey on the bag.

Yeah we’ll see how they shoot I don’t know. I’m guessing Kiz is a little more on than DJ but probably not 100%.

I would guess you’d see those guys if you’re there on the same day. Hell I’d probably rather watch it live than play a round. What tees are you going to play? I’d guess your landing area is 50 yards ahead of the foreplay group on the 4s and 5s

Depends on my game at the moment. I’ve played it from the blues and that was too long (7k). I’ll either do the whites or the putterboy combos (6500). Hell I’ll probably do both since I’m playing it Sunday too.

That course is something else around the greens. So much fun though.

I've often thought if I played a course like Augusta or Pinehurst, I'd want to play the tees that allow me to have the same irons or distances into the greens that the pros have. So my tee box would be roughly 50 yards up. I'm not as familiar with Pinehurst but at Augusta I'd want a 7 iron into 1, a long iron into 2, and a wedge into 3.

IIRC, when I played New Seabury and Pocasset I think they had the GPS carts too. They auto stopped a ton when I veered off even a bit to find a wayward shot.

I remember when I played it, we met our caddies, and after saying hello, they handed each of our group our putter and told us to practice with it off the nearby turtleneck practice green for 10 minutes before we teed off.

Putting isn’t even the hardest part (and it’s far from easy). Landing approach shots is impossible and trying to chip/pitch and hold it is equally impossible. Being greenside is just so demoralizing because you know you’re so screwed. Once you actually get the ball to stay on the green, the putts aren’t that bad.

Putting is harder on #4 I think, everything else is harder on #2.

I reserve the right to update this opinion in a week.

This is the correct approach. If you’re hitting fairway woods/4-5 irons into these greens, as I was when I played the blues, you’re screwed. Play a tee forward off, and try to hit 8-9 irons into the greens, it’s a much better experience. The tee game there is relatively easy. It’s really hard to lose a ball on #2.

Yeah, if I wasn’t clear, they had us practice with putters from off the green at the bottom of the valleys around the greens, to get a feel for hitting a shot that one would normally chip.

That is 100% the correct the move.

I once showed up at a nice golf course in Florida and ended up being paired with a woman who putted out of greenside bunkers. I've been doing it ever since when there's no lip to worry about.

If you know the proper technique, escaping a greenside bunker and getting close to the hole from a normal lie in most circumstances ought to be much easier than pitching or chipping from equivalent spots around a green, because a) there's very little variance in the type of lies you'll get, as sand is usually uniformly maintained around a course in a way that grass can't be, and b) having sand underneath the ball gives you a cushion that you won't have when playing from the fairway, and which isn't predictable when playing from thicker grass. When I was a kid I found bunkers to be horrible hazards that freaked me out, but one day when I was 9 or 10 I was at a facility with a really good set of practice bunkers, and I just resolved to figure it out - I had studied some tips in a golf magazine somewhere, I think, and I spent three or four hours experimenting with different swing planes and points of entry into the sand behind the ball and then repeating the options that worked, and literally from that point onward I was a good bunker player. I've seen a few players (mostly older ladies) who aren't strong enough to get the ball out of deep bunkers, but otherwise I firmly believe that anyone can figure out how to play bunker shots properly and well - it's just takes a combination of technical knowledge and mental resilience to purge the fear that most golfers initially have of bunkers.

Meanwhile, here in Scotland it looks like we might get the go-ahead to start playing golf a week from today, with players from no more than two households in the same group:
https://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/sport/golf/may-29-set-target-date-scottish-golf-courses-reopen-2860683That article suggests that travel to a course "should be within the local vicinity" - i.e., no more than five miles - which will be interesting for my club insofar as around half of our members live in or near Edinburgh, much more than five miles away. Methinks that rule will be observed in the breach.

Humorously, my wife is part of a North Berwick group on Facebook, and someone yesterday posted how wonderful it's been to be allowed to walk all across the golf course these past couple of months and asked if that privilege shouldn't perhaps be allowed to continue once the course reopened for play? When a barrage of posts - many of the four-letter variety - suggested that maybe this wasn't a good idea, someone else suggested that maybe the two courses in North Berwick should be opened on alternate days so that walkers could have them one day and golfers the next. Heh.

I got my first round of the year in yesterday at Hyannisport. It was easily a 2-3 club wind, and the greens were firm and fast, and resulted in an 87, which is my highest round in a few years. It was awesome to get out there, and HP is an absolute gem of a course. It seemed like they were really good about all aspects of social distancing...the range and putting green were closed, and they had us wait for the group in front of us to finish the first hole before teeing off. We didn't see anyone out there the erst of the day.

I also can't hit my hybrid so I picked up a Srixon 2 iron to stopgap that problem.
How do you like this club? What distance are you getting? I'm terrible off the ground with woods/hybrids and have started looking for a new 2 iron. I bought a new set of Callaway Apex Pros irons last seasons 3-PW - and those have been great, but after adding another wedge to my bag, I now have a gap in the 205-220 yardage.

I don't have it yet -- I bought it on WRX. I've hit the previous version tho, and I liked it. The u85 has a much better shaft too. My hybrid used to be my best club and now it's my worst. After I lost a match on 18 with it it's been on the shelf. I hit long irons relatively well so I think it'll be a good fit. Looking to get about 210-220 out of it. It'll be here Sunday.

Sounds exactly what i am looking for. I haven't seen a lot of options, but I admittedly haven't looked that hard. Thanks - hope it works well for you.

So Wachusett’s an absolute disaster. Running 20 minutes behind with 5 groups on holes 1 & 2 - got a sneaking suspicion they’re not using 15 minute spacing for tee times
