And Boston College has slipped in recent years. They haven’t made a Frozen Four since 2016.
His final years were better than most coaches of the same age/reputation (certainly Coach K was an exception to that). 4th ranked in 2019-20; 6th in 2020-21.

This year, however, a dud and at some point I'm sure other schools were using his age as a recruiting tool. All in all, a good time to leave. Hello, Jim Boeheim!

I'm going by how thoroughly MSU had shut Denver down through two periods and how many good chances they had during that interval.

Maybe that wasn't representative, but it seemed to track with how they had played against Minnesota and previously in the tournament.

All of that having been said, on this night, Denver was able to keep MSU from turning their chances into goals, capitalized on their chances in the third, and MSU never even sniffed a comeback.
I know I'm late to this party but haven't been on SoSH much over the past week or so. I watched this final and found myself rooting for Minnesota State. Maybe it was because their goalie was the Hobey Baker winner, assuming I read the crawl correctly.

I completely agree with your shutdown comment. But while Denver may have been better than they showed in the first two periods, I thought MSU seriously coughed it up in the third. They looked like they preferred to sit on a one goal lead and they looked tired. On the other hand Denver looked charged up and highly motivated. They out-skated MSU for the entire third period.

It reminded me of a Herb Brooks line from the Miracle movie. "You may not be the best hockey team in Lake Placid but you will be the best conditioned," which of course later proved true in the Russian game.

Doubtless Denver was the better conditioned team in this match up.

After reading the article.

There is nothing wrong with how this played out. Absolutely nothing.

Actually, the suspension should have been 4 months instead of 6.
I don’t buy the defense. Too easy to plan the defense in advance, then simply take the drug…

That said, I am interested to hear the “inside baseball” on this. I have friends whose son played against this guy in the Frozen Four and are likely to have strong opinions…I am interested to hear what they have to say.

Scary thought w/r/t Class of '96: when I was at BU in the 80s, we'd sometimes play in the varsity coaches/athletic dept. pickup basketball games. Jackie Parker, with his head full of white hair, seemed so old to us.

Took my son last night to the ULowell/UAlaska Anchorage game. I think Lowell came in ranked #13 in the country, and Alaska showed up with a 2-12 record.

I've never seen anything like it. Lowell outshot them 54-12 (yes, not a typo) and lost the game 4-2 (last one was an empty netter). Lowell led after 1 period 1-0, outshooting them 18-3.

They led 2-1 after 2, outshooting them 41-8. Then Alaska got the "you let them hang around goal" to tie it up, the flukey bounce rebound goal to take the lead, and the empty net to seal it.

The goalie for Alaska, whose last name is "Whale" (which is fucking awesome by the way), stood on his head like almost nothing I've ever seen. He was their best player on the ice by a margin so wide it was ridiculous. Even the 2 he gave up he just had no chance it, and Lowell also hit 3 different pipes on slap shots.

They play again this weekend, and I imagine Lowell beats them like 8-0, but wow, what a fucking weird one to be at.

I live 5 minutes from Sacred Heart University. They open a new, on-campus arena on 1/14, and I grabbed season tickets for the (remainder of) this season. My son and I snuck into the place last weekend to check it out, and it’s a fantastic looking facility. Hoping to his helps recruitment and propels SHU to be an Atlantic Hockey power.

Any chance SHU would ever fill the open spot in Hockey East if they can elevate play to another level with this new arena?
Ironically I’m going to UConn’s rink grand opening scheduled for the same day.

I’m certain SHU would lovvvvve that. But would Hockey East want them? Seems like Hockey East would have already invited Quinnipiac if they wanted another strong, CT-based team. But I’m the furthest thing from an expert on college hockey.

Went to the new arena opening at SHU last night. The place is amazing. Bright, modern, wide concourses, big video board, two large concession stands, free parking, beer… just a first class facility in every way. And large. There was a sold out crowd of 4,100 there.

Hopefully it helps a lot with recruiting and SHU can become a power in their conference.

I’m pretty sure this anthem singer is tone deaf. The first one was bad too but at least she could keep a pitch.

Levi was 100% the difference last night for the Huskies, although they did have more sustained pressure in the offensive end than I'd expected. Two really good teams.

D3 Prediction:

Utica is not for real as the #1 seed. They'll get beat, probably by Adrian but maybe before. Program wants to go D1 but even with some great players, they have played an extremely soft schedule that is almost certainly going to bite them in the tush!

Blind squirrel and broken clocks twice a day and so forth....

Utica gets bumped in their first game of the tournament, 14 minutes into overtime by Maine's own University of New England in what was, really, a bonkers, awesome, hockey game. Wow.

UNE held a 4-1 lead pretty deep into the third and at that point Utica was playing into exactly the script I imagined for them -- hard to win against good teams when your season has been against a bunch of patsys. Utica looked like an "all star" team not realizing the other team was going to try to play D and not just roll over.

But in the last 12 minutes Utica became a different animal and found their game and just poured it on for three goals to tie. They then mostly dominated the OT.

Their obvious weakness was that they really had not had much experience having to defend against peer level teams and UNE, you know, just found a moment 14 minutes into the OT period. They scored on a crazy, blind pass from behind the goal that never found its man because it banked off a scrambling, diving goalie facing the wrong way and it ended up in the back of the net.

Great hockey. I'd go to a UNE game if I could. Fun team to watch.

Harvard couldn’t quite get there as Colgate won ECAC final 3-2. Hate the schedule… Harvard wrapped up its OT win at 11p last night, then had to play final at 730. The extra 3 hours of rest for ‘Gate could’ve been the difference.

But can’t deny Colgate played smart, opportunistic hockey and really contained Harvard’s snipers. Great game!

If you are in Eastern MA and have the time, Endicott is hosting the D3 frozen four next weekend. With a little luck the final could be two schools -- Endicott and UNE -- separated by a 90 mile drive on I 95.

This should be some excellent hockey.

Why this is not at a neutral site with a more 'big time' feel is a mystery.

any idea of the dates and times of the games? The Div 3 website says "tba". Also, can you just walk up and buy a ticket? Thanks!

ECAC got 4 bids to the tournament; Hockey East got 2.

Had Harvard been the top seed they get the early game on semifinal Friday. They were second to Quinnipiac. That’s the way it works.

Beyond embarrassing performance by Harvard. What does Ted Donato even do there outside of recruiting?
