The 718
You know how we do. Let's have at it. And let's pray that COVID doesn't trouble us, here and in more important things.

1. Liverpool. Some concern about fatigue and title hangover, but they're here based on the strength of their back four. No other contender can match it.

2. ManU. A full season with Bruno, Marital, Rashford & co. I think they have the quality to bank more points than any of their rivals.

3. Chelsea. Will all of these acquisitions mesh? They have such numbers that Frank will have a whole season to hit on the right combo. Still not sold on their defence.

4. City. With those players and Pep they can win the whole thing, but I'm not feeling it. Ake is not enough to shore up the defence. Foden's emergence is a great thing but they will miss Dilva. If they bring in Koubliay (sp?) or others then this could be higher but for now I put them here. Of course all bets are off with Messi.

5. Tough between Arsenal and Spurs. I never thought Jose was a good fit for Spurs but Doherty and Hojberg, while not glamorous, are exactly the kind of solid players he needed. I like what Arteta has done at Arsenal but on the balance I have to go with Spurs.

6. Arsenal.

7. Everton. Claiming the Everton Trophy as their birthright. As usual I can claim that they've won the offseason with James, Allan, and Docoure. There is a legit criticism that after the midfield was a dumpster fire, they overloaded there, left themselves with a lot of deadwood that needs clearing out and neglected problem areas elsewhere - a lack of pace and width is a concern. But they won't be ripped apart in the middle of the park anymore, and with Allan's ball-winning ability, Doucoure as the energetic box-to-box guy, and James as a creator, the DCL/Richarlison partnership up top looks very promising - they did pretty well last season with the likes of Tom Davies, the corpse of Gylfi Sigurdsson, and the one-legged Andre Gomes (not) supplying them, so with good service they could run wild. (I secretly hope for higher if everything clicks, but I don't want to bait Zomp).

8. Southampton. Saints were dreadful at the start of last season, including a 9-0 thumping by the Foxes, but Ralph turned it around and this is a solid squad. Hojberg will be missed, and they're counting on Ings to repeat a career season, so there are some ifs here. Still I think this is the squad with the best feeling about it out of the remaining sides.

9. Sheffield United. Love what Wilder did last season. Ramsdale is a good addition. Not enough firepower to go higher and I think the league has figured them out, but this is a coherent side that fights hard and is a tough nut to crack.

10. Leicester. Vardy's another year older, Chilwell is gone, Barnes and Maddison are good but not great, they looked awful down the stretch. Not enough here.

11. Wolves. With Doherty gone and Nuno's penchant for running the same XI into the ground, I think they tire out.

12. Newcastle. Now with more Bournemouth! The quintessential mid-table team. Decent, not threatening to be more than that.

13. Leeds. They ride the excitement of being back. Could go higher.

14. Brighton. Now the clubs start to run together. Ben White is a great addition. Lalanna too IF he has anything left. The man-mountian that is Lewis Dunk is to be reckoned with. They'll stay out of the drop zone.

15. Palace. Eze and Michy back from loan are a shot of adrenaline. They ended poorly but there's enough there to stay around this area of the table, mostly because what's below them is worse.

16. West Ham. Feh.

17. Aston Villa. If Grealish stays. If not they go down.

18. Burnley. Anti-football.

19. West Brom. Hello Goodbye.

20. Fulham. See West Brom.

1. City - too much attacking talent. Ake isn’t a cureall, but he doesn’t make mistakes. A healthy Laporte will be a big addition, too.

2. Liverpool - We’re about to test if the ol’ “refresh the squad” bromide is true.

3. ManU - not a complete team, but when you’re gifted a PK per week, it’s hard to lose.

4. Chelsea - still not sold on Lampard the manager, and he now has a lot of new players to bed in and no real improvements in central defense. Of course, Kante covers up for a lot (if he isn’t sold).

5. Arsenal - Great tactics can overcome a lot.

6. Spurs - bad tactics can expose a lot.

7. Leicester - bad after the restart, but still a very balanced squad with plenty of talent and coaching.

8. Soton - surprise climber of the season. The hardest pressing team of last season with a better grasp of the tactics and no Europe to wear them down.

9. Everton - the extreme makeover midfield edition was necessary, but the wings look vulnerable and who is organizing the defense?

10. Wolves - I think a bigger club swoops in for Traore before the season is out.

11. Sheffield United

12. Leeds - they’re gonna poach points all over the place. Fewer matches in the EPL means more recovery time for tired legs and more strategizing for Bielsa.

13. Brighton.

14. Newcastle -same as the old castle.

15. Crystal Palace

16. Fulham - it’s a more cohesive team this time around.

17. West Ham - it’s their fate to sweat it out until the very last moments of injury time of match 38 but somehow, some way stay up.

18. Burnley - at some point you have to score goals.

19. West Brom

20. Villa

Its hard to do this before the end of the transfer window but as things stand...

1. City - Superior quality depth to Liverpool, and some luck reverting to the mean, will make the difference.

2. Liverpool - Cohesive and talented enough to hold onto 2nd but I don't think they run City that close for the title. Too much wear on these tires and too little depth.

3. Chelsea - Too much offensive talent not to make top four (fairly comfortably), but defensive frailty and a mediocre manager prevent them from taking the next step.

4. United - Too much offensive talent not to make top four (barely), but defensive frailty and a mediocre manager prevent them from taking the next step.

5. Spurs - I don't think Mourinho is capable of building them into a side that can consistently dominate weaker teams and without that they'll drop too many points, even as his scheming keeps them competitive in matches against the top six.

6. Arsenal - Similar story to Spurs, although the problem is less the manager's tactics than the need for more talent infusion in central and attacking midfield. If Arsenal manage to add a couple important players in the rest of the window, then I would bump them up to 5th with a real chance of sneaking 4th if things come together.

7. Everton - Will benefit immensely from not playing in Europe while rivals do so.

8. Leicester - The restart really exposed their lack of depth and I expect that to continue to be the case in a year with very high fixture congestion.

9. Wolves - Things are getting a little stale and I see them falling off.

10. Leeds - They'll score enough goals to rack up a number of wins, while also being on the wrong end of some crooked scorelines when Bielsaball gets exposed.

11. Brighton - I like what they're building down there.

The contenders:
1. Man City. They are really good. Like crazy good.
2. Liverpool. I don't think Liverpool can sustain the magic again for a whole season. They're good but not thaaat good. Man City had significantly better underlying stats last year.

The chasers:
3. Chelsea. They're going to win a lot of games 4-2. The defense raises concerns but they have so much attacking firepower. Their depth in attack will be a weapon with the compressed schedule. Their biggest downside is goalkeeping.
4. Man Utd. I might bump them up to third if they sign Sancho. Dangerous at full strength but they're a little thin.

The next group, could maybe contend for a CL spot if things break right.
5. Leicester. They should have finished 4th last year and only missed it because everyone got hurt in the second half of the season. This is still a very good team if they can stay healthy.
6. Spurs. Who knows. One of the hardest teams to predict, I wouldn't be entirely shocked if they finished 3rd, 12th, or anywhere in between. There is still a lot of talent here if Jose can avoid feuding and find a tactical system that works. But there are a lot of ways for this to go wrong as well.
7. Wolves. Solid, boring, effective. They'll be good but not spectacular. High floor, low ceiling. One of the easiest teams to predict, not good enough to make the top 4 but too competent to fall below 8th or so.
8. Everton. Some real upside potential here but I think it will be a typical Everton season where they show flashes that make you think they could compete with anyone but struggle for consistency.
9. Arsenal. They have not been good for a while and I'm not convinced Arteta has solved their defensive woes yet. Some parts of this team look promising for the future but their attack depends heavily on a striker on the wrong side of 30. LIke Everton I think they will claim some scalps but struggle badly for consistency.

The solid midtable.
10. Sheffield United. A solid side with limited upside. Hard to see them improving much.
11. Southampton. Could be frisky.
12. Burnley. They always end up ok.
13. Leeds. Forza Bielsa!

Welcome to the relegation fight:
14. Brighton. Yawn.
15. West Ham. They really should be better than this but then they never are. Probably too much talent to get relegated but I want to see some proper mid-table form before I move them out of this group.
16. Palace. They are bad and old. But Michy Bats will help and they aren't quite as bad as the four I have below them. Some serious implosion potential here though.
17. Newcastle. Lucky to avoid the relegation battle last year.

Goodbye:
18. West Brom. I've got nothing.
19. Aston Villa. Lucky to escape last year.
20. Fulham. Thanks for playing.

Takeaways so far.....
Everyone believes in Leeds (Bielsa)
Nobody believes in WBA.....

Which probably means Bielsa quits in a rage mid-season and Grady Diang becomes Slaven Billic's new Dimitri Payet as they cruise to a top half finish.

1.Liverpool .. 17 points is a pretty big deficit for City to overcome. Not that I think Liverpool are as good as their record .. expect a bit of a drop off.
2..Man City -- see above - if they bring in Koulibaly then I think they don't lose a game and win in a walk

3. Chelsea - tons of offensive talent - bad keeper - too much bedding in - next year though ..
4. Man United - we shall see if Fernandez is really that good (I suspect not)

5. Arsenal - been impressed by Arteta - if not the players
6. Spurs - Just don't see Jose bringing out the best in this team - they could surprise if Dele Ali's brother shows up.

In no particular order ..
Leicester - much depends on Vardy who was bad after the Restart and Madison - losing Chilwell hurts
Wolves - Is Traore a superstar in the making? If he is he'll fetch a fortune.
Everton - they do this every year - bring in a bunch of guys but its always same old mid table Everton

10. Southampton - really entertaining team to watch - Loves me some pressing
11. Leeds -- no idea what to make of them - anywhere between 11 and 15

12. Newcastle - interesting signings including Callum Wilson - I think they are a comfortable mid table side
13. Burnley - boring, anti football but dependably boring and anti football. One of these years they are going to pull a Sunderland and it will be decades before they are back in the Prem.
14. Brighton - I think they are going to surprise a lot of teams with a rock solid defense.
15. Sheffield - overlapping CBs ? One trick pony?

Any of these five could go down ..

16. West Ham - one bad year from Championship oblivion
17. Palace - ditto

18. WBA
19. Villa - not this time
20. Fulham

1. City - There’s a fun debate about whether City’s underlying stats are a real measure of their performance compared to Liverpool. City never take their foot off the gas, whereas the Reds tend to manage games they’re winning. City stats tend to look a bit better as a result. That said, they’re the best team in England right now and should be hungry.

2. ManU - It all comes together.

3. Chelsea - Werner wins the Golden Boot, PFA Player of the Year, Victoria Cross, a Bundesliga winner’s medal, the Golden Gloves, and a Nobel prize. All of this happens before Christmas. Klopp murders John Henry.

4. Liverpool - Here’s the thing... This side needs crowds. I genuinely believe that was part of their post-restart dip in form. Depending on how long the stadiums stay empty, they could rack up a points deficit they can’t recover. I also think a book is being written on countering their style. We’ll see how well Klopp can cope with motivational and systemic issues this season.

5. Arse - I actually might have put them in fourth, but they actually gave a contract to David Luiz. You can’t be that stupid and earn UCL football.

6. Wolves - The Portuguese national team without Ronaldo really comes together.

7. Everton - I think they’ve got the goods but will take awhile to find their cohesion.

8. Leicester - I needed a side to push Spurs down.

9. Spurs - Mourinho will be fired by the holidays and won’t get another job. Their second half is mostly one of resurgence but too little too late.

10. Southampton - LFC B side makes some noise.

1A. Liverpool - new season, new motivation. They had NOTHING to play for during the restart, title was already functionally theirs, and they were out of CL, and they looked every bit the side that was "going through the motions". Klopp flips from 4-3-3 to 4-2-3-1 a lot more this year to break their "predictability". I'd love to see them keep Gini while signing Thiago but don't know if that will happen. Another quality player to fill the Mane/Salah role would really go a long way as well. Short answer is they have shallow depth and are a long term injury away from trouble

1B. City - conversely, they have deep depth, particularly in attack. Defensively, still vulnerable as Ake doesn't really move the needle all that much. Like @Mighty Joe Young , I believe if they get Koulibaly, they become a stand alone 1. Recouping 20 points otherwise while still focusing on the CL Holy Grail is a tall ask.

2A. Chelsea - their menageries of players reminds me of the old Phoenix Suns, run and gun....lots of attacking prowess and they'll hope for the last shot so to speak

2B. United - thin all the way around and I'm not as confident that they put it all together

5. Wolves - they are a fun team to watch and I can see them pushing hard for #4 and CL but falling just short

6. Arsenal - Arteta needs a full year, but at least they appear to be aligning on the same page more often than before if not wuite more often than not

7. Everton - if not for Chelsea spending several countries combined GNP, they would have won the transfer window.....again

8. Spurs - I want so badly to drop them lower but they stagnated the most, so crazy 8's it is for the "special one"

9. Leicester - so much depends on Vardy not turning in to a pumpkin as his clock strikes midnight

10. Southampton - they have a spirit that is greater than their talent level and dead-smack mid-table is their ceiling

11. Sheffield United - they defends so compactly and so organized

12 - 14. Put them in any order, for all I know, the separation may be on goal differential only....Crystal Palace, Newcastle, and BHA

15. Leeds - I think the "crazy one", Bielsa, pulls off something of a miracle. They'll surprise a few teams for sure

16. West Ham - because they have to finish somewhere

17. Villa - the Prem is better with Grealish in it, and VIlla is better with Grealish on it, so here's to hoping they stay up

18 - 20. Not sure how they wind up, not that it really matters, but West Brom and Fulham have their cup of coffee before dropping and Burnley finally packs it tent as well

Through matchweek 8 (for most teams), the table is pretty wild.

Place Team Points
1 Leicester City 18
2 Tottenham 17
3 Liverpool 17
4 Southampton 16
5 Chelsea 15
6 Aston Villa 15
7 Everton 13
8 Crystal Palace 13
9 Wolves 13
10 Man City 12
11 Arsenal 12
12 West Ham 11
13 Newcastle 11
14 Man United 10
15 Leeds United 10
16 Brighton 6
17 Fulham 4
18 West Brom 3
19 Burnley 2
20 Sheffield United 1

Just for fun, I decided to take a peak at the table after matchweeks 8, 16, 24, and 32 last year, to get a feel for how fast the table can change. As expected, being only 8 weeks in made for some large jumps (Man United was 12th and finished at 3rd) and drops (Crystal Palace was 6th and finished 14th, Bournemouth was 10th and finished 18th). Things start to stabilize, particularly at the top, by wk 16, with the exception of Southampton who were 18th at the time and finished 11th. Liverpool was a model of consistency throughout.

2019-20 Table and Changes:
36224

To get a feel for how the final top 10 all bounced around in the table last year, below is a graph showing the place of each team after weeks 8, 16, 24, 32, and 38. It seems as if Manchester United is a likely candidate to see another large improvement post matchweek 8. Manchester City was pretty stable all last year, but they should be making a jump also. I look forward to seeing how Aston Villa and Southampton can perform the rest of the way.

Bumping because this thread came to kind after relegation got sewn up yesterday.

My god, we all whiffed on West Ham. I think @Zososoxfanhad them highest by predicting 11th place.

I'll never forgive myself for putting Arsenal ahead of LCFC. I won't underestimate the Foxes again.

This is awesome, thanks for putting together. We need to come up with a scoring system and see who did the best.

As a final stamp on the 2020-21 predictions, I tallied up the results for everyone and found the following.

Total Places Off:
A lower value is better here. It is the sum of the absolute value of the poster's pick minus the actual place for each club (i.e. a pick for a club to finish 5th and they finished 8th, would be 3 picks off, and a pick for a club to finish 10th and they finish 6th would be 4 picks off).
  1. Cellar-Door: 42
  2. Morgan's Magic Snowplow: 56
  3. The Realness: 58
  4. 67YAZ: 60
  5. Mighty Joe Young + Zosoxfan: 62
  6. OCST: 64
  7. coremiller: 66
  8. CPT Neuron: 68
  9. Tuff Ghost: 70 (oof!)
Most Exact Picks:
4 - Cellar-Door (City, Chelsea, Leicester City, Arsenal)

Worst Individual Picks (10 or more places off):
12 places off - Morgan's Magic Snowplow (West Ham, picked 18, finished 6)
11 places off - 67YAZ (West Ham, picked 17, finished 6)
11 places off - OCST (Sheffield United, picked 9, finished 20)
10 places off - CPT Neuron (West Ham, picked 16, finished 6)
10 places off - coremiller (Sheffield United, picked 10, finished 20)
10 places off - Mighty Joe Young (West Ham, picked 16, finished 6)
10 places off - OCST (West Ham, picked 16, finished 6)
10 places off - Zosoxfan (Sheffield United, picked 10, finished 20)

Curious if we'll see a Sheffield United (serious underachiever) and West Ham (serious overachiever) in our collection of picks this year.

Nice work by Cellar-Door!
