Seems like kind of an easy one to deflect unless you work with a bunch of Fins?
For real. Tell them to stick to harassing teenagers and booing superior hockey nations. Fuck man, ask them how Canada did in the relegation round and see if you can keep a straight face.

I think it was mostly a Vancouver thing (probably would have happened in Montreal too), but there were a lot of stupid Canadian hockey fans all tournament. I’m just bummed the US didn’t get a chance to beat them again.

Which relegation game was that?

I agree with the characterization of the way some Canadians were treating Comtois online. I think he played poorly for most of the tournament, but I sure as hell didn't hop online a Instagram him or anything. So try not to paint us all with the same brush. We don't all assume you're a bunch of racist assholes because of the actions of a few. Assume the asshole Canadians aren't on this board either

It's also amazing to me that a Red Sox forum with fans from all over the world still has members that will immediately post a "Fuck Canada" message or something similar as soon as they lose a hockey game. We're supposed to be a better board than most, so let's aim for that

As for your superior hockey nation quote, since the US won its first World Junior gold, Canada has won 7, to the US's 4. And we're about 1/10th your size.

I think part of the issue is that this thread is like a hybrid game thread, discussion thread. I'd rather see us just enjoy the game for what it is and leave it at that. Or create a specific game thread for the HnR posters.

And you can try to not be so sensitive to some lighthearted ribbing while understanding this is a US-centric board.
Or maybe I might take offense when some here keep posting ignorant things like "Fuck Canada" or "Canada still sucks" over and over and over. It sure stops feeling like "lighthearted ribbing"

This may be a US centric board, but the way long time posters have been leaving, it may also be time to do a better job and become more inclusive, rather than turning into the old boys club

As I said before, is this a game thread or a discussion thread?

citation please? Here are the posts I found immediately following the Canada loss:

Later Canada!
Whoa, Canada gone. WOW
Love that it was Comtois that got stuffed on the OT penalty shot too. He’s been diving and flopping all over the ice all tourney.
Apparently it is the first time Canada has failed to medal as the host country.
I thought he was terrible this tournament

Can't believe he was given a top 3 player for us

No offense for this team. 5 goals in the past 3 games.

DiPietro played really well all tournament
Yeah not sure if it was a case of him trying to do too much wearing the C, but I’m really not a fan of his game. I like the other two guys on his line a lot, Tippett in particular. Think he will be a great nhl’er.
Ya, Tippett looks like a really nice player
As much as it pains me to say it, Canada got pretty damn unlucky on both those goals...wow
That really was incredible bad luck. Off the guys shinpad to tie it, then Canada has what looked like a sure one timer OT goal and the guys stick breaks and Finland goes down the other end of the ice and ends it. Unreal.

And Jack Hughes... holy shit. I haven’t seen him play before this. What speed and skill. I understand the hype.

In this instance, it's both. We commonly have threads here that straddle the line when they're not about Bruins games (which go in the game thread forum). I haven't seen anything remotely inappropriate in this thread worthy of moderation or rebuke.

Here are the posts in this thread that aren't yours with "fuck" in them. Kindly point out the ones that have "Fuck Canada" as you quoted?

Fuck yeah!!!
(after the US tied the gold medal game)

Fuck the refs. Robbed

Yeah, I mean listen- I'm as pro Canada about just about everything...I'm likely going to end up there in a few years to raise my family. Great country, pretty easily the best hockey producing country ever (with the possible exception of Russia, but not really). If you knew me you'd know what this means to me- my son now joins the 4th generation of hockey players in my family, going back to my grandfather who played goal against Canadian teams in Vermont in the 1930s. I bleed the game (and have bled it repeatedly) and have nothing but the utmost respect for the history of the game and it's culture and values, and that all comes from Canada. All that said-

1) Some/Many Canadian fans are a little too intense about their hockey, eh? Whether it's trashing your city after winning or losing the Cup (or when a superstar is justifiably suspended), whether it's atom hockey patents in GTA, whether it's the incredible pressure placed upon a bunch of teenagers every holiday season, whatever. It's a bit much. The treatment of Comtois is not an isolated incident- shit like this happens all the time with hockey in Canada.

2) I get that the US and Canada have a really good hockey rivalry going the last 20 years, but the over the top and incessant booing of the US kids was a little strange and totally unnecessary. Frankly it was a little embarrassing.

3)The relegation game comment?

(granted it wasn't a great joke, but it was off the top of my not so bright head)

I think you're being a little sensitive here- it was all thrown around with the intention of some locker room banter. I mean, facts are that Canada didn't medal while hosting then tournament and some/many fans acted like idiots about it. Someone from the US throwing out a few barbs about it isn't the reason some people leave this board.

If you're actually offended by my post, then I apologize for upsetting you- wasn't my intent to wound, just tease. But it's probably not that that bothered you as much as the lack of a Cup since 1993.

This is probably stemming from these posts from the Olympics and it's just stuck with me and hit a nerve

Yes yes yes

USA USA USA

Fuck
Canada
Marci Sturm is a Bruins cult hero. He scored the GWG in the definitive game that made me a Bruins fan again. He also makes a fucked up face upon scoring. You’re goddamned right I’m thrilled he’s in the gold medal game. Sturm Face is something for a reason. And now I’m watching Game 6 highlights on dafoomie for the next however long.

As for hating on Canada, well, sucks to suck in your two best sports. Better luck in the Stanley Cup. Fuck Canada. Scott’s a dick.

Edit: Roman Hamrlik still has nightmares about getting worked over three times by Sturm in one shift. I’m very happy now. Thank you all you sensitive maple syrup salesmen.

This is likely the case, and wasn't your post in particular, just have my hackles up for some reason

And my father raised me to be a Canadiens fan...so at least that last Stanley Cup was from my team....25 years ago :)

Ya, that's fair and I didn't mean to come across as looking for some if it was taken that way

I normally don't wade to far into these threads, but I think I've made my point in the previous posts

It’s not really about hockey - many Canadians have a smug sense of superiority when it comes to relating to their neighbors to the south...and honestly as a dual-US/Canada citizen living in Canada it’s a little old and mildly offensive.

Canada celebrates its national tolerance and acceptance of “the other”. Except for when it comes to ONE country...

These days I kind of think they are entitled to that!

Has anyone written a recap of Bruin prospects in the WJC? From what I've seen, Vaakanainen was very good, but I'm wondering about the others.

Meh. Doesn’t bother me THAT much...

Funny thing is that when the US and Canada play in hockey, I root for the US, but when they play in baseball I root for Canada...
I just always wanted to say that.

I have always tended to defend americans with that kind of stuff. Been hard for around three years for some reason.
