Masvidal is alright. He had a tough life growing up in a rough neighborhood. He reminds me of half the kids I went to high school with.

Stipe is a good guy. Whittaker seems awesome.

Yeah that was a weird comment. Masvidal is basically saying talk shit, get hit. It’s not exactly Sermon on the Mount material, but if you’re a combat sport athlete, you view violence much differently.

Masvidal is extremely likeable. He's genuine and has little tolerance for WWE-style promoting and cheap theatrics. I appreciate it. Zomp is spot on, he's the product of a certain kind of environment.

It’s not like he said he hoped the guy died or got brain damage. It’s much less objectionable to me than athletes or legends talking about warfare or being in trenches or whatever. This is what fighting is.

There are no shortage of fighters who were the bully you knew in school.
I didn't really have a bully, thankfully. There was one dude who poked fun at me, but it was just some rich dipshit who played lacrosse. It never turned physical, or anything.

I feel like boxers are more grounded than MMA guys. Maybe I'm wrong. I dunno. Thoughts, @Marciano490? Are all combat sports participants dicks?

Honestly, most of the nicest guys I knew were fighters or powerlifters, because they had nothing to prove and didn't really try to intimidate or shit talk people. Of course, I mostly knew them in gyms and was "one of them," so I'm not really able to vouch how they'd act towards others on the outside.

Also, if we're equating favoring violence as being a dick, then yeah, a lot of them are dicks. However, I think violence can be a useful deterrent and teacher, and looking back on my life, I think emotional brutality stays with you longer than physical. Of course, others may think differently.

I mean there is also no shortage of decent guys. I feel like you’re painting with a very broad brush here.
That's fair - I very well might be.

Maybe it's a sympton of the sport being relatively "small." There're obviously a bunch of crappy football/basketball/baseball/hockey players out there - there're just way more of them.

What exactly makes these guys not likable? They talk a little shit?

It's not just talking shit. It's throwing water bottles at press conferences, it's hurling dollies at buses full of people, it's racist tattoos, it's nearly beating adult film stars to death...

I understand that talking shit is a major part of the buildup to a fight. That's been the case forever. I just feel like MMA fighters are in a whole different league when it comes to this stuff.

To the Kyles of the MMA world, everything looks like drywall.

Water bottles? Who the fuck is this guy?
You wanna laugh off the white supremacist and sexual assault stuff, too?

The Diaz/McGregor thing was just childish bullshit. I don't like it, but fine - that's me. What were your thoughts on the dolly-throwing incident? Is that acceptable behavior from the biggest athlete in the sport?

The sport itself is fucking fascinating. There's so much to it. I just can't stand a lot of the folks involved in it.

I agree with you that there are some legit assholes in MMA and that McGregor is one of them. However, I’m not sure the occurrence of assholes here is higher than in other sports or society in general.

I figured that could very well be the case. I also realize that I might feel this way because it's not a team sport - if someone is an asshole in MMA, you're going to know about it.

I'll knock off my pearl clutching. Sorry, fellas.

Not at all. I think it’s important to alway be mindful of some of the behavior you cite, otherwise it becomes normalized.

Also, you’re probably right that guy like Osuna and Chapman get passes because of rooting interests.

Well I hope you can't stand the NFL or NBA either with their rapists (Big ben, Kobe) and murders (Ray Lewis, James Harden)

In my experiences MM artists are some of the calmest nicest people I know, probably because of lack of insecurity.

Urijah Faber just dropped Ricky Simon in the first round and looked damn good. 40 going on 30. I don't see it lasting, but damn that was some throwback fun.

Watched Edwards-RDA last night. Very impressive technique out of Edwards. Elbows are really underutilized in general, and he had great timing and precision with his.

Plus his general britishness. Made a fan out of me.

Was that Hardy stoppage legit?
I thought so. A ton of unanswered strikes that didn't look very hard, but with heavyweights, how can you really know? I think if Adams would have tried to do something different he would have opened himself up to real power shots. Seems like he made a choice.

So, Darren Till is possibly moving up to middleweight because the cut at welterweight is really hard for him. Sounds reasonable. Then I read this article from his coach and I couldn't help but chuckle at little. How often do you see a coach talk so candidly to the media and call out their fighter?

https://www.bloodyelbow.com/2019/7/26/8931125/ufc-coach-explains-reason-behind-darren-tills-weight-issues-mma-news
”The obvious answer is, ‘He has a tough weight cut and needs to go up,’ correct?” Heron told ESPN in a recent interview. “What people don’t see is the lifestyle between fights. It’s hard for me to make correct decisions, until I see a fighter, especially Darren, walking around lean between fights.

”Here’s the problem with Darren Till, and it’s no secret: He eats sh-t. As disciplined as he is in the gym, between fights, he will eat the most amount of sh-t you’ve ever seen in your life.”
“The fact of the matter is he will probably be a middleweight, but whether it’s now or later, I don’t know,” he said. “My only concern is he goes up to middle(weight), and that will give him the license to eat more. Then we end up with just as big of a cut, but with bigger consequences in the actual fight.

“So, I would like to get him lean and then make a decision.”
Interesting motivational tactic. Legit concerns. I sort of doubt that Till eats that badly, but obviously his coach wants him to make some changes. No surprise that for some guys, fighting the scale can be tougher than the fight in the ring/octagon. Makes these (mostly) tremendously fit athletes seem more human.

So, the UFC is done with Cyborg. Or as Dana said: "We're out of the Cyborg business'

https://mmajunkie.usatoday.com/2019/08/dana-white-says-ufc-is-done-with-cris-cyborg-were-out-of-the-cyborg-business?utm_source=smg&utm_medium=wasabi&utm_content=home-hero
I'm not surprised. Dana keeps saying that she doesn't want to fight Nunes again. She denies that. I'm guessing she doesn't want to fight Nunes on Dana's terms, which are probably for a good payday, but the equivalent of a one fight contract. I'm thinking she wants a chance to make more money with multiple fights and Dana doesn't want to pay her a bunch for fights in an underdeveloped division.

Maybe she blinks and does the Nunes fight and then walks.

Otherwise she's likely off to Bellator to fight Julia Budd.

I think Cyborg releasing the doctored video of Dana was the final straw for the company. The hypocrisy is a bit shameful, seeing how White regularly lies about fighters, but I don’t see how else Cyborg and her camp thought this was going to work out after releasing that video. Saying the UFC won’t match any offers seems specifically designed to lower her price to Bellator and other companies. You don’t usually see the UFC completely chose spite over business like this.

It is a shame that the UFC never really seemed to capitalize on such a great fighter correctly and that contract negotiations went so far sideways so fast at the end. I’d prefer to see the best fighting in the top promotion.

I don't know how, but I totally missed that the video was doctored. I love the UFC, but man, so much WWE nonsense with the drama.

For those of us who don’t religiously follow MMA drama, what doctored video?

Made Robbie look like Dan Henderson there. Him and Usman have to fight.

500 strikes and 20 takedown attempts landing a bunch of them. That’s not normal.

Usman is a tough style match for Colby but I will never doubt this kid. His lack of pop might be his undoing but he has amazing will to be able to use that pace.

I haven't been following it that closely but from what Ive read Dana wants to do a 1 fight deal, and Cyborg wants a 3-4 fight deal. People think they won't let Cyborg walk if she beats Nunes -- so if she wins she'd have leverage for another contract.

Not to be a hater but I was more disappointment in Robbie than Impressed by Colby. Seemed like Robbie just wanted to make it an endurance race and didn't start fighting til the last half of the fifth.

I think Robbie would have been happy to knock Colby out at any time. I don’t think he had some grand strategy. He could not handle the pace. When he was trying to get set Colby was moving him, pitter patting him, or taking him down. What Colby was doing is exhausting (to himself and his opponent).

Remember when we were talking about how weird Cejudo is? Add calling out Shevchenko to the list:

https://mmajunkie.usatoday.com/2019/08/henry-cejudo-intergender-fight-valentina-shevchenko-fellow-ufc-champ?utm_source=smg&utm_medium=wasabi&utm_content=home-hero
“So I’m out here enjoying my beautiful Sunday in beautiful Las Vegas, but my phone just keeps blowing up,” Cejudo said in a video he posted to social media. “That somebody by the name of Valentina ‘Bullet’ Shevchenko is the most dominant champion in the world. And guess what? I get a little jelly, because you know what? She has gold, and I want that gold. Valentina Shevchenko, I have a message for you: I’m looking to become the first intergender world champion that this world has ever seen. I’m calling you out. You can be the next to bend the knee to ‘Triple C.'”
I guess he's playing at a parody of a WWE heel? The awkward strangeness of this guy is piling up.

Edit: Heel probably isn't the right way to look at it. Maybe more like he's just running with the cringe thing x 100 to keep his name out there.

The Shevchenko fight was boring as shit and you didn't miss anything. I think Luque vs Perry is worth looking up. I've liked Luque for a while, and he was very good, but Perry was impressive too. Surprised me a little. It was fight of the night from this last show.

Yikes -- Captain Cringe is right.

Any of the recent fights worth searching for? I assume Valentina threw another shut out
You may want to skip the Perry fight if you get queasy seeing body parts in the wrong place. But since you’re a UFC fan, I assume you can’t wait to see what I’m talking about.

Agree with EE. Shevchenko fight put me to sleep. T be fair, I was really tired.

Still better than McGregor calling himself a billionaire and Mandingo champion, but really odd. It’s a shame; apparently two division UFC champs, outside DC are the new diva wide receivers?

125 is more like half a division. He's a 1.5 champ.

It wouldn't surprise me if the Shevchenko fight was boring the same way some of Jon Jones fights are boring. She'd my top p4p women.

Not even close on being similar to a Jones fight. They combined to land 60 significant strikes in a 5 round 50-45 on all cards fight. Carmouche landed 18 significant strikes. They were each looking to counter and no one initiated action. There were points in the fight where it looked like Carmouche was shadow boxing with her punches a good 3 feet away from connecting. Neither adapted at all as the fight went on and rounds 4 and 5 were more maddening for the fact that Carmouche was well behind and did nothing to change the pace of the fight. Horrible main event after an fun co-main where Perry's nose was re-positioned by a great knee from Luque.
