Robbie couldn't have handled this any better. His conference after the fight was great.

Some drunk dude is explaining the rules after the fight and is just making it more complicated.

Yeah he is. I like him. I was looking earlier today, and not too surprisingly, he’s only been KO’d once earlier in his career. And only a couple of finishes. I still think Till is overrated tho.

You might like this throwback

Fucking Leon didn’t realize Jorge is in fact about that life.

He should have watched that video I posted.

Seems like Till was very tentative once Masvidal hit that takedown and almost took his back. Almost like he was having trouble defending multiple threats.

Usman v. Gamebread is 10,000 times more interesting than Usman mugging that idiot Colby Covington for five rounds. Let Askren end Covington and give us Marty v. Masvidal.

That wiki update is awesome. And yeah, Masvidal does seem old school. Maybe like a Diaz brother, but with less artifice.

Colby and Masvidal are pretty close. Wonder if this is going to strain their relationship

Dillashaw just gave up his belt pending a suspension.

http://www.espn.com/mma/story/_/id/26313639/dillashaw-gives-belt-suspended-nysac

Dillashaw (16-4) announced Wednesday morning that he has "voluntarily relinquished" the UFC's 135-pound title after he was informed by the New York State Athletic Commission and the United States Anti-Doping Agency of an "adverse finding in a test taken for my last fight." ESPN confirmed the validity of the statement via multiple sources.
Apparently he'll be out a year from his last fight with Cejudo. No word on the substance. I'm wondering if he took something to help with that horrendous weight cut.

I’m a bit confused at this Wonderboy Pettis fight coming up Saturday. I think this is really dangerous for Pettis.

That Arkansas redneck Bryce Mitchell is fun to watch. I enjoyed his time on TUF. Wants Nike to make him some camo shorts. Heh. That was funny.

Looking ahead to later in the card, I think I agree that Pettis is going to get killed by Wonderboy. Not sure what he is doing. Wonderboy can't be a big money fight for him, can it? Maybe the UFC made him an offer he couldn't refuse, but otherwise, I'd think he'd test 170 with a lesser name first.

I think Duke Rufus feels like after seeing him with Woodley twice, he can gameplan for Wonderboy.

Not sure if I agree with it, as their is a huge difference between what Woodley and Pettis can bring, but their camp must be feeling good.

Pettis extremely lucky to land that shot. He earned the win. I still think this was matchmaking malpractice because he was getting tuned up coming off a fight where he took a beating.

170 as a division is looking so bad right now.

That was awesome from Pettis. Damn, he was lucky. I like Wonderboy a little bit more too. Seems like a good guy.

Nice to see a fight without a bunch of cheap theatrics between two professionals.

Pettis is the Adam Dunn of MMA. There is definitely a game plan to consistently get him out that we have seen from Max, Alvarez, Tony Furgeson, RDA etc. But man, he has some epic home runs in knocking out Cowboy or Wonderboy and submitting Cowboy Olivera, Gil Melendez and Bendo. Such a great boom or bust fighter. His fights are never boring and when he wins it is always awesome.

I don’t follow mma closely, but what was Thompson doing with his hands at his waist? That’s crazy.

Honestly I just don't think he was expecting it. He doesn't remember getting hit according to his Instagram video.

That was about as close to a Hail Mary as you'll get in MMA. Pettis was being dominated and I think Wonderboy just got over confident.

We don't have a college wrestling thread on here, so I'll put this here. Bo Nickal challenged Ben Askren to a wrestling match. It looks like those two are going to wrestle.

It looked like he was just resetting and dropped his arms to shake them out, rather than holding them there consistently. He was more or less out of range and Pettis jumped.

A combination of being tired and keeping the balance with the side-kick, IMHO. When you’re not fresh, you compensate for the loss of balance with exaggerated body-lean in the opposite direction and letting your hands go out and down. That’s usually not fatal if the kick creates distance and you snap your hands back up after, but it’s definitely a vulnerable second that people try to exploit with their hands.

Edit: Eh, just rewatched it. He was just lazy with his hands down (part of it was him disguising the lead hand by keeping it low) and got surprised that Pettis had the range.

So, Conor retired, but is also apparently under investigation in Ireland for a sexual assault for which he was arrested in January.

How can you not just love Michelle Waterson? She seems to be getting better every fight, she's a good sport with great spirit, and she's cute as a button.

I like Waterson a lot, but I still think she’s a tier below the top fighters in the division. Thug Rose and Joanna still beat her easily. But I do hope she continues to improve. Her instragram is great too. Just a great role model.

Gaethje is so fun to watch. I can't see how his career is going to last super long given his fighting style, but I'll enjoy it as long as it lasts.

I mean, I see stuff like that and I gotta reiterate these guys are mid level amateur boxers at best still.

Sure. And many are mid-level wrestlers, mid-level BJJ martial artists, mid-level kickboxers, etc, etc, too.

Harder to be an elite specialist when there are so many skills that have to be covered at some level, no?

Oh for sure. It’s just funny to me, or maybe telling, there hasn’t been an elite striker to transition. Some of these guys are elite wrestlers or bjj dudes, but I can’t think of someone with elite boxing or Muay Thai who has come over and dominated. Maybe Cung Le?

Beyond all the BJJ and wrestling, just considering the striking element in MMA, I think an elite boxer would still need more than superb hands to be a good MMA striker. Knees, elbows, feet...how hard of an adjustment would that be for an elite boxer just in the striking realm, both offensively and defensively?

After reading some of the stuff you've posted, Marciano, I picture it taking thousands and thousands of hours to learn the nuances of boxing well enough to be elite. Honestly asking, how much muscle memory do you think you would need to change just to defend against a wider variety of strikes and ranges? I can't really picture how hard that would be.

Machida was an elite striker first, and his sense of stance and range stymied a lot of his opponents’ offense. Silva was striking dominant too, to a lesser extent.

Both are Brazilian and had probably more access to interdisciplinary fighting at a younger age than most Americans of that generation.

Takedowns are hard to defend if you're not used to them.

You're a trained boxer, would you use the same boxing defense if the other guy could use kicks? Would you even know how to properly defend against them?

Oh a ton. Like a shitload. I remember getting in a bar fight and some dude threw a kick at my head. Didn’t even see it coming. He was out of range and just missed, but I imagine I’d basically have to start from scratch to learn to defend kicks and takedowns. I’d probably hold my hands differently and my stance would likely change and where I looked at my opponent, angles, etc.

However; that doesn’t seem any different than the ncaa wrestlers or the bjj guys. I guess my question is whether the striking is less important, easier to pick up, or it’s just flukish that most guys have the grappling background and not the striking background.

Just to follow up on that thread of thought. I think martial artists like wrestlers and BJJ practitioners have another advantage over boxers because I think more of their experience immediately translates to MMA with fewer adjustments than boxing. They can focus more effort outside of their base on learning new skills. Seems like an elite boxer would have to learn more adjustments from their boxing base plus the skills from new martial arts.

Just speculating of course.

Edit: was typing this when you posted, but I think it mostly applies to your question. Overall just more stuff to learn and adjust for boxers, I'd guess. MMA does see fighters with golden gloves pedigrees, so maybe that is a natural point to crossover. GG fighters not good enough to be elite boxers, but youngish enough to learn additional skills?

I realize my comments kind of come off like “lol these guys suck”. I don’t mean that at all. I get it’s impossible to be a master of all trades. I trained boxing 3-4 hours a day, and the human body just isn’t capable of doing that for 3-4 disciplines every day without breaking down.

I guess I look at it more like Moneyball stuff. If the majority of these fighters are mid level strikers, it seems Iike there’d be an opening for a high level guy or woman to come in and just wreck shit so long as their take down defense and grappling was adequate.
