Porcello is a FA after this season. Salaries shouldn't matter much if comparing the two.
So is Pomeranz. If you're the acquiring team, salary makes a difference in what you're willing to give up. Unless you're suggesting the Sox eat salary to get a slightly better lottery ticket prospect. What's the gain in that?

It's notable that the MFY, who arguably have a far worse starting pitching situation than the Sox (though a better pen), also stood pat.

That he's a FA makes him less valuable. There's about 33% of the season left. So that's about 6.7M for Porcello and 500k for Pomeranz. It's not my money, but I think it might matter to those whose money it is.

If you start from the premise that you are punting on this season, then you'd be paying Porcello anyways while missing the playoffs. It's dead money. If you have to eat some of Porcello's salary to get a better return in talent, so be it. That is the whole point of being a seller.

Updated final (?) Wild Card race acquisitions.

TB - Aguilar, Richards, Anderson, Sogard
OAK - Roark, Diekman, Bailey
CLE - Puig, Reyes, Nova, Cardenas
MIN - Romo
BOS - Cashner

Tampa and Cleveland got a whole lot better, I think. Nick Anderson could honestly be as good as Diaz if things break right. Absurd whiff rate.
Cleveland also traded a very good #2 starter to get some of that

TB scares me. They are really really good and only continue to get better
They were my dark horse favorites to win the division this year but it seems that old habits die hard down there and they've refused to live up to their potential over the last 6 weeks or so.

Right now it's probably a coin flip between them and Boston finishing second, but I'm not sure that will be good enough to get a playoff spot anyway. Then again, they actually did something to improve their team today and made a late charge last season, so we'll see.

There's the problem. They're not punting.

Yes. If they are punting a season when they are 2 games out of the playoffs that they'll be missing, then yes, they should sell Porcello. But they better sell X and Devers, too, and maybe ERod and Workman, because if they keep them, the plan might be foiled by actually making the playoffs. Then what?

TB has actually underperformed their pythag so there is some room for it to even out.

If they play to their pythag they are a 92 or 93 win team.

I feel better about the Sox standing pat after the Greinke news. They aren’t getting out of the AL now anyways. No need to mortgage the future for an ALDS ass kicking,

Poor Zack, having one of the best pitcher hitting seasons in modern baseball history. At least he'll probably get to hit in the world series now.

How the hell did the Astros get Greinke? Doesn’t he have like a 35 million dollar/year contract? Unless he’s a two-month rental.

If the Sox went 2-5 last week instead of 5-2, I would hope that they would have sold. But if all they'd have gotten would be lottery tickets, is that really worth more than the 1%-ish change of winning this year? I doubt it.

It means Cole will be wearing pin stripes or Dodger Blue next season.

So, they are going with the 2018 postseason bullpen approach IF they make it in. It worked last year, which seems to have been the organization's approach for this year. Now, we strap in and see how this plays out.

As to the first 2 sentences, Who knows? On September 30th 2018, strapping Joe Kelly to a burning barge seemed to be the humane way to go. The third is really all there is.

I am actually quite relieved that the Sox didn't make any moves. Play out their hand and see where things go from there.

Dombrowski: "You cannot believe the number of clubs that called us about our bullpen guys."

Really Dave? Give me a break with this. No one that is intelligent is believing what you're currently saying.
You don't think every contending team would have been interested in Workman or Barnes if they thought the Sox might be sellers?
