I definitely expect/ed Dombrowski to make a move, but I'll be more shocked if and when the deadline passes without NYY acquiring a starter. Does Cashman really think he can drag that rotation through Houston?

standing pat is not a waste, they need as much cost-controlled talent as they can get for the early 2020s... a fringe arm that compromises that barely moves the needle....

Perhaps DD has finally come to the realization that he sucks at trading for relievers and best to stay pat instead of making Abad move.
last 3 years he's traded for Ziegler, Reed, and Eovaldi (not a reliever, but we know how that worked in playoffs), all of those worked out

there's plenty of sense to standing pat. it's likely this year has already been shot, but they could still win out a WC spot and then anything can happen.

there's not that much pressure to win it all this year. people will get over going from champs to out of playoffs if that's what happens.
This is where I've been all at season. I'd actually sale this year if I were DD to stock up for next season.

So giving up a couple of 20-30th ranked prospects in the system would compromise what exactly? Come on.
What are we getting for these 20-30 ranked prospects from the worst farm system in baseball? Pomeranz just got traded for a legit prospect.

And at the deadline, the big deals finally fall:
Joe Biagini to the Astros, and Max Stassi to the Angels.

Then sell Porcello at least for something...a couple lottery ticket prospects at least...

the single 7/31 deadline looks like a massive fail for MLB with so many teams unclear where they stand and unwilling to sell yet

This team, as currently constructed, is capable of winning it all.

Since their incomprehensible start they have been really good.
6-13 was their low-water mark. Since then they've gone 53-36 (.596), which projects to 96 wins. So yeah, I guess you call that "really good". If they play .596 ball over their last 54, they'll end up with 85 wins, which won't nearly be enough. They need to get to about 93 wins, is my guess. So they need to go 34-20 (.630) the rest of the way to get to 93.

@Feinsand

With 10 minutes to go until the Trade Deadline, it appears that, barring any last-minute prices coming down, the Red Sox will not make any bullpen moves. Didn't see that one coming.

And there's the key phrase.

Stupid GMs set the market value too high for middling relievers for the Red Sox to be able to afford it with their shit-ass farm system.

Out of curiosity, when's the last time they stood pat at the deadline and did anything of note in the postseason?

I expect the trade deadline date to change as soon as next year. MLB is finally getting the parity it wants, so it needs to adjust the deadline accordingly.

What a kick in the crotch of a day. Fucking standing pat. Standing pat is for losers.

It's definitely a fail in terms of the deadline being an exciting event. But I wonder if there's some labor reason the league would prefer to suppress trading.

They were talking to the Jays about Daniel Hudson. Hudson went to the Nats for their 27th rated prospect who is a 24 year old A ball pitcher.
Jays aren't trading inside the division or at least not at FMV. Rumor was they wanted two elite prospects from NYY for Stroman much higher package than what they got from NYM.

They have 54 games to make up 2 games. It's pretty fucking doable.

And really, what's the harm in pushing it back to Aug 15 - kind of a middle ground between July 31 non-waiver deadline and Aug 31 waiver deadline? Still means six weeks without making a trade, gives teams a little longer to sort through their situation.

Nats' 27th ranked prospect =/= the Red Sox' 20-30th ranked prospect.

Unless the Sox farm system got a significant upgrade no one was aware of.

If there is any sense that this year is shot, then the team should be looking to sell. If they feel they can contend, then buy. Middle ground is a total waste of assets.
Yes. Because nothing says "sound management" like "lets torpedo our good but unexpectedly not-great year by guaranteeing mediocrity for the next few after that."

They'll end up with 91. You forgot to add those first 6 wins.

If it nudges the team over the cap, it compromises plenty (starting with the draft pick)
Right — so DD needed to add a pitcher 1) better than Darwinzon, 2) with a low enough salary to not hit the cap, and 3) without hurting the farm too much. It's a tough ask. I still thought he'd pull it off, likely by trading Dalbec.

And this year, he traded for Cashner. If Eovaldi counts as a reliever because of his work there in the playoffs, then Cashner ought to qualify as well. Either he's in the playoff pen or he pushes one of the other starters there.

In a trade market where Pomeranz returns something with value, how does flipping a Porcello for some lottery ticket guarantee mediocrity for the next few years? Quite the opposite.

People pointing to the Pom trade... Brewers did an all-time dumb there. maybe most desperate for pitching. but did they match up with us well? probably not.

By "being a seller" you mean "trade the pitcher who sucks most right now."? That's not "being a seller," IMO. And you wouldn't even get a lottery ticket for Porcello. Sox best bet is to count on him to stop sucking for *them* so they can get to the playoffs.

DD has a track record of being quite candid with the media regarding his thinking. He said several days back that the Sox might be done with making acquisitions.

Updated final (?) Wild Card race acquisitions.

TB - Aguilar, Richards, Anderson, Sogard
OAK - Roark, Diekman, Bailey
CLE - Puig, Reyes, Nova, Cardenas
MIN - Romo
BOS - Cashner

Tampa and Cleveland got a whole lot better, I think. Nick Anderson could honestly be as good as Diaz if things break right. Absurd whiff rate.

Against the sentiment of the board, I am pretty happy. I wish the market for relief had been for buyers but apparently it wasn’t.

They pulled off a coup last year dealing with Panda, Castillo, Allen Craig, and Pedroia, but all those issues are still there except Craig and the cost of Mookie, Xander, Sale and Eovaldi all went up.

Standing pat today was a mini version of the Nick Punto day. What they could have stretched to afford was not going to be the difference in winning the World Series. Either they are going to click or they aren’t and to blow the cap or trade a cost controlled asset for what likely would have amounted to maybe .1 division series level wins was not the smart move. Sometimes the smart move is to say no.
