Would love to see your analysisI hope they improve the bullpen, but as constructed, even though it’s almost the same as last year, this is a 1 and done in a WC game.

Always liked Hudson. Saw him pitch in high school and college down here.Nationals get Daniel Hudson.
True, and it's a credit to this lineup (in spite of the squanders) to make it possible for bad starts to turn into possible bullpen losses. In a WC/post season game, Price is pulled earlier and the BP usage is totally different thanks to a new face or two (with arms) being added in the next 1:48.True. But few teams in baseball have a bullpen that can be asked to get 15+ outs (as they needed last night) and expect that they'll be able to do it without giving up anything, let alone a slim lead. Asking any bullpen to get 15+ outs is putting yourself in a difficult position to win. So I'm still going to blame the starter more than the relievers in a game like last night's.
Edit to add: in a winner-take-all single game like the WC, most managers are going to approach it with an all hands on deck philosophy. So if something like last night were to occur, it's as likely that we'd see another starter (say E-Rod if Price starts) cover the middle innings if the starter can't get through at least five. Basically, I think a short or weak bullpen can be masked for one game if the entire pitching staff is in play as it would be in the WC game.
So, after seeing what the Brewers gave up for 2 middling arms, maybe there's a reason the Sox are balking.McAdam is saying the Sox think the price is too high. We don't know whether "too high" in the Sox opinion is Casas, or something that would be considered much less.
My thought is that this team is way too inconsistent. Even in a 1 and done, if the starter goes six, we’re still sweating out the final nine outs. That inconsistency is rough.Would love to see your analysis
I said in the MLB deadline thread that I think Dubon should be seen as roughly comparable in value to Michael Chavis. More glove, less pop.So, after seeing what the Brewers gave up for 2 middling arms, maybe there's a reason the Sox are balking.
Yeah, but we have the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse leading our lineup. My thought is that this team is way too inconsistent. Even in a 1 and done, if the starter goes six, we’re still sweating out the final nine outs. That inconsistency is rough.

I think you mean:
Things change once the playoffs start...Cora showed last season that he is not opposed to having starters come out of the bullpen. In fact, some of last season's best postseason bullpen appearances came from guys who were in the starting rotation all season long. I have great faith this team can survive a one-and-done WC game.My thought is that this team is way too inconsistent. Even in a 1 and done, if the starter goes six, we’re still sweating out the final nine outs. That inconsistency is rough.
I realize that data is not the plural of anecdote, but may I give a subjective opinion of Diaz’s last year in Seattle, as seen from the seats of the ballpark formerly known as Safeco Field?Belief now (not guaranteed) is Mets hold onto Edwin Diaz. He might need to rebuild value first.

Kimbrel-esqueDiaz was not close to as good as the absolute Saves number would lead you to believe. He’d come in with a 2-run lead in the top of the 9th to flashing LED lights and scary music, then he’d walk the first two guys on 9 pitches, get a loud out, give up a single to plate a run, then strike out a guy on a 3-2 pitch after 5 foul balls, and then get an out on a ball in play to notch the save.
Maybe if it had any connection with reality, but back in this time-space continuum, Diaz gave up runs in only 12 games all season and only 3 of those did he get saves in. The other 54 saves were scoreless.Kimbrel-esque
I know you are just giving an impression, but his WHIP last year was 0.79, his pitches-per-inning was almost exactly 16, and he only gave up an earned run or more in 11 games, so the scenario you describe couldn't have happened in more than a very small percentage of his appearances.Diaz was not close to as good as the absolute Saves number would lead you to believe. He traded for Cashner already. It's criminal if DD does nothing to address their pitching. It's like he's giving up on them.
There are SO many buyers right now that I think the sellers are overplaying their hands. Either that, or a LOT of deals are going to be announced at 4pmIt's criminal if DD does nothing to address their pitching. It's like he's giving up on them.
In addition to that obviously. He traded for Cashner already.
If he had waited until today, would that really make a difference? Because I guess at least then we could say he made a deadline move.In addition to that obviously.
EXACTLY. How many trades has DD made in his time here right at the deadline? He makes his moves early. I don't think he's going to scramble and make a last minute over-pay just to say he did something. If the right deal isn't there, it isn't there. He traded for Cashner already.
Then again, those first 2 starts by Cashner sucked--I wish he had waited til today to get him.EXACTLY. How many trades has DD made in his time here right at the deadline? He makes his moves early. I don't think he's going to scramble and make a last minute over-pay just to say he did something. If the right deal isn't there, it isn't there.
Was coming to post the same thing. (nvalvo beat me to it, handily). I know it's an almost impossible concept to get your arms around, but maybe the Mets aren't so dumb after all?In light of some of the subsequent trades, it really seems like the Stroman deal was a steal for the Mets.
It's almost like NOT waiting til the deadline brings better deals. Was coming to post the same thing. (nvalvo beat me to it, handily). I know it's an almost impossible concept to get your arms around, but maybe the Mets aren't so dumb after all?
The trade deadline just isn't what is used to be
I guess we're not getting Rich Harden after all.Sean McAdam

With 13 minutes to go before the deadline, exec with another team describes Red Sox as "all quiet'' on trade front.

Ridiculous.
Amazing...all that smoke. Literally anyone they can trade for will be an upgrade over the majority of this pen. How can DD feel comfortable putting half these guys in any situation let alone a playoff game? Or you could go the other way and sell but that was never going to happen. Even if they got swept by NY and Tampa.Sean McAdam

You do add Cashner and perhaps Porcello to the playoff bullpen.Amazing...all that smoke. Literally anyone they can trade for will be an upgrade over the majority of this pen. How can DD feel comfortable putting half these guys in any situation let alone a playoff game?
For almost every "top" team. Dodgers, Yankees, Astros, Red Sox all taking their ball and going home. 9 minutes to go10 minutes until blue balled disappointment
It's probably not DDski failing to pull the trigger, but rather John Henry not letting him.Amazing...all that smoke. I have it on very good authority this was definitely happening until Price spit the bit last night.Still 10 minutes for my Price for Buehler dream to come through.
$210 to Jimmy Fund if this happens.
Sure, but that's only half the equation - a reliever has to be available at a reasonable price. A mindset of "we have to get at least one reliever, no matter the cost" is precisely how bad trades that look terrible a year down the road happen.Literally anyone they can trade for will be an upgrade over the majority of this pen.
Abad is dealing for the Giants' AAA affiliate FWIW.Perhaps DD has finally come to the realization that he sucks at trading for relievers and best to stay pat instead of making Abad move.
If there is any sense that this year is shot, then the team should be looking to sell. If they feel they can contend, then buy. Middle ground is a total waste of assets.there's plenty of sense to standing pat. it's likely this year has already been shot, but they could still win out a WC spot and then anything can happen.
Has your money ever been so safely in your wallet? All snug and safe.Still 10 minutes for my Price for Buehler dream to come through.
