I've said this before and it will almost certainly always be true for the rest of NFL history: One thing that is completely indisputable, and objectively true (not subjective to whatever pet argument anyone wants to make), is that Tom Brady is the greatest *winner* in the history of the NFL. Period. Nobody else is even in the conversation. Not Montana. Not Unitas. Not Baugh. Not Bradshaw. Not Elway. Not Peyton. Not Rodgers. Nobody. The only one you could even mention would be Otto Graham, and that's based on a handful of years of work. He doesn't have anything close to the volume that Brady does. Nobody else is even in the discussion at all.
What I don’t get is how people discount winning entirely when having these discussions. At least when it comes to QB’s. Yes it’s a team sport and there are 53 guys on the roster, but the QB is part of that team and one of those 53. He’s one of the most important guys if not the most important.

Nobody actually makes the “Just look at the rings” argument people like to mock. They use the rings to supplement the overall argument which is fair. Postseason success shouldn’t be the only factor to consider but it should definitely be one of them, especially when you’re trying to decide who’s at the top of the mountain for all time greatness. No one would take Trent Dilfer over Dan Marino.

Tom Brady being the GOAT isn’t just pointing at the six trophies, it’s the other accomplishments where he matches up well with the competition and then pointing out the postseason where he just smokes said competition and leaves them completely in the dust. It’s also not like he’s gotten “carried” to any of his titles either. Every single one has required him to make big plays to secure the championship.

In every single one of his Super Bowls, Brady either had a game-winning drive in the fourth quarter or overtime, or had his team in the lead in the fourth quarter.

SB 36: GW drive in the last minute and a half, culminating in a GW field goal with no time left
SB 38: GW drive in the last minute, culminating in a GW field goal with just a couple of seconds left
SB 39: GW drive early in the fourth quarter, as the game was tied at that point; then drove to secure the win later in the 4th quarter
SB 42: Took the lead with two and a half minutes to go on a TD pass to Moss
SB 46: Had the lead with just a few minutes left before the Giants drove to take the lead with a minute to go
SB 49: GW drive late in the fourth quarter, came back from 10 points down to take the lead with two minutes left
SB 51: Game tying drive late in the fourth quarter, came back from a 25 point deficit; GW drive in OT
SB 52: Came back from a 12 point deficit to take the lead with a little over 9 minutes left in the game
SB 53: Game tied in the fourth quarter, led a GW TD drive in the fourth quarter, then sealed it with a FG drive late to end it

A poll of NFL fans taken by a peer to peer ride sharing company Turo, about tailgating had this result about Brady:

Poll shows Tom Brady is player fans most want to tailgate with

NFL celebrity guest
It’s every fan’s ultimate dream to add their favorite star player to the tailgate guest list. So who has the most powerful cult of personality in the NFL? With a whopping 42%, Tom Bradywins that contest easily, but any of these players would be sure to bring a high level of merriment to any tailgate:

  • Tom Brady (42%)
  • Aaron Rodgers (19%)
  • Rob “Gronk” Gronkowski (18.7%)
  • Antonio Brown (13.9%)
  • Baker Mayfield (6.4%)
The next best NFL guest
While 38.4% of men and 43.9% of women would love to have Tom Brady attend their tailgate, in the absence of the ultimate GOAT, men and women have slightly different ideas about who they’d invite next.

Women’s selections:

  • Tom Brady (43.9%)
  • Aaron Rodgers (18.8%)
  • Antonio Brown (16.1%)
  • Rob “Gronk” Gronkowski (15.7%)
  • Baker Mayfield (5.5%)
Men’s selection:

  • Tom Brady (38.4%)
  • Rob “Gronk” Gronkowski (24.3%)
  • Aaron Rodgers (19.4%)
  • Antonio Brown (9.8%)
  • Baker Mayfield (8.1%)

Aaron Rodgers can't even chug a beer and has a burgeoning reputation for being a lousy teammate. Brown is by all accounts, a huge asshole and would be maybe the last person I would invite to a tailgate, except for Tyreek Hill or Richie Incognito. Baker would probably be pretty fun. I'd throw in Von Miller and JJ Watt as solid hangs too.

There’s a bit insignificant chance Rodgers might also start a fight. Will there be party games or no?

Given that the percentages add up exactly to 100%, I'd wager the pool was given the choice of those five guys.

I for one would love to see Brady return punts. A blurb on nesn.com:

Gronkowski’s ongoing media tour included an appearance on Ian Rapoport’s podcast, and the NFL Media insider asked Gronkowski for some stories about Brady. Fittingly, the story Gronkowski chose to tell put Brady’s love for football on full display. “One time we were in camp, and he stayed in for the special teams meeting,” Gronkowski recalled. “He’s on no special teams or anything, and he’s taking notes, and I’m like ‘Man, this guy just loves football so much’ and you gotta respect that, and that’s an awesome feeling.

I'm a little bit nervous about the running game, which was a major major strength at the end of last season and into the playoffs. I expect James White to be his normal self, and huge improvements from Sony in the passing game, but a big part of the running game last year was fantastic blocking, and I can't help but think the loss of Gronk, Brown and Andrews will quietly be felt more in the running game than the passing game.

Tom Brady just put up this line as a 42-year old:

24-36 (66.7%), 341 yds, 9.5 y/a, 3 td, 0 int, 124.9 rating

Not that the list is long, but that's by far the best performance by an NFL quarterback at 42 yrs old or older in the history of the league. Other candidates:

Warren Moon (11/22/98 - 42 yrs, 4 days): 15-28 (53.6%), 201 yds, 7.2 y/a, 2 td, 1 int, 85.6 rating
Doug Flutie (1/2/05 - 42 yrs, 71 days): 13-22 (59.1%), 199 yds, 9.1 y/a, 1 td, 0 int, 104.2 rating
Vinny Testaverde (10/14/07 - 43 yrs, 335 days): 20-33 (60.6%), 206 yds, 6.2 y/a, 1 td, 0 int, 88.7 rating

I have a sneaking suspicion that this won't be his best game of the year. It really is amazing how good he still is at this age.

QB stats from the past 10 years aren't really comparable with prior to that.

Still quite impressive
It's comparable enough. Come on, give Brady his due. He is 42 years old and he put up a fantastic game. Not quite a perfect game, but it was stellar. The fact that nobody is even close at that age in the history of the NFL is remarkable. His career is unlike anyone in the history of the QB position.

Whatever, he blows. Did you see the duck he threw in the 1st quarter? I mean, both Lamar Jackson and Dak Prescott had a perfect QB rating yesterday.

Brady has a long way to go before he proves he hasn't fallen off that cliff. LAMAR JACKSON!!!

Remember, if Brady ain't perfect, he's done.

In all seriousness, I'm so glad Brady got off to the start he did yesterday, because If I had to hear the bullshit that went on last year early in the season about him being finished, I was going to lose my fucking mind. God help the first poster around here who started shitting on him after a couple average games, like we were hearing at the beginning of last season. Or the season before that. Or the one before that. Or the one before that, or the one before that, or the one before that, or the one before that...(I can't figure it out, did I get back to 2011 yet?).

The New England Patriots unveiled their sixth Super Bowl championship banner Sunday night, and then the 42-year-old Brady did what Brady always does in a 33-3 beatdown of the Pittsburgh Steelers. He threw for three touchdowns and 341 interception-free yards. He threw the long ball with the eagerness of a man half his age. He beat a defense that included Pittsburgh's first-round pick, Devin Bush, a lifetime after beating a Cleveland defense that included Bush's father during New England's first title season in 2001.

Is this the first father-son duo that Brady has beaten?

I think it depends on whether you count the Rams I think had Austin Proehl on their team (maybe only practice squad at the time of super bowl) when Brady beat them. So that's both Ricky and Austin as another father son combo.

But I wonder if this is a defense thing as both the Proehl's were wide receivers.

Posted in the week three thread, but Tom Brady has to be the clear frontrunner for the First Team 2010-2019 All Decade Team. Drew Brees is out, and Rodgers is really the only other competition in the field.

Tom Brady was First Team 2000-2009 All Decade Team. Out of all of his accomplishments, this would be incredible.

Here's a brief look at what everyone who would even be remotely in the conversation have done. Arguably I should have included cam because of the MVP but he's not going to win.
Name MVP Superbowls Probowls Wins Losses Yards TDS Int
Tom Brady 2 3 9 112 30 40275 297 72
Aaron Rodgers 2 1 6 85 42 34555 282 59
Drew Brees 0 0 8 88 56 44199 320 125
Phillip rivers 0 0 8 73 73 40331 271 135
Russel wilson 0 1 5 77 36 26119 201 63
Matt ryan 1 0 4 70 62 37634 234 105
Ben Roethlisberger 0 0 5 84 45 37243 236 110

I didn't realize how bad the chargers were in the middle of this decade.

Can't stand watching the Titans' offense. So fucking dry.

Edit---
My b, wrong thread.

Brady just tweeted he turned off the game, so somewhat relevant I guess.

Love TB helping out his makeshift OL. That should be good for at least two non-holding calls.

In fairness Wilson is still really good. I don't think he's gonna get those 6 titles he was talking about back in 2014 though. 6 titles is impossible anyway
I agree. It was just the popular opinion at the time that the torch was passing from Brady and Manning to Wilson and Kaepernick. Fast forward several years and two of those four are out of the league. Just not the two everyone was expecting. Thinking about it, since Kaepernick's Super Bowl appearance, the Wilson/Kaepernick combo is a combined 1 for 3 in Super Bowls while the Brady/Manning combo went 4 for 6 in that same time frame. I agree, I think it's still a little early to make the call on Jackson and Mahomes.

There is very, very little doubt that Mahomes is going to be great for a long time. He's only made what, 18 starts, but he looks like as close to a Hall of Famer as you could be after that few games.

Jackson I am much more skeptical on. Let's see him do it for a full season, or longer. And not against Miami and Arizona. Let's not forget that he completed less than 50% of his passes in his lone playoff game.

One thing that I think gets lost on Brady is he has an incredible outlook on life. It's really a shame that the country hates him so much.
I agree with you on TB's "outlook on life", as much as I can gather from his public persona. The level of "hate" seems to be overblown, however. It's mostly sports-hate and once he retires, that bit of ritualistic fan-warriorism will fade among non-Pats fans.

This is the first installment of The McGinn Files, a weekly series looking back at NFL drafts of the last 35 years. The foundation of the series is McGinn’s transcripts from his interviews with NFL general managers, personnel directors and scouts since 1985.
One scout said he threw a great deep ball. Another said he didn't.

What is really interesting about the scouting reports is that for the most part, they seemed to get Brady right in terms of what he can and can't do, how hard he was willing to work and his leadership skills.

It was just that, no one truly valued his strengths or saw what they could do when it all came together.
It also makes you wonder if Brady becomes Brady the GOAT if he ends up on SF or another team that isn't willing to basically redshirt him like the Pats did as the 4th QB on the roster.

I think about this all the time with failed QBs and prospects in other sports.

I believe Bill Parcells had a quote when asked something like, "Aren't you glad you drafted Bledsoe and not Rick Mirer?". " Who's to say it would've worked out the same way if we took the other guy."

First real bad game for Tom this season. They play the dumpster fire Skins next, so things should be easier next week.
